IMPROVEMENT IN STEM-WINDING WATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,782, dated August 8, 1871.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, SAMUEL J ACCARD and JUsTiN JAoeARD JAQUEs, of St. Groix, canton de Vaud, Switzerland, have invented a new and Improved Stem-findingfateli5 and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specitication.
Figure l represents a face view of our improved watch. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the same taken on the plane of the line X X, Fig. 1.

This invention relates to a new steinavinding and setting watch of that kind in which, by press ure against the stem the setting, and by the clos in g ofthe case the winding-attach]nent is thrown into gear. Our invention consists in improving' stem-winding watches, as hereinafter fully described and subsequently pointed out in the claim.
A in the drawing represents the watch-case. B is the stem of the saine, fitted upon a squared arbor, a., on which it has a short longitudinal play. e is the spring-catch for holding' the lid of the case closed, it being operated by the slidin stein to open the said lid inthe ordinary manner. The arbor c carries a loose crown-wheel, l), which is in gear with the winding, and another loose toothed wheel, c, to be thrown in gear with the setting appa 1atus. A sliding clutch, d, on which the wheel c is secured, is iitted upon the arbor a, and serves either' to throw the wheel b into gear or to throw the wheel c against the wheel h ofthe setting mechanism. D is a springlever secured to the watch-ease, and connected with the clutch l so as to hold the same against the wheel b. E is a lever pivoted to the ease,
and interposed between the catch c and the lever D. F is a spring-lever fitted under D and provided with a pin, j", that projects through the rim of the case, as shown. The lever F is also provided with a projecting shoulder, g, as in Fig. 2.
The apparatus operates as follows: Then the watch is closed the springclutch d-it becoming a spring-clutch by its connection with the lever D is held against the wheel b so that the iatch maybe wound up. In fact, as long as the watch is closed its hands cannot be set. Then the watch is opened a strong push against the stem will throw the lever E against D, causing the same to carry the clutch off the wheel b and to hold the wheel c against h.. This motion carries the lever D over the shoulder g, when the lever F will spring up to bring the said shoulder against the back edge of the leverI D. The latter lever is thereby locked so as to retain the setting apparatus in gear with the stein. Then the watch is closed the lid will strike upon the pin f and will thereby clear the lever D of the shoulder g, allowing said lever to spring back and throw the clutch in gear with the winding apparatus.
It will be seen that the apparatus operates to a great extent autoniaticallyi. c., with the opening or closing ofthe lid. le are, however, aware that similar devices have already been in use, and do not claim as our invention the lever l), nor the clutch or wheels b c,- nor do we claim the projecting pin fi'or throwing the winding a1r paratus in gear by the closing lid; nor the application of the sliding stem for throwing the setting apparatus in gear 5 but That we do claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
