l When itis desired'tonpplythe Aresen 1n yv'ention to a machine VAofftli *usua const le tion, the usual frame 24 isdivided and rating`members'- 26 insertedfbetiveenth endv 27 'to 'giife thel irame24 greater lengthjth n the fralfnes lon machines of "this'e'hern te now in' general use. This lengthening' of the frame 24 makes it possible to construct the shaft 19 of greater length than the longestblock to be mounted on the work holding members 12x and to rotate said shaft 19 directly by means of a pulley 28 secured to the end thereof opposite to that on which the cutter head 18 is secured.
Thepnlley 28 is driven by a belt 29 from the usual revoluble drum 30 -found on all machines of this character. 1` he shaft 19 is inclined relatively to the front of the 1nachine with the pulley 28 further to the rear than the cutter head 38, thereby providing sutlicient space to permit the rotation of the Werk without the latter conflicting with said shaft during the .last turning operation.
The end of the shaft opposite the puiley 28 is provided with an enlarged coneshaped end 31, the'outer face of which has a radial recess 32 therein." In the bearing 21 is mounted a revoluble member 33 having an enlarged end 34 abutting the inner face of the bearing 21. The inner face of this enlarged end 34 is provided with a radial recess 35. Interposed' between the opposed faces of the member 31 and the flanged head 34 is an intermediate member 36 having ,radial recesses 37 and 38 in opposite faces thereof, these recesses being perpendicular to each other. The recesses 32, 37, 38 and 35 are disposed at right angles to each other and prevented from movement relative to y each other by means of a pin 39 disposed in the intermediate member 36 with its ends projecting into the cone-shaped end of the haft 19 andthe flanged head 34 as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3-of the drawings.
Disposed in therecess 32 is a cutting knife 4() and similarly disposed' in the recess 37 is a cutting knife 41. Inthe recess 38 is positioned the cutting knife 42, while in the recess 35 is positioned the finishing cutter 43. It is apparent from an inspection of Fig. 3 of the drawings that these cutting knives A10, 4l, 42 and are all in different vertical planes.l
. By an inspection of Fig. 4 of the drawings it will be noted that the cutting edge of the knife 41 is farther removed from the aXis of the'shaft lflthan the cutting edge of the knife 4() and the. cutting edge of the knife 42 is farther removed from said axis than the cutting edge ofthe' knife 4l, while the cutting edge of the finishing knife 43 extends lstill farther outwardly.
in the .direction of the arrow a. on l? ig. 4 of the drawings the cutting knives 40, 4l, 42, and 43 will successively act upon the work in different planesgtb material in any one portion of the work being removed in 'four sections, a portion of the material first be ing cut away by the knife 40 and then other By means of this. .construction as the cutting head 18 rotates portions being successively cutl away by the Vknives 41, 42, and 43.
The knife 43 is the finishing knife and has `a greater amount of cutting edge as indicated at 44 in Figs. 2, 3, and 4 of the drawings. Each of the knives 40, 41, and 42 is provided at its inner end with a cylindrical hole through which extends a clamping bolt 45 threaded to the cone-shaped end of the shaft 19 as indicated at 46. By meansof this bolt 45, the flanged head 34, the intermediate member 36, and the enlarged cone-shaped end of the shaft 19 are drawn together and the knives positioned in the various recesses of these members are securely clamped in position. As the openings in the knives 40, 41, and 42 are Cylindrical and fit the bolt 45, it is obvious that there cannot be any end movement of these knives while on account of the clamping of the knives by means'of the bolt 45 there can be no lateral movement of these knives and all chattering is preventedt The opening in the inner end of the .inishing knife 43' is elongated as shown 47 in Fig. 4 of the drawings and threaded to the rear end of the knife 43 is a screw 48 having a head 49 extending into a. groove 50. in the inner face of the flanged head 34, thereby preventing end movement of said screw as it is turned about its axis.
lt is obvious that'by turning the screw the knife 43 may be adjusted cndwise in either direction. The larger end'44 of the finishing knife 43 overbalances the smaller ends of the other cutting knives and to obviate this diiiculty a ring 51 is secured to the pcriphery of the flanged member 34 by means of a` screw 52 or similar securing member.` T his' ring 51 is eccentric as shown in Fig. 4 with the greater thickness disposed opposite to the end 44 of the finishing knife 43. The ring 51 also varies in width as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, thisyariation in width being for the purpose olf equally balancing the weight of the knives extending beyond the periphery of the eiitter head 'i8 so that in the rotation ofthe shaft 1.) the entire cut ter head will be perfectly balanced. The shaft 19 at omil ond is provided with the annular groove o3 into which extends a plate 54 secured to lthe yend of the bearing 20 asindicated in Figs. 2 and 5 ofthe drawings.
The ring 51 is provided with an opening therein opposite the screw 48 through which a screw driver may be inserted to turn the screw 48 and adjust the knife 43 as desired. By means of this construction a cutter head of greatly reduced diameter may be used and thereby turn lasts with thin combs, the hollowingout on opposite sides of the com-b being entirely accomplished by. means of a machine and dispensing with hand labor.
