A life saving appliance comprising a waistcoat provided .with buoyant compart ments at its back and at the two sides of its front, the compartments at the back being separated by a tapering portion extending to the bottom of the garment and being widest at its bottom end and provided with an adjusting device for contracting it, the bottoms of the back compartments being arranged above the'waist line of the garment and above the bottoms of the front compartments to assure the greater buoyancy of the front of the garment.

A life saving appliance comprising a a waistcoat provided with three groups of buoyant compartments one group disposed at each side of the front and another group disposed. at the back, said back group being divided into two by a tapering portion having its wider end at vthe bottom an adjusting strap being disposeda'cross said tapering portion, the front groups each comprising compartments which extend vertically from the waist line almost to the shoulder,
