HAT-Banu CUTTER. 1
specification of Letters Patent. Patented Apr, 18,1916,
Application led .T une 29, 1914. Serial No. 847,952.
` hats so that the marginal edge of the brim will be at an equal distance from the crown of the hat throughout its entire length.
The principal points of novelty of the invention reside in the means for adjusting the device whereby it will perfectly engage the crown of the hat so that an evenV cut may be made and in the means for readily effecting' adjustment of the device whereby it may be conveniently used for cutting brims of different widths.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved hat brim cutter. Fig. 2 is a side elevational view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1 with parts broken away.
Referring now more particularly to the drawings, my device comprises a rigid base 4 which is preferably curved and to which a flexible crown engaging member 5 is secured, at its center, to the base member by a rivet 6. A pair of separated lugs 7 are secured to the base member 4 between which are pivoted a pair of levers 8; each lever being mounted upon a pivot pin 9. The ends 10 of the levers are curved relative to their bodies and extend through openings 11 near the ends of the base member 4 and bear against the outer ends of the flexible crown engaging member 5.
The support 12 is secured to the base member 4 and is provided with threads 13 for a portion of its length. A cam 14 is mounted upon the support 12 and has a threaded engagement with the threads 13. The inner ends of the levers 8 bear against the cam 14 so that by moving the cam upon the support 12 the outer ends 10 of the levers 8 are brought to bear against the ends of the flexible member 5 to increase or decrease its curvature. The support 12 is herein shown as having a telescopic engagement with the tube 15 and forms a part of the handle 16.
A knife guide 17 is secured to the tube 15 Supp and is provided with a slot 18 in its side. Within the guide 17 is a brim cutter or knife .19' having a button 20 at its upper end,-and interposed between the top of the guide 17 and the button 20 is a spring 21, whereby the knife is always held in an inoperative position. The upward movement of the knife is limitedr by the pin 22 that is secured to the knife and movable within the slot 18. The under side of the support 12 is provided with a plurality of notches 23. A movable finger 24 and a soft metal plate 25 are secured to the under side of the handle by means of the screws 26. The movable finger 24 has an upturned end 27 extending within the groove 28 formed in the tube 15 and is adapted to engage` one of the notches 23 to hold the ort 12 in an adjusted position relative to the tube 15. The plate 25 extends beneath the point of the knife 19 and protects the table from the knife. The rear end of the tube is provided with an arm 29 that extends beneath the tube and upon which the bearing member 30 is mounted. The purpose of the bearing member 30 is to support the rear end of the handle and thereby prevent it from tipping under pressure which would raise the crown engaging member from its proper position upon the' crown. A pair of ears 31 are formed upon the finger 24 near its outer end so that the finger may be readily depressed to permit of the adjusting of the support 12 relative to the handle.
In use, my improved hat brim cutter operates as follows: rIhe flexible crown enaging member is placed against the crown of the hat 32 at the juncture of the crown and the rim, and the cam is actuated so as to curve the member 5 whereby it will conform to the curvature of the crown, as illustrated in Fig. 1. The handle is then adjusted along the support 12 by depressing the finger 24 and moving the handle until the point of the knife 16 is at the proper distance from the crown, according to the width of the brim that is going to be cut. When the knife is adjusted to the proper position upon the brim 33, the operator pushes down upon the button 20 thereby forcing the point of the knife through the. plate 25 into the brim. The knife may be then held in its lowered position by the foreinger of the operator and the tool is then manually moved around the crown of the hat. So long las the flexible crown engaging member is kept in sliding'contact with the crown, the brim will be cut perfectly true.
Having now described my invention, I claim: r 1
l. A hat brim cutter comprising, in comnear its center, adjustable means for flexing the ends of said crown engaging member, a.
support secured to said base member, a handie' slidably mounted on said support, means :forl adjusting the A handle relative to said support, abrim cutter carried by said handle and spring means for normally holding said brim cutter in an' inoperative position.
l2,. A hat brim cutter comprising, in combination, a curved s rigid base ,member, a
flexible crown engaging member, `secured -to said base v member near its center only, a support secured to said base member, a palr of levers pivotally secured to said base member and having their outer'ends in contact with the ends of's'aid crown engaging member, a cam on said support and in contact with the innerends of said levers, a handle slidably mounted on vsaid support, means for j adjustingsaid handle relative tosaid support and holding the same in adjusted position, a brim cutter carried vby said handle Vand springf means" .for Al'io'lding said brim Y cutter in an inoperative position.
bination, a curved rigid base member, a fleXible crownvengaging member secured thereto`v 3;' A hat brim cutter comprising, in comblnation, a curved rlgid base member, a
Vflexible crown engaging member secured to said'base -membernear its center only, a support secured to said base member, a pair of levers pivotally secured tosaidbase'mem ber and having their outerjends in contact withthe ends ofI saidl crown engagingmem ber, a 'cam on said support and in contact with the inner ends of saidV levers, afhandle s.
slidably mounted on said ysupporta-means'for adjusting said handle relative to said; sup?V port and holding the same in adjusted 'position,y a brim cutter carried by f said handle,
and a roller bearing memberfor saidhandle 1" at its outer ends. ,Y
