ELECTRIC BRAKE FOR AIITOIVIOBILES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 21, 1916.
Application filed June 23, 1915. Serial No. 35,967. I
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID M. DAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Gary, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented new and u eful Improvements in Electric Brakes for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to brakes and more particularly to electro-magnetically operated brakes. k
The principal object of my inventlon is to provide an elcctro-magnetic braking mechanism which consists of a plurality of electromagnets so arranged and controlled as to permit a gradual application of the brake and furthermore to insure a positive operation thereof in the event that certain of the electro-magnets become deenerg zed.
Another object of my invention is to provide a device of thls character having guide members associated with the armature 1n such a manner as to prevent partial rotary movement thereof and consequent distorting or breaking of the connection between the armature and the braking element.
With these objects in view, and others of a similar nature which will appear as the invention is more fully understood, the invention consists in the features of construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical central section showing my device connected to a brake elementof a motor vehicle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken through the line A-A. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one end wall of the cylinder showing the electro-magnets attached thereto. Fig. 4 is a diagraminatical view of the circuit including the electro-magnets and the rheostat.
v In the present instance I have shown device attached to the horizontal rod of the common form of band brake as is used on motor vehicles and the like, the casing for my device being secured to the under side of a body of the vehicle.
Referring to the drawings in detail 1 designates a standard or support which is bolted or secured to the under side ofthe body of the vehicle in any suitable'manner. Horizontally disposed upon the support 1 is a cylinder or casing 52 which is made of any suitable non-magnetic material such as brass or copper. Secured to the inner face of the ity to each other, the outer series being spaced about the edge of the Wall for purposes hereinafter described. Arranged within the casing in proximity of the electromagnets is an armature 5 which is of a disk formation and which is provided with radial slots or depressions'ti. These slots 6 receive guide rods 7 which are secured to the inner wall of the cylinder and are longitudinally disposed thereon. The guide rods 7 are formed of non-magnetic material and may be cast with the casing or made. separately therefrom and rigidly secured to the casing by anysuitable means. The end portions of the guide rods 7 and those ends which are disposed adjacent the electro-magnets are provided with upwardly extending lugs 8 which act as abutments and limit the forward movement of the disk of the armature 5. Axially secured to the disk 5 and projecting through the end wall 9 of the cas-.
ing 2 is a rod 10, the outer'end of which is provided with a yoke 10' to receive a horizontal rod 1 of the braking mechanism.
In Fig. 4 I have shown a circuit 11 having a suitable source of energy such as a battery 12, the electro-magnets 4 being arranged in parallel. 13 represents the rheostat which permits the gradual application of the brake for varying the resistance of the circuit and consequent varying of the magnetic flux. It will be seen from the foregoing construction that when it is desired to apply the brakes the operator closes the circuit through the rheostats .13. The armature 5 being disposed within the magnetic field of the electro-magnets 5, upon energizing the magnets 4, the armature 5 is attracted thereby causing the rod 10 to move forward and actuate the horizontal rod 1 which in turn tightens the band about the hub. In providing the armature with the radial depressions adapted to move within the guideways 7 I have'prevented any possible rotary movement of the armature which prevents any turning of the rod 10 and consequent distorting or breaking of the llO with the poles of the electro-magnets which if permitted to do so, would cause a mutual injury to the electro-magnets and the armature. In arranging the electro-magnets in circular concentric series I have uniformly distributed them about the walls of the cylinder so as to obtain the maximum amount of pulling force. The outer'series of ma'g nets are arranged in spaced relation to allow the guide members to ,be disposed adjacent the end Wall of the cylinder;
I have formed a casing 2 and a 'guiderod 7 of non-magnetic material so as to cause the magnetic lines of force'which'emanate from a invention 'Will be thoroughly understood without requiring a more extended explana-v ti'onand therefore the'same hasbeen omitted.
What is claimed is I 1. In an electro-magnetic brake mechanism, the-combination'with a brake element, of a cylinder, a rod connected to said elementand extending through one end wall.
of said cylinder, an armature formed on the opposite end of said rod, said armature having depressions'formedin the peripheral edge thereof, guide-rods secured to the inner wall ofvsaid cylinder and cooperating with" said depressions, and electro-magnets. arranged within said cylinder and secured to the. opposite end wall thereof.
2. In an electro magnetic brake mechanism, the combination with a brake element, I
of a cylinder, arod connected to said ele- V ment and extending through one end Wall of said cylinder, an armature formed on the opposite'end of said rod, said armature havcluding said magnets in multiple, and a I rheostat in said circuit.-
In anelectro-magnetic. brake mechanism, the combination with a brake element,-
of a cylinder, a rod connected to said element and extending through one end wall a of said cylinder, an armature formed on the opposite end ofsaid rOdfs'aid armaturehaving depressions formed in the peripheral edge thereof, guide rods secured to the inner wall'of said cvlinderand cooperating with said depressions, lugs formed'on the inner extremities of-each of said guide; rods, and elect'romagnets arranged within said cylinder and secured to the opposite end wall thereof, said lugs adapted to limit the forward movement of said armature with respect to said magnet.
4. In an electro-magnetic brake'mechanism, the combination with a brake element, of a cylinder, a rod connected to said element'and' extending through one wall of said cylinder, electromagnets arranged Within the cylinder and secured to the opposite end wall thereof,'an armature connected to one end of said rod and disposed within saidcylinder, means mounted on said cylinder and cooperating with said armature for-preventing circumferential movement of thelatterr I In testimony whereof I afiix my'signature in presenceof-two witnesses.
DAVID M. DAILEY.
