ALEXANDER WEIDE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN HOISTING APPARATUS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,840, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WErnE, of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Hoisting Apparatus 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact de scription thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which, together with the letters and figures marked thereon, forms part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of my invention, Fig. 2, a central vertical section from front to rear of Fig. l, Fig. 3, an enlarged view of a portion of one of the hoisting-screws to exhibit the joint and bearing; and Figs. et and 5, respectively, end views of the top and bottom portions of Fig. 3.

To enable those skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe the same with particular-ity, making reference in so doing to the aforesaid drawing.
A is a platform for the recept-ion and carriage of that which it is desired to elevate. B B are two lvertical screws fitted to revolve in bearings C. Said screws, being of great length, are made in one or more sections, b, each, and are fitted together by a joint, shown at Figs. 4 and 5, consisting of a tenon, d, which iits between two jaws, e c, while a central pin proceeds from said tenon into a corresponding cavity between the jaws e e. The joint is entirely surrounded by the bearing C', which' clasps it around, as shown in the drawing, the body of the screw at this point being of a sufficiently less diameter to allow of the collar of the bearing to be countersunk within the screw-threads. F F are two semicircular nuts, which are carried upon each end of the platform A, and which engage with the screws B B. A bracing-collar, G, extending from each end of the platform A just below the nuts F, embraces each of the screws, having a slot at each end for the passage of the shank of the bearing C'. Miter-gear wheels G G, carried upon the lower part of screws B B, are tted to engage similar gear-wheels H H carried upon a horizontal shaft, I, which has upon it the two loose pulleys J J, which are so connected to an engine by bands that they revolve in opposite directions to one another, which is accomplished readily by fitting one with a direct band and the other with a crossed band, communicating with two drivingpulleys carried upon one shaft, and which it has been deemed unnecessary to show in the drawing. A clutch, K, is carried upon the-shaft I between the pulleys J J', by means of which either of said pulleys may be connected to the shaft at pleasure, and the screws B B made to turn so as to send the platform A up or down at will upon the screws. A series of bell-crank levers, l, and rods m communicates with the operating-lever o of the clutch, and with a vertical rod, P, and chain Q, connected at the top and bottom by pivoted bars q, and passing vertically the whole height ofthe hoist. This rod P is provided with stops s s at top and bottom placed in the path of the ascending or descending platform A, whereby the motion of said platform is communicated to the rod l?, and so through the intervening rods and levers to the clutch, constituting an automatic reversing device. The motion of the screws may be reversed also, by hand and at will, by means of the chain Q.
This mechanism constitutes a safe, cheap, and reliable hoisting apparatus. `The idea of making the vertical screws in sections contributes greatly to its cheapness and durability.
Having described kmy invention, that which I deem new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of the screws B B, platform A, and half-nuts F F, and the bearings C C', substantially as speciiied.
2. The combination of the subject of the lastabove claim with the horizontal shaft I, mitergear wheels H H G G, loose pulleys J J', and clutch K, substantially as speciied.
