AGITATING' DEVICE FOR DIPPING-TANKS.
Specification Of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 11, 191.6.
Application filed October 4, 1915. Serial No. 53,894.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that CHARLES TJ'CARLSON, arcitizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Stark and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Agitating Device for Dipping-Tanks, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to agitating devices and has more especial reference to an agitating device adapted to be located within the usual dipping tank which is employed in the manufacture of enamel ware, and contains the enamel in a liquidV form, into whichl the articles to be coated are dipped. The form of dipping tanks at present in use for this purpose is not provided with any agitating Vmeans and since the enamel used contains a great quantity of powdered material such as silica and metallic oxids, there isa tendency' for these powdered materials to settle to the bottom of the tank, leaving the mixture iny the upper part of the tank too thin and it isk necessary to frequently stir or agitate the mixture by hand in orderto procure a uniform coating of enamel upon all of the articles dipped therein.
The Object of the present invention is to provide a dipping tank with an agitating deviceby means of which the enamel contained in the tank is continuously agitated, a uniform consistency being maintained throughout the tank.
I A further object is the provision of a dipping'tank with a continuous agtating ldevice which will not interfere with the operation of the dipping.
A still further Object is the provision of a dipping tank provided with a continuous agitating device therein and ascreen arranged within said tank to prevent the articles being dipped fromcoming into contact with said agitating device.
With these objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter described, illustrated in the `accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understoodthat various changes in the form, proportions, size andminor details of construction may be made within the scope Of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit` or sacricing any of the advantages of the Y invention.
In the accompanying drawings:` Figure 1V is a vertical section through a dipping tank provided with an agitating device. Fig. 2
1s a detail perspective view of the agitating device. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view of a portion of the tank.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
0 Referring more especially to the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, the numeral 1 indicates the dipping tank which is preferably formed of sheet metal, cylindrical in shape, the upper edge of the side wall of said tank being provided with a bead 2 upon which rests the outwardly disposed flange 3 of the annular member 4, said annularmember being'prosoy located inthe 'bottom of the dipping tank, Y
said shaft being provided with a pulley 13 by means of which power is applied to the shaft.
The agitating dasher is mounted upon the upper extremity of the lshaft 11 and comprises the disk. 14 around the periphery of which is provided the up-turned annular flange 15. A ring 16, of substantially the@ same diameter as the flange 15, is spaced above said disk concentric thereto, andl connected byfmeans of the diagonally disposed strips 17 with said flange 15, saidstrips be- L ing connected to the ring and flange by spot welding, soldering, or other `suitable means. Each of the lstrips 17 is provided with an out-turned flange or blade 18, preferably disposedat right angles to the strip. The diskV 14 is provided with a series of radial slits having relatively short slits disposed at right angles to each endthereofand the metal between these shorter slits is bent as shown in Fig. 2, forming down-turned scraper blades V19, arranged to scrape the bottom wall of the tank, agitating any of the heavier portion of the enamel whichl may settle thereon, and theup`-turned scraper blades 2O arranged to scrape the under-side of the screen, which will be hereinafter described, dislodging any the agitator.
A series of diagonally located ribs 22a are formed upon the inner face of the vertical wall of the tank, said ribs being diagonally disposed in a direction opposite to that of the blades 18 upon the agitator, said blades arranged to co-act with the blades 18 upon the agitator continuously agitating the enamel material within the tank. A cylindrical screen member 23a, formed of wire mesh or similar material and provided with a bottom wall 24 is located within the tank as shown in Fig. l, the annular bead 25 formed upon the upper free edge of said screen resting upon the iii-turned annular flange 9 of the cylindrical portion 8 of the hopper, said screen being of a diameter slightly less than the inner diameter of the ring 1G and of a depth sufficient to bring the lower wall thereof into close proximity to the upturned scraper blade Q0.
Vvlhen in use the tank is filled with the enameling material and the shaft ll continuously rotated, carrying therewith the agitating dasher above described. rlhe diagonal blades 18 in combination with the oppositely disposed diagonal ribs 22a cause a continuously swirling motion of the enamel within the tank and as above described the down-turned scraper blades 19 prevent the heavier portion of the material from settling to the bottom of the tank continuously agitating the material at the bottom of' the tank while the rip-turned scraper blades Q0 prevent any of the heavier portion of the enamel from adhering to the under side of the screen. rlhe articles desired to be coated with enamel are dipped within the screen member, said screen protecting the article being coated and the hands of the operator from coming into contact with the rotary dasher.
l claim:
l. The combination with a dipping tank of cylindrical form, of a cylindrical screen mounted within said tank and spaced from the side and bottom walls thereof and a ro-f tary agitating device located within said dipping tank and-between said cylindrical. screen and the bottom and side walls of said dipping tank.
tank between said screen and the bottom wall of said tank, and upwardly extending blades attached to the periphery of said disk and located between the side walls of said cylinder and said screen.
3. The combination with a dipping tank of the character described of a rotatable agitating dasher provided with an open cento, and a cylindrical screen located within said tank and extending within the open center of said dasher.
el. The combination with a dipping tank of cylindrical form of a plurality of diagonally disposed ribs located around the inner surface of said tank, a disk rotatably mounted in the bottom of said tank, up vardly extending diagonal blades mounted upon said disk, said blades disposed at an angle to said ribs, means for continuously rotating said disk and a cylindrical screen mounted within said tank and extending downwardly between said blades.
5. rllhecombination with a dipping tank of cylindrical form, of a plurality of diagonally disposed ribs located around the inner surface of said tank, a disk rotatably mounted within said tank, upwardly extending diagonal Vplates mounted upon said disk, a ring located at the upperextremities of said blades and connected thereto, means for rotating said disk, and a cylindrical screen mounted within said tank and extending downwardly within said ring.
6. rEhe combination with a dipping tank of cylindrical form, of a vertical shaft extending through the'lower wall of said di aping tank and concentric therewith, a disk fixedly mounted upon the upper extremity of said shaft and spaced from the bottom wall of said tank, down-turned radially disposed scraper blades mounted upon the under side of said disk, lip-turned radially disposed scraper bladesmounted upon the upper side of said disk, an 1up-turned annular flange provided around the periphery of said disk, upwardly extending scraper blades connected tov said flange, a ring located at the upper extremities of said scraper blades and connected thereto and a. cylindrical screen mounted within said tank and extending downwardly within said ring, said screen provided with a bottom wall located adjacent'said Lip-turned scraper blades,
ln testimony that l claim the above, l
have hereunto subscribed my name.
