Specification of fitters Patent.

To-all whom/it may concern:
Be it "known that I, HEINRICH MT'JLLER, a subject of the German'Emperor, anduresiding at Nuremberg, State of Bavaria, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Walking Figure Toys, of which the following is. a specification.
This invention relates to upright. walking toyfigures, the walking movement'of which is effected by means of rods guiding the feet of the figure parallel to themselves. In devices of this kind now in use "there is provided on the feet a stopping'device which prevents the feet fromsmoving. backward after they are moved forward. But, in these devices the movement "takes place in one direction only, that is the forward di rection.
The object of my invention is to provide a toy figure which performs divers motions.
A further object of my invention is to arrange the guiding rods in such a manner that the one rod is inclosed by the other rod and therefore is invisible, whereby results a pretty appearance of the figure.
I will now describe my invention in con nection with the accompanying drawing, in
which- I Figure 1 represents in side elevation the lower part of a toy figure embodying the invention in its preferred form, the one leg of the figure being shown in vertical section, Fig. 2 a front view in connection with a longitudinal section of the one leg at right angle to the section in Fig. 1, Fig. 3 a horizontal section through a foot of the toy figure.
In the casing 1 the driving mechanism is provided, comprising the spring 2 and the toothed wheels 3, L, 5, 6, 7, 8. On the axle 9 of the toothed wheel 8 are provided wings 10, the purpose of which is to regulate the spring mechanism. At the ends of the axle low and pivotally mounted on the axle 14.
In the upper part of the legs are provided apertures 15, with which the eccentric disks are engaged, so that, when the disks revolve, the legs are moved forward and backward. With the casing 1 also are connected by the axle 16 rods 17, which pass through a slot 18 into the hollow legs and extend down to the lower part thereof, which has the form of a foot 19. In the interior of form .guide bars, whereby thesupports 20 arerguided Ipa-rallelv 'to'i themselves, when the legs are: moved alternately. Mounted in the support :20 is an axle 23 which :passes through apertures arranged in the walls 'of the support. 25-, and; in. "order that said axle may 'be rotated a crank 24 is provided on the outer end thereof.- The bar-"25 is connected to the plate 27 by the pivot 26, the plate 27 being The axle 23 supports a 'bar provided at bo'th"end's' with teeth which -'fo'rm stopping members,- by means of which the support is prevented from backward movement, since when the support is moved forward, and reverse action is exerted on the support, the teeth of one end of the plate 27 engage the surface on which the device, is placed, with the result that reverse movement of the support is prevented.
The bars 25 are provided with projections 29 and may be swung by means of the lever 24 so that the one or the other projection rests against the axle 22. Thus the lower end of the stopping members 27 either is directed backward as it is shown in the drawing, or is directed forward. On the free end of the pivot 26 is fastened the weight 31 which effects that the stopping members rest in their respective position. The stopping members may be also placed in horizontal position so that they are out of contact with the ground.
According to the various positions of the stopping members various motions of the toy figure are performed. lVhen the stopping members of both supports 20 are in the position 27 the toy figure moves forward. When both stopping members are in the position 27' the toy figure moves backward. WVhen the one of the stopping memhers is directed with its lower end forward and the other stopping member is directed backward, the toy figure turns'in place or dances, respectively around to the right or to the left. When the onestopping member is in horizontal position and thus out of contact with the ground, but the other member rests against the ground, the top figure moves along a circle respectively to the right or to the left as forward or backward. When both stopping members are out of contact with the ground, the legs move alternately forward and backward while the figure itself is in rest. 4 V r What I claim is: 1. A device of the kind described comprising abody, hollow legportions pivoted to the body terminating in hollow foot portions, means adjacent one end of the respective leg portions for producing a reciprocating movement thereof, a support in each foot portion, each support carrying rollers, and adjustable means between the rollers for engaging the surfaces on which the device is placed, for preventing movement of the leg portions in more than one direction.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a body, hollow leg portions terminating in hollow foot portions pivoted to the body, a supportin each foot portion, each support comprising a frame, rollers for supporting the frame, an axle connecting the sides of the frame, a plate supported by the axle, said plate adapted to engage Copies of this patent may be obtained for leg portions, said plate adapted to prevent movement of the leg portions in more than one direction, and means for moving the teeth of either end of the plate into engagement with the surface on which the device is placed.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
