INTERMITTENT OPERATING MECHANISM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 14:, 1916.
Application filed April 19, 1915. Serial No. 22,418.
Operating Mechanism; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains'to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a' adapted to contact with the frame upon part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mechanically operated mechanism for operating washing machines, churns, etc., and consists essentially in the provision of a gear mechanism actuated by the rocking of a chair and affording means whereby power may be transmitted.
The invention comprises a simple and efiicient apparatus of this nature having various details of construction, combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in .the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
My invention is illustrated in the accom-. panying drawings, in which:
F igurel is a side elevation of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a front view. Fig. '3 is a detail view showing a singlesupport.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a base upon which the apparatus is mounted and B is a shaft journaled' in suitable bearings upon said base and upon which two beveled wheels C are loosely journaled and integral with each wheel is a ratchet wheel I). A driving shaft, designated by letter E, is journaled in suitable bearings and has a beveled gear wheel H at one end which is in mesh with thetwo gear wheels C and D. A seat, designated by letter K, has supports L fixed thereto, their lower ends being apertured and journaled upon the shaft B. Pawls, designated by letter I, are mounted one uponeach of said supports and each has a spring J bearing against the same to normally hold the end of the pawl in engagement with the teeth of said ratchet-wheel. The driving shaft has fixed thereto a sprocket wheel L which is connected by means of the sprocket chain N with a sprocket wheel 0 upon the shaft Q which 7 is adapted to drive the pounder R of a washing machine S. In order to limit the rocking movement of. the chair, I provide two segments T, having; curved slots therein,
and a thumb nut U is mounted upon a bolt U carried by one leg L and serves to hold the two segments in different relative positions and the outer end of each segment is which the seat is mounted to limit its backward and forward movements.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings, I have shown a slight modification of. my invention in which a single support L is provided, having pawls L pivotally mounted, one upon each side thereof and which engage the teeth of the ratchet wheels D integral with the beveled gears C.
.By the provision of a mechanical motor made in accordance with my invention, it will be noted that a person rocking a chair may cause a continuous rotary motion to be imparted to the driving shaft, the pawls being so arranged that each time the seat is tilted a partial rotary movement may be transmitted from the shaft B to the shaft L.
l/Vhat I claim to be new is A mechanical driving motor comprising lugs and pawls, screws fastened to said arms and segment members having elongated slots therein through which said screws pass, nuts fitted to the ends of the screws, said segment members adapted to contact with said frame to limit the swinging movement of the rack.
