To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RALPH WYMORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thayer, in the county of Neosho and State of Kansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Wireless Check-Row Planters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved wireless check row planter in which the operation of the actuating mechanism of the planter is directly under the control of the attendant and is adapted to be adjusted by the attendant when the machine is turned at the end of a row so as to cause the hills to be planted in check rows and without the necessity of employing an operating wire stretched across the field.
The invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:Figure l is a plan of wireless check row mechanism constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the plane indicated by the line a-a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line bb of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view on the plane indicated by the line cl(Z of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a similar view on the plane indicated by the line ee of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a detail sectional view through the drill rod, the check row rod, and the front bar of the machine frame and showing the mutilated gear on the drill rod and the segment gear on the check row rod.
For the purposes of this specification a portion of the frame is indicated at 1, the drill rod is indicated at 2, the check row rod or marker rod is indicated at 3 and the axle shaft is indicated at 4. The usual sprocket wheel 4* is secured on the axle shaft and is connected by an endless sprocket chain 4 with a sprocket Wheel 2 on the drill rod. The usual chain tightener is indicated at 28. A sprocket wheel 5 is secured on the axle shaft as by means of a set screw 6 in a threaded opening in a hub extension 7 of the sprocket wheel. A cross bar is indicated at 8, a standard 9 which is provided at its upper end with a longitudinally arranged and inclined tubular bearing 10, is bolted to the frame as at 9*. A sprocketwheel 15, which I will term a master wheel, is loosely mounted on the drill rod for rotation and is connected to the sprocket wheel 5 by an endless sprocket chain 16. On one side of the master wheel is a pawl 17 which is pivotally mounted as at 18 and has an'upwardly extending arm 19 and this pawl is provided 011 its inner side with a stop opening 20. The master wheel also has on the same side as the pawl a fixed stop 21. A spring 22 is provided which normally holds the pawl in engaged position and with its arm 19 engaged by the stop 21. To hold the pawl in disengaged position, so as to put the machine out of gear, I also provide the master wheel with a set screw 23 which passes through a threaded opening in said master wheel and when the pawl has been turned to disengaged position the said set screw may be engaged with the opening 20 of the pawl to hold the latter in said disengaged position, against the tension of the spring 22. A beveled gear 24 is also mounted for rotation on the drill rod and may be engaged and disengaged by the adjusting gear 12, the latter being normally held in disengaged position by the action of the spring 14. To adjust the checking row planting mechanism after the machine has been turned at the end of a row, the operator first ranges the machine so that its marker alines with the marks of the previously planted rows and he then by gripping and manipulating the hand wheel causes the gear 12 to be engaged with the gear 24 and the latter to be turned a sufficient distance to cause the segment gear 26 to engage the wheel thereby being able to put the machine out of gear and it is so held until the machine has been turned and its check row-mechanism adjusted as before stated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim 1. In wireless check row planting mechanism in combination with a rock shaft having a segment gear, a gear mounted on a drill rod and having a mutilated gear to engage the first named segment gear and also having a ratchet wheel, a master gear also mounted on the drill rod a pawl carried by the master gear and arranged for engagement with and disengagement from the ratchet wheel, and a manually operated shaft having an adjusting gear for engagement with and disengagement from the drill rod gear.
2. In wireless check row planting mechanism in combination with a check row shaft having a segment gear, a gear mounted on a drill rod and having a mutilated gear to engage the first named segment gear and also having a ratchet wheel, a master gear also mounted on the drillrod a pawl carried by the master gear and arranged for engagement with and disengagement from the ratchet wheel, a spring to engage the pawl with the ratchet wheel, means to hold the pawl in disengaged position, and a manually operated shaft having an adjusting gear for engagement with and disengagement from the first named gear.
