MACHINE FOR CLOSING BOTTLES BY MEANS OF METAL CAPS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 1 1, 1916.
Application filed May 31, 1913. Serial No. 771,089.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURIDS Gnono KJJERBEjLLING, subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Valby, near Copenhagen, Denmark, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for Closing Bottles by Means of Metal Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in machines for closing bottles by means of metal caps.
In all hitherto known machines for the purpose named the bottle neck and the member of the machine in which the closing of the bottle is to take place, have been brought together under a more or less powerful shock which often causes breaking of the bottle. This disadvantage has been avoided by the present invention. Furthermore the aflixing of the caps in prior machines is effected through suitable pistons acting upon a rubber ring, this action being effected through rather violently acting means, such as heavy weights, or strong springs actuated by cam disks and the like,
able to exercise the strong pressure (1500- 2000 kg.) required by the rubber ring for performing its work. These violent means are avoided by the present invention, the machine being made to act easily .and without shock, though at the same time as powerfully as desired.
The invention consists in a machine for applying caps to bottles operated by hydraulic or pneumatic means.
A machine according to the present invention is shown in the drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a front elevation of the machine partially in section and Fig. 2 a side view of part of the same, likewise partially in section.
Referring to the drawing 1 designates a bottle resting on atable 2, adapted to move up .and down in a bushing or sleeve 3 through which sleeve extends a rod 4 connected with links 5. The links are connected with a lever 6 pivoted in a fork 7 which is firmly connected to an extension 8 on the underside of a table 9. In a bore running through said table 9 and extension 8 works a rod 10 having at its upper end a piston 11, which piston is acted upon hydraulically or pneumatically by means of a hollow rubber container 12, which is connected to a pipe 13 leading to a cook 14,
the plug of the cook 14 is turned one quar ter of a'revolution, the bore 18 thereof will register with the tube 13 and let the pressure fluid flow from the tube 13 out through the pipe 16. The cock has two branches 17 and the bore 18 extends entirely across the plug whereby alternate admission and exhaust of pressure fluid to and from the pipe 13 may be obtained by turning the cock in one direction, the pipe 15 and one of the bores 17 being in communication when the plug is turned half a revolution and the pipe 16' and the bore 18 being in communication after the cock has been turned 90 from either of the preceding positions.
The plug of the cock can be provided with a larger number of bores, so that a shorter turn of the cock will be required for putting the rubber container 12 in communication with the pressure fluid inlet and outlet pipes.
In a similar manner (see Fig. 1) a pipe 19 leads from a cook 20 to a hollow rubber ring 21. WVhen pressure fluid is introduced in the rubber ring 21, the same is caused to expand whereby the piston 22 is carried downward acting upon the rubber pressure ring 23 which presses the cap round the bottle neck. When the pressure is removed from the rubber ring 21, the piston 22 is returned to normal position by the elasticity of the said rubber ring.
When the pressure and the areas acted upon by the same are given suitable values, the desired action can be obtained, and by controlling the position of the cook the action can be made as gradual as desired.
The closing of the bottle'is effected in the following manner: A bottle 1 is placed on tle.
it brings the cap on the mouth 7 thereof against the piston 24:, exerting for instance a pressure of 150200 kg. which is sufficient for compression of the elastic packing material used in the cap. The cock 20 is now opened admitting fluid to the rubber ring 21 which presses the piston 22 downward until the rubber ring 23, which is hereby compressed, has pressed the cap on the bot- The pressure is then exhausted from the rubber ring 21 by manipulation of the cock 22. and from the rubber container 12- by manipulation of the cock 14. The table is then again lowered by means of the V spring 26 acting thereon, carrying the bottle with it.
Copies of this patent may be obtained. for fiye cents each, by addressing the Commissioner That I claim is: A machine for closing bottles and the like by means of caps Which are pressed round the bottle neck, comprisinga rubber ring In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in presence of two witnesses;
