Description
UNITED STATEsN PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD H. BANOROFT, OF SYRAOUSE, NEW YORK.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No.` 117,503, dated August l, 1871.
To all whom it muy concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. BANcRoET, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Tran smittin g Motion; and l do hereby declare that the follow-Y ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication.
This invention relates to improvements in apparatus for transmitting motion from the horizontal shaft of a wind-wheel revolving` around a vertical axis or other powers having` like action, and it consists in a connection of two cranks on the said shaft by connecting-rods and cross-heads, or slides with a pair of reciprocating rods, so that the cross-heads or slides, and their supports which are mounted on the horizontally-revolving frame by which the wind-wheel shaft is supported, may have the said horizontal. motion while transmittingthe reciprocating motion to the reciprocating rods, which impart motion to a revolving shaft by two other connecting-rods and cranks, both pairs of the cranks being set perpendicular to each other for passing the dead-centers. The invention also comprises an arrangement of one of the said reciprocating rods within the other, and the shaft driven by them abovethe lower ends, to which the connecting-rods are attached, and passing through a slot in each of said rods in a manner to economize space and simplify the cost of the apparatus, all as hereinafter described.
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved apparatus. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation taken on the line a w of Fig. l. Figs. 3 and 4 are diagrams illustrating the operation of the improved transmitting mechanism.
Similarletters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
A is a horizontal shaft ofthe wind-wheel, mounted on the horizontally-revolvin g cap or turn-table B, which is arranged, as such supports commonly are, on the top of the supporting-frame O of any approved kind, `and with a large vertical hole through the center for the apparatus for tran smitting the motion below, which is commonly done by a bevel-wheel on the said shaft gearing with a bevel-wheel on the top of a vertical shaft extending below and gearing with a horizontal shaft or other suitable means for transmitting motion to the machine to be driven, which arrangement is objectionable on account of its complication and cost, and because the resistance on the drivingshaft is in such direction as to cause the latter to turn around its vertical axis out of the position to take the wind properly to such extent that its efficiency is greatly impaired. I propose to transmit the motion by means of a pair of cranks, D, set perpendicular to each other, so that the resistance to the wind-wheel will be shifted from atendency to revolve the turn-table or cap to a direct resistance to the vertical rotation of the windwheel, and thereby have no tendency to turn the wheel out of the wind. The said cranks are each connected, by a rod, E, with a cross-head or slide for each one, F, being connected to areciprocating rod, G, and the other, F', to arod, H, and both working' on guide-rods or ways I, supported bythe turn-table. These rods G H are arranged in the vertical axis around whi ch the turn -table revolves, and the connections ofthe cross-heads are such as to admit of their rotation around the said rods, the one, G, of which is fixed in the bearings K, and H works in G, which is hollow. They are confined by their supports so as not to rotate, and actua-te the driving-shaft L through the medium of the connecting-rods M and cranks N, the said rods being connected to them one to each, and the cranks being placed 'on the shaft and arranged perpendicularto each other. ln this examplethe shaft L is arranged considerably above the lower ends oftherods GH, passing through a slot in each to allow them to work back and forth, and the connecting-rods M range backward along the said rods, so that the double connecting-rods and cranks attached to one reciprocating rod will not bind or lock, as they would do if rods M and shaft L were extended beyond rods H and G in passing the centers, owing to the variations in the distance in a straight line between the extremes of the two connecting-rods when at mid-stroke and at the end of a stroke, which differences amount to the sum of the sines ofthe angle between the perpendicular radiuses and the radiuses of the cranks when at mid-stroke. For instance, the distance from a to a in diagram Fig. 3 is less than from d. to d in a straight line, consequently the apparatus would lock if so connected; whereas, when connected as in diagram Fig. 4, the distances from a to a and from d to d, or any corresponding parts around the circle, being the same, no diflicultywill be encountered When connected backward in this Way. The arrangement is also desirable to economize space between the extremes of the apparatus. This arrangement admits of employing the upper support K for the rods; also for one ofthe supports of the shaft L. The shaft L may communicate motion to the machinery to be driven by belts or in any other approved Way. rllhe rod H has a hole through it lengthwise, for a rod or cord to pass up to the apparatus employed for opening or closing the vanes.
This arrangement of transmitting gear is simple and cheaper than the common arrangements, besides having the advantage in respect of the action of the resistance on the Wind-wheel before described.
It is not necessary that the shaft L pass through slots in the rods H and G, for the said shaft may be placed either front or back of said rods by having extensions like J, Fig. 2, on the rods G and H, for connecting the rods M, butl prefer to arrange them as I have shown.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The connection of the cranked Wind-Wheel shaft to the reciprocating a-nd transmitting-rods G H, substantially as described, said rods being arranged in the axis of rotation ofthe wind-Wheel support, substantially as specified.
2. The arrangement of one of the said tran smitting-rods Within the other, and the driving-shaft L relatively thereto, substantially as specified.
3. A mechanism for transmitting rotary motion from one crank-shaft to another, consisting of reciprocating and transmitting-rods G H and the connecting-rods M, When the shaft to Which motion is imparted, and the connecting-rods therefor, are arranged or geared back relatively to said sliding rods, all substantially as specified.
