COIL-TERMINAL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, JESSE E. MATEER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of VVilkinsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Coil-Terminals, of which'the following is a specification.
My invention relates to'binding posts for electrical apparatus and particularly to binding posts adapted for attachment to coils in, order to form the terminals thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive-binding post or terminal member for a coil that may be secured thereto with a small amount of labor prior to impregnating the coil with an insulating compound, and that is so constructed as to permit o f-ready and thorough cleaning after impregnation of the coil so that good electrical connections may be made therewith.
A further object is to provide the binding post or terminal member with a shield or 25 guard whereby the insulation of the coil is protected from injury by the means for making connections to the member.
My invention is illustrated in theaccompanying drawing, Figure 1 of which is a 80' plan view of a device embodying my invention and applied to a coil, only a portion of which is shown. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device of Fig. -1, the insulation of' the coil to which it is applied being shown partially in section.
The present device comprises a frame 1 made from a stripof sheet metal that is folded, and the lower ply of which is straight, while the upper ply isbent to pro- I 40 vide an intermediate inverted U-shaped bridge 2 having an aperture for the reception of a clamping bolt 3. A terminal lead 4 of a coil 5, is soldered between the'folds of an extension on the frame, substantially In applying the frame 1 to the coil '5, it is held in position upon the first, or primary, layer of insulation upon the coil, and the tape constitute ing tne secondary or subsequent layer of insulation is wound overthe fiat end portions of the frame in order to secure the same in position. The frame 1 is preferably applied to the coil, in the manner indicated, prior to the impregnation of the coil with 66 a suitable insulating compound, the hardening of which assists in securing the frame v or irregularly surfaced to the coil. The insulating compound is then removed from the upper and lower faces of the bridge to permit of. making good electrical connections therewith. An apertured clip 6, that is secured to the end of a conductor to be connected to the terminal of the coil,is placed against the upper face of the bridge, and the clamping bolt 3 is then inserted and a nut 7 is applied to its lower end, for the purpose of clamping the terminal clip tightly against the upper and lower faces of the bridge, a washer 8 being preferably interposed between the clip 7 and the head of the bolt. I By reason of the simplicity of the shape of the terminal device, it may be readily and thoroughlycleaned so that good electrical connections may be made thereto and,
since the clamping bolt 3 is not attached to the frame when the coil is impregnated, the cleaning of threaded, or other rough auxiliary parts, is avoided. By reason of the provision of the bridge 2, the connections to the device may be readily made. The lower ply of the frame constitutes prevents injury to the insulation of the coil that might occur either because of length of the shank of the bolt, or by tools'u'sed in making connections to the device.
I claim as my invention:

5. An electrical terminal comprising a, single metal piece that is folded to have a one ply base, a one ply substantially U- shaped portlon spaced from the base, two two-ply extensions forming a part of the base, and means for attaching a conductor to said U-shaped portion.
6. electrical terminal for 'a coil of 15 wire comprising a single metal plece folded 'to form a single ply base member-having two-ply extensions for attaching the same to the coil of Wire, and a single ply bridge portion that is spaced from said base.
