Be it known that I, JOHN J. G'AYNOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of'Indiana', have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottle-Labeling Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to bottle labeling machines and has for its object to provide an automatic bottle labeling device so constructed and arranged that the bottles are conveyed successively to the labeling mechanism to receive one or more labels, after which the said bottles are delivered from the machine.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bottle labeling machine in which the movements of the primary parts are rotary as distinguished from a reciprocating or oscillatory motion.
A further object of the invention is to provide a bottle labeling machine so constructed and arranged thata minimum number of parts are required, and which is eX- tremely compact, strong, durable and efficient.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the rotating bottle engaging and conveying mechanism.
The invention further consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts which provide for conveying the label or labels. and for applying and aixing the same to the bottles successively.
The invention further consists in certain other novel details of construction and in certain combinations of parts, all of which will be first fully described and afterward specifically pointed out in the appended claims.

machine constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a front end elevation of the same, the conveyer apron or chain being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the machine. Fig. 5 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view taken'on line 5-5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a diagrammatic View illustrating the several positions assumed by one of the label conveying devices upon a full revolution thereof. Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the position of one of the label conveying devices and one of the bottle engaging and label applying fingers inrsection at the time that said bottle engaging and label applying finger is receiving the label from one of the label conveying devices, and also illustrating in dotted lines the position of these parts just prior to the reception of the label from the label carrying device, and in dotted lines the position of these parts just after the bottle holding and label applying finger has received the label from the label carrying device and has applied same to a bottle. Fig. 8 is a vertical sectional view of one of the bottle receiving and carrying devices. Fig. 9 is a perspective View of oneof the label conveying devices, and Fig. 10 is a perspective view of one of the bottle engaging and label applying lingers.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures, in Whichl indicates the bottle labeling machine which comprises a suitable framework 2 having the horizontal longitudinal framepieces 3, 4 and 5. y
Referring to Figs. 2, 3 and 4 `it will be seen that the shaft 6 is journaled in the upper longitudinal frame-piece 3, said shaft carrying a drive pulley 7 which by means of a belt 8 transmits power to the machine. Mounted also on said shaft 6 is a sprocket 9 chained to a sprocket l0 mounted on a shaft 1l journaled in the lower transverse members 5. Mounted also on said shaft 11 is a sprocket l2 for driving the bottle conveyer apron or chain 13. Suitably journaled in close association with the sprocket 12 is a smaller sprocket 14 to which the conveyer apron or chain passes from the drum 15 at the receiving end of the machine, said conveyer apron or chain being provided throughout its length with a succession of inverted V-shaped projections 16 arranged in the manner as shown in the drawings to receive and convey bottles placed on the conveyer apron or chain 13. 17 indicates the large gear which carries the bottle engaging and carrying elements 18 and the bottle engaging and label applying fingers 19, said gear 17 meshing with a smaller gear 17 (Fig. 3) of a ratio of 4 to 1, said smaller gear 17 being mounted on the drive shaft 6 so that upon rotation of said shaft both the gear wheel 17 and the large gear wheel 17 are rotated in opposite directions. Mounted stationary with relation to the said shaft 6 is the double cam 20 and mounted on the Said shaft 6 and rotatable therewith are the two label receiving and conveying devices .21 which are mounted on opposite ends of the arm 22, and which are provided with a plate 23 carrying twosmall rollers 24 and 25, the roller 24 being in line with and acting on the inner cam of the double cam 20, while the roller 25 is in line with and acts on the outer cam of the double cam 20, so that upon rotation of the .label receiving and conveying devices 21 the same are caused to assume the several positions shown diagrammatically in Fig. 6. Mounted on the drive shaft 6 is a sprocket 26 (Fig. 3) which is chained tothe paste gathering roll 27 mounted in a paste box 28 which paste gathering roll 27 is in rolling contact with and drives the paste distributing roll 29. Mounted at the top of the machine are the two label holding boxes: k 30 and 31 which by means of a suitable follower mechanism holds the labels in proper position to be received by the label conveying devices 21.
Referring now particularly to the large rotating gear 17 it will be seen that eight laterally extending spindles or shafts 32 are arranged thereon upon which are mounted the bottle receiving and carrying devices 18, which comprise the concaved bottle receiving fingers or members 33, a bottle stop plate 34 and the plate 35 carryinga roller 36, a coil spring 37 being mounted on each of the spindles or shafts 32 having one end fastened thereto and its other end fastened to the sleeve 38 of the bottle receiving and carrying device 18 in the manner as shown in Fig. 8, said spring acting to hold the bottle receiving and carrying device 18 in its innermost position within the periphery of the large gear 17. Arranged in association with the large gear 17 and in the path of movement of the rollers 36 is a rail 39 which is engaged successively by said rollers to swing the bottle receiving and carrying devices 18 outwardly of the gear 17 for receiving and delivering the bottles from and to the conveyer apron or chain 13 in the manner as shown in Fig. 3.
Referring now to the label conveying devices 21 and particularly to Fig. 9 it will be seen that each one of said devices comprises a lateral bifurcated member 40 forming a pair of lateral fingers or extensions 41, one of which carries a leaf spring 42 for engagement with the bottles to prevent displacement thereof during the instant that the label conveying element 40 deposits the label on the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 in a manner which will be hereinafter fully described.
Referring to the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 and particularly to Fig. 10 it will be seen that the same comprises a lateral post 43 in which is pivoted the finger 44 having an upper extension 45 and a lower extension 46, a leaf spring 47 being provided to impart resiliency to the finger 44, so as to insure a proper and effective contact of' the finger 44 with its bottle.
Referring now to the label boxes 30 and 31 and particularly to Figs. 1 and 3 it will be seen that the same are mounted on an arm 48 pivoted at 49, said arm 48 having a long depending finger 50 which extends downwardly in the path of movement of the bottles in the bottle receiving and conveying elements 18, a Spring 51 being provided for the arm 48 to normally hold the same and the label boxes in an upwardly extended position, the parts being so arranged that the bottles during rotation of the large gear 17 successively engage the finger 50 and release the same which imparts to the label boxes a'slight oscillatory movement as will be apparent from an inspection of the accompanying drawings, this movement being for the purpose of causing the labels in the boxes to be moved down for engagement with the label receiving and conveying members 40, and to prevent the deposit of a label when no bottle is in a bottle receiving and conveying member 18. The bottles being placed on the receiving end of the bottle conveyer apron or chain 13 the same are carried thereby to the rotating bottle carrying devices 18, a guide spring 52 being provided for the purpose of guiding the bottles and assuring their proper position in the `bottle carrying devices 18.
As will appear from Fig. 3 the bottle carrying device 18 which is in position to receive a bottle from the conveyer apron or chain 13 -is swung into this receptive position by means of its roller 36 acting on the rail 39. When a bottle has been deposited in the bottle carrying device 18 the same is carried upwardly to the label conveying devices 21. As will appear from Fig. 1 a
considerable space is maintained between the bottle in its carrying device 18 and its bottle engaging and label applying finger 19, so lon as the roller 36 is acting on the rail 39. s the said bottle carrying device 18 approaches the upper end of the rail 39 the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 is straddled by one of the label carrying members 40 which it will be understood is rotating at a ratio of 4 to 1 with respect to the large gear 17 and the bottle carrying devices thereon, which straddling of the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 by the bifurcated label carrying device 40 deposits on said bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 the label or labels in a manner which will now be described.
Referring now to Fig. 6 which illustrates diagrammatically the several positions that each label conveying device 21 assumes at each full revolution thereof, it will be seen that the double cam 20 so positions the label carrying device 21 that it has a rolling contact with the paste distributing roll 29, thus taking therefrom a sufficient quantity of paste to insure the proper effective adhesion of the labels to the bottles. As each of the label carrying Ydevices 21 progresses in its revolution, the same is swung by means of the double cam 20 into proper position for a rolling contact on the labels in the label boxes 30 and 31 so that the outermost label in each box adheres to the surface or face of the bifurcated label conveying element 40. Whenthis has been accomplished the label carrying device 21 continues its rotation and as it approaches the bottle carrying devices 18 on the large gear 17 it is swung by the double cam 2O so that the label carrying member 40 passes between the bottle in the bottle carrying ,device 18 and the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19, and as said label carryingvmember 40 is progressing at a greater speed than the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 said bifurcated label carrying member 40 straddles the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 and passes ahead and beyond said finger, thus depositing thereon the labels in the manner as shown diagrammatically in Fig. 7. At the instant that the labels are deposited on the bottle engaging and label applying finger 19 the bottle carrying device 18 reaches the upper end of the rail 39, thus causing the spiral spring 37 (Fi 8) to swing the bottle carrying'device an its bottle inwardly of the large gear 17 and causing the bottle to be brought into contact with the bottle engaging and label a plying finger 19, which have 'ust received tiie label or labels from the bi urcated label carrying member 40, thus simultaneously applying the labels to the bottle. As the bottle progresses in its revolution it passes through the label wiping devices 52l which as will a pear from Figs. 1 and 3 are arranged stationary with relation to the rotating bottle carrying devices 18 each of said label wiping devices comprising suitable fiexible wipers 53 which engage and wipe the label as the bottle is passed between the same. As the bottle progresses in its revolution the roller 36 on the bottle carrying device 18 engages the rail 39 causing the bottle carrying device to swing outwardly and carrying the bottle out of engagement with the bottle engaging and label applyin finger 19 to deposit the bottle upon the de ivery end of the conveyer apron or chain 13.
Having thus fully described the invention it is of course apparent that the same is susceptible to certain changes and alterations in the construction and arrangementvof the parts, and I consider myself clearly entitled to all such changes and modifications as fall within the limit and scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is- 1. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a plurality of bottle carriers pivotally mounted thereon, a conveyer having extensions thereon to form spaces or recesses to v receive bottles to convey the sameV to and from said bottle'carriers, label receiving and conveying devices associated with said vertical rotatable member and with said bottle carriers, means associated with said carriers to swing the saine on their pivots to receive bottles from and deliver bottles to said conveyer, means for applying paste to said label receiving and carrying devices, a plurality of label boxes associated with said label receivin and conveying devices to deposit a plurality of labels thereon and to convey the same to said bottle carriers to be applied thereby to the bottles, and means for wiping the labels so applied.
2. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a plurality of bottle carriers mounted thereon, a conveyer having extensions thereon to form spaces or recesses to receive bottles to convey the same to and from said bottle carriers, means associated with said carriers to move the same on said rotatable member to receive bottles from and deliver bottles to said conveyer, label receiving and conveying devices associated with said vertical rotatable member and with said bottle holding and receiving devices, means for applyin' paste to said label receiving and carrying evices, a plurality of label boxes associated with said label receiving and conve ing ydevices to deposit a plurality of labels t ereon, andgto convey the same to said bottle carriers 'to be applied thereb to the bottles. f
3. A bottle abeling machine,l Aelud ,a vertically disposed rotatable abnrality of bottle carriers movably rr'iioiinted thereon, a conveyer having extensions there- 0n to form spaces or recesses to receive bottles to convey the same to and from said bottle carriers, means associated with said carriers to move same 4on said rotatable member to receive bottles from and deliver bottles to said conveyer, label receiving and conveying devices associated with said vertical rotatable member and with said bottle holding and receiving devices, means for applying paste to said label receiving and carrying devices, a label box associated with said label receiving and conveying devices to deposit a label thereon to be conveyed to said bottle carriers to be applied thereby to the bottles, and means for wiping the labels so applied.
4. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a plurality ofY bottle carriers movably mounted thereon, a conveyer to receive bottles to convey the same to and from said bottle carriers, means associated with said carriers to move the same on said rotatable member to receive bottles from said conveyer, label receiving and conveying devices associated with said vertical rotatable member and with said bottle carriers, means for applying paste to said label receiving and carrying devices, a label box associated with said label receiving and conveying devices to deposit a label thereon and to convey the same to said bottle carriers to be applied thereby to the bottles.
5. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotating member, a series of bottle holding and engaging devices thereon, a conveyer for conveying bottles to and from said bottle holding and engaging devices, a cam actuated label receiving and conveying device, means for applying paste thereon, means for depositing a label thereon to be conveyed thereby to one of said bottle holding and engaging devices to deposit the label thereon to be applied thereby to a bottle, and means for wiping the label so ap lied.
6. E bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotating member, a series of bottle holdin and engaging devices thereon, a conveyer or conveying bottles to and from said bottle holding and engaging devices, a cam actuated label receiving and conveying device, means for applying paste thereon, means for depositing a label thereon ,to be conveyed thereby to one of said bottle holdin and engaging devices to deposit the labe thereon to be applied thereby to a bottle.
7. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a series of bottle holding and engaging devices pivoted thereon and rotatable therewith, each of said devices having a bottle engaging and label applying finger arranged stationary with relation to the said rotatable member, means associated with said rotatable member and arranged in the path of movement of said bottle holding and engaging devices to swing the bottle holding and engaging devices outwardly of the said vertically disposed rotatable member, means for conveying bottles to and from said bottle holding and engaging devices, a cam operated pivoted label receiving and conveying device, including a bifui'cated label receiving and conveying member, .means for applying paste to said bifurcated label receiving and applying member,- means for depositing a label thereon to be conveyed thereby to one of said bottle engaging and label applying fingers to meet and straddle the same and deposit thereon a label to be applied thereby to a bottle, and means for wiping the label so applied.
8. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a series of bottle holding and engaging devices pivoted thereon and rotatable therewith, each of said devices having@ a bottle engaging and label applying finger arranged stationary with relation to the said rotatable member, means associated with said rotatable member and arranged in the path of movement of said bottle holding and engaging devices to swing the bottle holding and engagin devices outwardly of the said vertically disposed rotatable member, means for conveying bottles to and from said bottle holding and engaging devices, a cam operated pivoted label receiving and conveying device including a bifurcated label receiving and conveying member, means for applying paste to said bifurcated label receiving and applying member, means for depositing a label thereon to be conveyed thereby, to one of said bottle engaging and label applying fingers to meet and straddle the same and deposit thereon a label to be applied thereby to a bottle.
9. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a series of bottle holding and engaging devices pivoted thereon and rotatable therewith, each of said devices having a bottle engaging and label applying finger arranged stationary with relation to the said rotatable member, means associated with said rotatable member and arranged in the path of movement of said bottle holding and engaging devices to swing the bottle holding and engaging devices outwardly of the said vertically disposed rotatable member, means for conveying bottles to and from said bottle holding and engaging devices, a label receiving and conveyin device including a bifurcated label receiving and conveying member, means for applying paste to said bifurcated label receiving and applying member, means for depositing a label thereon to be conveyed thereby to one of said bottled applying fingers to meet and straddle the same and deposit thereon a label to be applied thereby to a bottle, and means for wiping the label so applied.
10. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a series of bottle holding and engaging devices pivoted thereon and rotatable therewith. each of' said devices having a bottle engaging and label applying finger arranged stationary with relation to the said rotatable member, means associated with said rotatable member and arranged in the path of movement of' said bottle holding and engaging devices to swing the bottle holding and engaging devices outwardly of the said vertically disposed rotatable member, means for conveying bottles to and from said bottle holding and engaging devices, a label receiving and conveying device including a bifurcated label receiving and conveying member, means for applying paste to said bifurcated label receiving and applying member, means for depositing a label thereon to be conveyed thereby to one of said bottle engaging and label applying fingers to meet and straddle the same and deposit thereon a label to be applied thereby to a bottle.
11. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a bottle holding and engaging device arranged thereon and rotatable therewith, said bottle holding and engaging device including a bottle engaging and label applying finger mounted on and rotatable with said Vertical rotatable member, a conveyer for conveying a bottle to said bottle holding and engaging device, means for swinging said bottle holding and engaging device outwardly of the said vertical rotatable member and for holding a bottle out of engagement with its said bottle engaging and label applying finger, a camactuated pivoted label receiving and conveying device including a bifurcated label receiving and conveying member, means for applying pastel and means for applying a label to said bifurcated label receiving and conveying member to be conveyed thereby to the said bottle engaging and label applying finger to straddle the same and deposit thereon a label, said bottle holding and engaging device including means for swinging the same and its bottle inwardly of the said vertical rotatable member and into engagement with its said bottle engaging and label applying linger to receive a label therefrom and means for wiping the label so received.
12. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertically disposed rotatable member, a bottle holding and engaging device arranged thereon and rotatable therewith, said bottle holding and engaging device including a bottle engaging and label applying finger mounted on and rotatable with said vertical rotatable member, a conveyer for conveying a bottle to said bottle holding and engaging device, means for swinging said bottle holding and engaging device outwardly of' the said vertical rotatable member and for holding a bottle out of engagement with its said bottle engaging and label applying finger, a cam actuated pivoted label receiving and conveying device including a bifurcated label receiving and conveying member, means for applying paste and means for applying a label to said bifurcated label receiving and conveying member to be conveyed thereby to the said bottle engaging and label applying finger to straddle the same and deposit thereon a label, said bottle holding and engaging device including means for swinging the same and its bottle inwardly of the said vertical rotatable member and into engagement with its said bottle engaging and label applying finger to receive a label therefrom.
13. A bottle labeling machine, including a vertical rotatable member, a bottle holding and engaging device thereon and rotatable therewith and including means for receiving and afiixing a label to a. bottle, a label receiving and conveying device, means for applying paste thereto, means for applying a label thereto to be conveyed thereby to said bottle holding and engaging device to deposit a label thereon, and means for effecting contact between a bottle in the said bottle holding and engaging device with the said means for applying a label thereto, and means for wiping the label so applied.

A bottle labeling machine, including a vertical rotatable member, a bottle holding and engaging device thereon and rotatable therewith and including means for receiving and affixing a label to a bottle, a label receiving and conveying device, means for applying paste thereto, means for applying a label thereto to be conveyed thereby to said bottle holding and engaging device to deposit a label thereon and means for effecting contact between a bottle in the said bottle holding and engaging device with the said means for applying a label thereto.
15. A bottle labeling machine, including means for receiving and engaging a bottle, a label receiving and conveying device associated therewith, a label holding device for depositing a label on said label receiving and conveying device, said label holding device including means to be engaged by a bottle to move said label holding device into operative' position for depositing a label on said label receiving and conveying device to be conveyed thereby.
16. A bottle labeling machine, including means for receiving and engaging a bottle, a label receiving and convevinn Having umciated therewith, a label holding device for depositing a label on said label receiving and conveying device, said label holding device being` normally out of position for depositing a label on said label receiving and conveying device, and including means actuated by a bottle in said bottle receiving and engaging' means for moving said label holding device into operative position to deposit a label on said label receiving and conveying 10 device.
