' mrnmmn-comnosrrounucmn To all whom may concern 'Be it known that I, JAMES GUTHRIE, a citizen of the United States, residing'at Jackson, county of Jackson, Stateof Michi-' internal combustion engine in which the crank shaft is supported from the cylinder block independently of the crank case. Third, to provide in an improved internal combustion engine an improved crank case formed of sheet metal. Fourth, to provide an improved internal combustion engine which is simple and economical in its parts and one in which the parts are comparatively light in weight and at the same time strong and durable.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification.
The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawing similar reference charactens refer to similar parts throughout the several vlews, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawings, the body of the cyllnder or cylinder block 1 is formed as a cast ng with cylinders 2 therein and a surroundlng water jacket 3. At one side the cyllnder block has inlet passages 4 to which the manifold connects. The cylinder head 6is secured by means of the bolts 7. The cylinder block also has a valve housing chamber 8 below the passages 4, the chamberbeing open at the side of thecylinder block and provlded with a closure plate 9. This closure'plate is a sheet metal stamping retamed by the screw bolts 10. The cylinder block is provided with outwardly projecting flanges 13. Between its cylinders the cylinder block is provided with cross members 11. These cross members are disposed above the bearings of the crank shaft 12. The crank shaft is supported from the cylinder block by hangers 14 disposed below the cross members 11 and secured by the bolts 15 (see Figs. I, II and III). e
The crank shaft casing, which is formed of sheet metal, consists of side walls 16 having out-turned flanges 17 at their ends and.

The upper section 21 is. provided with an offset 25 to receive the upper edge of the lower section 22 and with a joint piece 26 lapping the upper edge of the By formeasily formed and assembled. The end walls are arranged against the out-turned flanges at the ends of the side walls and secured thereto by bolts 27. The upper flanges of the side-and rear end walls are secured to the flanges 13 of the cylinder block by bolts 2 The oil sump pan or reservoir 29 has cutwhich surplus oil passes from the crank so that as the crank shaft revolves its armsstrike through these pockets to splash the oil on the bearing parts. The bottom plate 31 is provided with an opening 35 through case into the oil sump. This opening 35 is provided with a screen 36. At the front end of the crank case is an opening 37 having an upwardly projecting flange 38 at its edges. This opening is also provided with a screen 39. The oil sump is provided with a cock 40 and with a pump connection 11 which delivers at 42. The pump is not shown as the details form no part" of my present invention.
The front wall 19 is extended up to provide a rear wall for the fan gearing casing 43. This gearing casing is described in my co-pending application, Ser. No. 38769, filed July 8, 1915, and I do not therefore describe the same in detail herein.
With the parts thus formed and arranged or block 1 requires but little machine work as it is only necessary to plane off the bottom to receive the crank shaft-hangers and the crank shaft casing. The cylinder block is planed off at the top to-receive the cylinder head. The left-hand side of the cylinder block is planed off to receive the manifold and the closure plate 9. The opposite side of the cylinder block is planed oil" at 44 toreceive the pipe 45. The crank shaft hangeris mounted so that the load is carried by the cylinder block and the crank shaft casing carries none of the load or strain thereof.
I have illustrated and described my improvements in a simple embodiment. I have not attempted to illustrate or describe various modifications in structural details which I contemplate as I believe the disclosure made will enable those skilled in the art to which my invention relates to embody or adapt the same as conditions may require.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A structure of the class described comprising a cylinder member having outwardly projecting flanges at its rear end and sides, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, a crank shaft casing comprising sheet metal side walls having out-turned flanges at their edges, theflanges at the upper edges of said side walls being disposed below and secured to the side flanges of said cylinder member, a sheet metal rear end wall comprising top andbottom sections, the top section being outwardly offset to'receive the upper edge of the lower section and provided with a joint member overlapping the lower section, the joint between said sections being in the plane of the crank shaft, the side edges of said sections being lapped upon and secured to the rear end flanges of said side walls, the top section having an out-turned flange at its upper edges disposed below and secured to the end flange of said cylinder member, the bottom section being provided with an out-turned flange at its lower edge, a sheet metal front wall lapped upon and secured to the flanges at the front ends ofsaid side walls, said front wall-being provided with an out-turned flange at its lower end, a sheet metal oil sump pan having out-turned flanges at its edges disposed below the bottom flanges of. said side and end walls and secured thereto, and a sheet metal crank case bottom having oil pockets therein disposed with its edges between the bottom flanges of said side and end walls and the flanges of said sump pan.
2. A structure of the class vdescribed comprising a cylinder member having outwardly projecting flanges at its rear end and sides, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, a crank shaft casing comprising sheet metal side walls having out-turned flanges at their edges, the flanges at the upper edges of said side walls being disposed below and secured to the side flanges of said cylinder member, a sheet metal rear end wall having flanges at its upper and lower edges, the top flange metal front wall lapped upon and secured to the flanges at the front ends of said side walls, said front wall being provided with an out-turned flange at its lower end, a sheet metal oil sump pan having out-turned flanges at its edges disposed below the bottom flange of said side and end walls and secured thereto, and a sheet metal crank case bottom having oil pockets therein disposed with its edges between the bottom flanges of said side and end walls and the flanges of said sump pan.
3. A structure of the class described comprising a cylinder member having outwardly projecting flanges at its rear end and sides, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, a' crank shaft casing comprising sheet metal side walls having out-turned flanges at their edges, the flanges at the upper edges of said side walls being-disposed below and secured to the side flanges of said cylinder member, a sheet metal rear end wall comprising top and bottom sections, the top section being outwardly offset to receive the upper edge of the lower section and provided with a joint member overlapping the lower section. the joint between said sections being in the plane of the crank shaft, the side edges of said sections being lapped upon and secured to the rear end flanges of said side walls, the top section having an out-turned flange at its upper edges disposed below and secured to the end flange of said cylinder member, the bottom section being provided with an out-turned flange at its lower edge. a sheet metal front wall lapped upon and secured to the flanges at the front ends-of said side walls, said front wall being provided with an out-turned flange at its lower end, and a sheet metal bottom member disposed below the bottom flanges of said side and end walls and secured thereto.
4. A structure of the class described, comprising a cylinder member having outwardly projecting flanges at its rear end and sides, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, a crank shaft casing comprising sheet metal side walls having out-turned flanges at their edges, the flanges at the upper edges of said side walls being disposed below and secured to the side flanges of said cylinder member, a sheet metal rear end wall having flanges at its upper and lower edges, the top flange being disposed below and secured to the said flange of said cylinder member, its side edges being lapped upon and secured to the rear end flanges of the side walls a sheet metal front wall lapped upon and secured to the flanges at the front ends of said side walls, said front wall being provided with an out-turned flange at its lower end, and a sheet metal bottom member disposed below the bottom flanges of said side and end walls and secured thereto.
5. A structure of the class described comprising a cylinder member, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, a. crank shaft casing comprising sheet metal side and end walls secured to said cylinder member and having outturned flanges at their lower edges, a sheet metal oil sump pan having out-turned flanges at its edges disposed below the bottom flanges of said side and end walls and secured thereto, and a sheet metal crank case bottom having oil pockets therein disposed with its edges between the bottom flanges of said side and end walls and the flanges of said sump pan. 7

A structure of the class described comprising a cylinder member, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, a crank shaft casing comprising sheet metal side and end walls secured to said cylinder member and having outturned flanges at their lower edges, and a sheet metal bottom member disposed below the bottom flanges of said side and end wall and secured thereto.
7. A structure of the class described comprising a cylinder member having spaced cross portions at its lower end, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cross portions of said cylinder member, and a sheet metal crank shaft casing secured to said cylinder member. I
8. A structure of the class described comprising a cylinder member, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, and a sheet metal crank shaft casing secured to said cylinder member.
9. A structure of the class described comprising a cylinder member flat faced on its bottom and top, a cylinder head member secured to the top of said cylinder member, a crank shaft, hangers therefor mounted on said cylinder member, and a crank-shaft casing secured to said cylinder.
