Description

2'. G. sums. REMOVABLE MOUNTING-FOR TYPE WRITER CARRIAGES,
APPLICATION FILED JULY 1% l9l5.
' Patented Apr. 18,1916.
wherein- ZALMO'N G. SHOLES, OF WILMINGTON, DELAWARE, r
or WILMINGTO1\T, DELAWARE, A CORPORATION or DELA- TYPEWRITER GDMPANY, WARE.
Application filed July 12,1915. Serial Nd. 39,474.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ZixLiiox G. SHoLEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Vilmington, in the State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Mounting for Type- \V riter Carriages; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it. appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to animprovement in the supporting framework and type bar connections of a typewriter, and the principal object of the invention is the provision of a construction whereby the assembling and taking apart of the machine are facilitated, more particularly withrespect to removal of the carriage and the parts borne by it. I
The invention is illustrated in a preferred form in the accompanying drawings,
Figure 1 is M lan view ofthe frame as assembled, cert: 11 attached parts being shown in section. Fig. 2 IS a sectional view on the line 2-2 01' Fig. 1, the carriage being partly shown in elevation, Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the connections for operating the tabulating or stop bar, and Fig. at is a partial elevation of the connection between the carriage and the spring feeding drum.
The top of the frame is made in the usual manner having the two fiat sides 10 and 11, the front crossing portion 12 and the rear flat portion 13, having a suitable opening 14 to permit passage of the elements which control the carriage.
The platen 15 is carried as usual bya carriage 16, preferably supported on ball bear-' ings 17 and an upright framework 18 which is attached, as by screws 19, to a removable plate 20.
The front edge of the plate 20 is provided with projections 21 which fit into corresponding cavities in the mainframe, as
clearly shown in Fig. 2. Vvhen the machine is assembled, the rear edge of the removable plate 20 is suitably secured to 'the main frame, and I have shown the two studs or catches 22 and 23 for this purpose. These studs are revolubly'mounted in the top of the main frame. The upper stud .22 is shown in Fig; 1' as occupying'the position Specification of Letters Patent.

given it when the parts are assemble'd for use, while the stud 23 isturned s'oas to free the removable plate.
Beneath the carriageis the usual hook 24: which passes through an opening in the usual plate 2'5von the end of the flexible connection 26,- leading to the ,usual spring drum 27. 4
To control the tabulating or stop bar I employ upright rods 28, connected with tilting levers 29 and operated in a well known manner. The upright rods 28 have inclined portions cooperating with the rod 30 fixed to the framework 18 for a well known purpose not concerned with this invention. In
order easily to connect and disconnect the.
bars "28. to and from the levers 29 I prefer to employ the means 'clearly shown in Fig. 3.
Each lever 29 is forked to receive the upper end of the bar 28, and a pin 31 passes through registering openings in the fork and bar,,being held in place by a spring 32. The
' pin 31 also passes through a bracket 33 on the lever 29, and has van enlarged head 34,
bynieans of which the'pin can in temporarily withdrawn by the fingers, when it is desired to disconnect the lever and bar. lVhen the carriage is to be removed for any reason, the levers 28 are disconnected as just described, the plate is removed from the hook 24$. and the catches are turned into the posit-ion shown at 23 in Fig. 1. The rear edge of the removable plate 20 is-then lifted. and the "projections 21 are, with drawn from their sockets. This frees the carriage and its supports, permitting their complete removal from the machine.
The form and arrangementof the various parts can heniodified in various ways with; out departing from my invention,'and do not limit myself to the details herein shown and described.
lVhat I claim is g 1. In a 't-ypewriting machine, a main frame having a fixed top plate formed with a depressed portion on its top surface and having an opening in 'said portion, a removable plate fitting said depressed portion, a carriage support fixed to said removable plate, .a carriage adapted to move along said support over said removable plate, means for controlling said-carriage extending upward through saidopening, and-means for portion thereof, substantially as described.
said. support, and said removable plate adapted to engage the a 2. In a typewriting machine, a main frame having a fixed top plate formed With a depressed portion on its top surface, .a removable plate fitting sa d depressedportion and having an inclined pm near one edge fitting a corresponding socket in said fixed plate, a carriag support fixed upon said removable plate, a movable carriage adapted to bear on said removable plate and guided a clamping means for edge oppositesaid pin,- substantially as described. a v 3. In a typewriting machine, a main frame having a depressed portion in the back part of its. top, a removable plate fitting said depression, a carriage support carried by said plate, a carriage on said support and means for temporarily fixing said plate on said main frame, substantially as described. 7
In testimony whereof I ailiimy signature.
