WILLIAM LOWY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
STREET-CLEANING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed May 26, 1914. Serial No. 840,995.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, lVILLIAM LowY, a sub ject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Street-Cleaning Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to street cleaning apparatuses and consists in the construction, arrangement and combination 0 arts as will be hereinafter fully specified and set forth in the annexed claim.
In the accompanying drawing similar reference letters denote corresponding parts and Figure 1 is a side elevation; Fig. 2 is a top plan View and Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
The new apparatus consists of a vehicle composed of a frame a, wheels I), b, of which I; may be driven from a motor a or otherwise and from which movement is transmitted to sprocket wheels I) through the medium of sprocket chains 6 The wheels I) are fixed to a crank spindle d, cl which is adapted to impart reciprocatory movement to a brush f through the medium of a rod 6 which at its free end, as at e, is notched to engage around the spindle of the wheels 6 around which the rod 6 will swing during the reciprocatory movement.
Bemovably mounted in the frame a is a receptacle 9 which at the end facing the brush f is open and at the opposite end has a swinging door 9 or the like. The bottom of the box or receptacle 9 is sloping at its forward open end, as at 9 and has secured to it transversely a metal platei having an outwardly and downwardly projecting part i which serves as a blade or scraper and the lower edge of which is adapted during oper- Copies of this patent may be obtained for ation to slide on the ground or pavement. The box has lateral longitudinal flanges g which at the rear rest on pins h projecting upwardly from the frame a. These pins normally hold the box 9 in a somewhat forwardly inclined position. When the vehicle moves in the direction of the arrow 00 the blade 2" will scrape up the snow, dirt, etc., while the brush f through the medium of the crank cl will be caused to reciprocate and sweep the scraped up matter into the box 9.
Normally, that is when the apparatus is in use, the front part 9 of the bottom of the box 9 will be close to the ground. When the apparatus is not in use while the vehicle is in motion or when the vehicle travels over uneven ground, the box can be lifted. To this end I provide cams j to support the forward ends of the flanges g of the box, and whereby the box may be raised.
The collected matter can be easily removed from the box on opening the door 9 What I claim is:
In a street cleaning apparatus, the combination with a propelled vehicle having a frame, of a receptacle having an opening in its front, a door at its rear and lateral longitudinal flanges, projections on said frame on which the rear parts of said flanges loosely rest and which hold said receptacle normally in a forwardly inclined position, and adjustable means on said frame adapted to cooperate with said flanges to raise the front end of said receptacle when not in use.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence oftwo witnesses.
WVILLIAM LOWVY.
