Be it` known that IRALPH A.'So1ionN enne, of New Yorlginthe county 'of New Yorkand State` of New York, have invented new and useful Means for Operating Switch-.Mechanism of which the following is aspecification, this application being a division of my application filed February 9,1914, Sei-iai No. 817,472.
My invention relates to -means for operating switch mechanisms and particularly when such mechanisms are placed inv sockets or other receptacles especially when adapted for carrying electric light lamps 0r attachment plugs. k
In the case of sockets ory other receptacles it is highly desirable to do awaywith the unsightliness caused byv protruding actuators, such as keys, chains and push-buttons. These actuators are a `distinct: drawback as a matterof appearance and particularly in the case. of very fine'lXtures and require. not only perforation of the socket or other receptacle but alsoperforation of the husk or socketl cover when-the latter is used as well as alinement of the perforations of socket and husk.
One object of my invention is to do away with such protruding actuators and another object is to provide simple but eflicient operatingmeans and other objects will be described below.
My rinvention consists partly inproviding a support for an electrical .appliance such, for example, as a lamp or attachment plug movable longitudinally in one direction to make the circuit and movable longitudinally in the other direction to break the circuit.
A feature consists in=h'aving the support more outwardly to make ythe circuit and inwardlyto break the circuit.
Another feature' consists in providing two relativelyI movable .members one of which has a spring to engage' a earnA on the other to provide such relative movement.
Other features will be described below.

In Figs. 1 to 8 inclusive the stationary porcelain block is made up of two counterpart pieces of porcelain 1, Fig. 8, and is provided with a contact finger 2 which cooperates with a spring Contact finger 3. `The two pieces 0f porcelain 1 which make up the stationary porcelain block are provided upon their inner faces with registering recesses l within which the springs 5 are pocketed. The movable porcelain block 6 has the screw shell 7 fastened to it byl means of bolts 8 and the center contact 9 is screwed onto the lower end of a post 10 so as to fasten said post to said block. The two pieces of porcelain 1 are made upon their inner faces with registering recesses 11 which pocket and support a metal contact ring 12 that is provided with two dow wardly extending flexible contact fingers 3 cooperating with an enlargement 111l provided on the post 10. The contact ring 12 is made with an extension 15 that is fastened to the porcelain block 1 by means of a bolt 16 which serves also to hold the two parts of the porcelain block together and llO 10. In this form of my invention the cam or'enlargement 2O von post l0 has two cam faces each ofwhich acts with one of the springs 5 to yieldingly hold the blocks l and 6 against relative movement but lwhen `move ment of block 6 is manually started acts to provide a ouick make and quick break between the enlargement 14 Aand contact Hngers 13 by an endwise or longitudinal movement of the post 10 and screw shell 7, such movement outwardly making the circuit and inwardly breaking it.`
In the form of my invention shown in Fig. 9 the screw shell 7 is secured to the underside of a porcelain block 21 provided with a center contact 9 screwed onto the lower threaded extremity of a post 22 which is thus rigidly connected with said porcelain block bythe center contact. The post 22 extends upwardly through the porcelain block 1l which for construction reasons may the line wires 27. The other line wire 28 is connected with a binding post 29 forming part of a fixed contact member 30 mounted within block 1. The lower end of the fixed contact member 30 extends below porcelain block 1 and into a notch formed in the porcelain block 2]A where it is provided with an enlargement or head 3 rl`he head 31 cooperates with a pair of spring jaws or contacts riveted or otherwise secured to and in electrical contact with the screw threaded shell 7. Normally the porcelain block 21 will occupy the position shmvn in Fig. 9 with the contacts 24 and separated and the contacts '30 and 32 separated, said block being held in this position by the engagement of the springs 3 with the underside of the beveled cam or enlargement 20. IVhen it is desired to close the circuit through this switch device the lamp. attachment plug or other device connected with the screw shell is pulled downwardly until the largest part of the beveled cnlargeu'ient 2() passes the angular rmrtions of the springs 5 .vhereupon said springs act upon the upper beveled side of the enlargement 20 to accelerate the downward moven'ient of post 22 and parts conneg-A herewith, thus producing a quick malte between contacts 24 and 25 and contacts 3l and 32 and this by a longitudinal movement of" the bridging member. As will be observed in this form of my invention the screw shell 8 may be shifted from closed position to open positionor vice versa and when so shifted the springs 5 serveto hold it against return movement. In this form of my invention the porcelain block 21 and screw shell 7, like corresponding parts G and 7 in Fig. 1, constitute the supporting member for the supported member which may be a lamp, attachment plug or other device. In both forms of my invention so far described as well as in that presently to be described the insulating lining 35 and shell 36 are without perforations for laterally projecting actuators for the reason just given, namely, that I do not use laterally projecting actuators which require perforation of the insulating lining and of the kouter shell.
lNhen my improved switch device is used to hold a lamp and is arranged in a more or less elevated position as shown in Fig. 11 I prefer to provide the lamp with the attachtachment comprises two metal strips one of which'37 is bent near its middle to form a loop 3S adapted to extend h alf way around the shank of the bulb 39 with the ends 40 of said part bent outwardly and having their extremities hooked as at 41. The other part of this attachment comprises a metal strip 42 bent to form a loop to extend around the other half of the bulb and having its extremities fastened to the part 38 by means of two screws 43. This form of attachment may be used with any one of the switch devices herein shown and by grasping either or both of the arms 40 the operator may conveniently move the` lamp to operate the switch device.
In Fig. 12 my invention comprises a screw shell '7 secured to a movable porcelain block 6 .carrying a spring contact finger 44 cooperating with a contact 45. The block G carries a center contact 9 which ,fastens a stem 10 thereto, said stem, like the stem 10 of Fig. l., eoperating with a pair of Contact lingers lllprojecting from a metal ring 15.

The ring 15 is made with an extension 45 provided near its extremity with athreaded hole into which is screwed the threaded end of the shank of another lcenter contact 46. The stem 10 is, like the stem 10 of F ig. 1, made with a cam or enlargement 2O coperating with a pair of springs 5 pocketed within a stationary porcelain body 47. its lower end the body 47 is made with a skirt 48 inclosing screw shell 7, and at its upper end with a plug 49 upon the outside of which is arranged a second screw shell 50. This screw shell 50 is held in place on plug 49 by lugs 51 which are bent inwardly into recesses 52, and carries the contact 45 which may be integral therewith or soldered thereto. The porcelain body 47 may be made intwo counterpart sections fastened together by bolts 53. The shell 50 and center contact 46 constitute engaging means provided upon this form to attach to the terminals in. the mouth of an ordinary socket.
1n Fig. 12 I have shown my invention embodied in a switch connector or union adapted to be used, for instance, an ordinary lamp or cord plug with an ordinary socket.
That I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising switch mechanism including an immovable contact and a contact movable into and out of engagement with said immovable contact; a support movable longitudinally in one direction to make the circuit and in the opposite direction to break the circuit through said switch mechanism; and an electrical appliance carried by the support and having a terminal in circuit with said switch mechanism.

A device of the character described comprising two blocks of insulating material connected together with provision for limited relative movement toward and from each other; a stem mounted on one block provided with 'a pair of cam surfaces; a pair of springs carried by the other block engaging opposite sides of the stem an cooperating with the cam surfaces to hold the blocks yieldingly against relative displacefliect a quick relative movement thereof after said relative movement has been manually started; and a contact on said other block coperating with said stem t o control the circuit of the device.
7. A device of the character described comprising two blocks of insulating material connected together with provision for limited relative movement toward and from each other; a pair of terminals on one of said blocks; a screw shell, center contactand a stem mounted on the other block, said stem being provided with a cam; and a spring on the first-mentioned block coperating with the cam to hold the blocks vieldingly against displacement and to effect a quick relative movement thereof after said relative movement has been manually started to complete the circuit through said terminals and screw shell and center contact.
