BRAKE-OPERATING MECHANISM.
To all whom, it may concern Be it known that 1, Nine Knonn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brake-Operating Mechanism, of which the following is a specifica-' I tion, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof. The invention relates to mechanism for operating brakes of railway cars, its objects 11 of Fig. 2';'"Fig. 2 is a detail elevation of the device, some parts being broken away;

The brake staff 10 is of ordinary form, its
upper end being journaled in a bracket 11 adapted for attachment to the wall'of a car. An operating ratchet 12 is fixed upon the staff above the journal, and a holding ratchet 13 is fixedtthereon below the bracket. 'A'
hand-operated pawl 14, pivoted to the bracket 11, cooperates with the' holding ratchet 13. A head, preferably in'the form of a casing 15, is swiveled upon the upper end of the' 'staif adjacent the ratchet 12,:

A handle 18 is pivotally attached to the pawl, as shown at 19, and projects through a suitable aperture, ,20 in the casing 15, affording means for throwing the pawl into and out of engagement with the ratchet. Preferably, as shown in Fig. 3, the two ratchets are formed as an integral casting, the intervening metal forming a hub which fits and turns within the box 23 forming the staff bearing. The attachment of the ratchet block to the staff may be by means of a pin' 24 set through this hub. The location of the holding ratchet near the upper end of the staff is, however, not essential,the'setting mechanism being capable of use in connection with the ordinary foot-controlled holding device.

In car brake mechanism, in combination, a staff, a ratchet fixed thereon, a pawl cotiperating with the ratchet, an oscillatable support for the pawl, an oscillatable drop handle arranged to move the pawl into engaging relation with the ratchet when moved in one direction of its oscillation and ported within the casing for vertical movement and projecting through and having lateral movement in an opening in the easing, such opening having one: of its side walls inclined toward the median line of the hand lever, such lever being adapted by its lateral movement in one direction to force the pawl into engagement with the ratchet 10.
