SMOKE-HELMET.

, To all whom it'may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN NE MA a citizen ofthe United States residing at New York, in the-county ofNew-York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke- Helmets; and I do hereby declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable othersskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.- i

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in smoke helmets "or respirators for firemen, mechanics, laborers, and all persons whose work is of such anature that they are constantly exposed to smoke, dust or deleterious gases.

The principal object of this invention contemplates the provision of a smoke helmet which maybe readily positioned over the face of the wearer and which carries means for preventing all smoke and gas from entering the helmet.-

A further object of this inventionis to construct the helmet'in [such manner that by merely placing it on the wearers face, the various parts of the device will act to effect za hermetic sealing of the edges of the helmet against the adjacent 'portioniof the wearers face and head.

The above and additional objects are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claim which is appended hereto and forms a part of this application.

WVith reference to the drawings, wherein I have illustrated the preferred embodiment of my invention as it is reducedto practice, and throughout the several views of which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the helmet. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the helmet disclosing the arrangement of the interior members; and Fig. i is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2. illustrating in detail the sealing flap carried by the face of the helmet.

Proceeding now to the description of the drawings, the helmet includes a face ring 1 formed of wire or other similar and suitable material and shaped to approximately conform to the contour of the human face. approximatelymid-way the length thereof are the spaced semi-circular ribs 2 and 3, held in rigid fixed relation toeach other by vertical stays 1, 5 and 6. The members 3, 4, 5- and 6 arepreferably wrapped with a cloth or fabric of any suitable. nature for v the obvious purpose of protecting the wearers' face. Connected at their upper terminals to the stay 5 and at their lower termi- -,nals to the lower portions of the sides of the ring 1, are a pair of arcuate stays 7 and 8. A similar set of arcuate stays 9, .10

and 11, respectively connect the members .4, 5 and 6 to a central point at the upper curved portion of the ring 1, as at 12. An eyelet 13 is formed integral with the members 9 and 11 to form a convenient means 7 for hanging the helmet on the wall within, easy reach of the user of the device. A sub-' stantially semi-circular stay '14 is carried by the; lower cross member 15 of the ring 1, and extends forwardly therefrom, being of smaller size than themembers' 2 and 3.

Connecting the member 5 with the terminals of the crossbar 15 are a pair. of arcuate stays 16 and 17 which may be wrapped to the members 14 at the inner terminals thereof by a suitable cloth or ,fabricstrip-IS.
