Description

PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM VVIMER, OF FREEPORT, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LAND-ROLLERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 117,497, dated July 25, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it kno wn that I, WILLIAM WIMER, of Freeport, in the county of Stephenson and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Land-Roller; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon making a part of this speciiication.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of a land-roller, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing, in which* Figure l is a plan view, and Fig. 2 is a side view of my land-roller.
A represents a straight bar, of suitable dimensions, to which the three roller-frames, B and C C, are pivoted. The forward frame B is pivoted under the center of the ba-r A, and has a roller, D, mounted within it, as shown. The two rear frames C C are pivoted to the rear side ofthe bar A, and have also each aA roller, D, mounted within it. Around the rollers D D are placed bands a a. for marking corn. These bands are to be screwed onto the roller so that they can be easily removed when it is to be used as a roller alone. Under the rear part of each of the rear frames C C is pivoted a bar, b, which is held by a hook, d, so as to project beyond the outer end of 'said frame, and to the outer end of each bar is attached a cord with weight e for the purpose of making a mark the right distance from the mark made by the marker, so as to give a line to drive back by, obviatin g the necessity of set ting stakes, the line made by the weight coming between the team. In the front end of the forward frame B is a roller, E, with a clip, f, in which the tongue G is fastened, thus making a iieXible tongue capable of moving up and down and to either side, enabling the machine to turn very short, thereby obviating the necessity of putting the rollers D D so far apart :as when a reach is used between the front and back rollerframes; also, thereby lessening the draft.
It will be noticed that the bar A has four holes for the attachment of the rear roller-frames C C, said frames being represented as pivoted in the inner holes, bringing them close together, so as to enable them to pass through a narrow gate or bars; but when working they should be placed in the outside holes, thereby widenin g the amount 0f ground rolled.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
The within-described land roller :and cornmarker, consisting of the bar A, frames B and C (l, rollers D D with bands a c, bars b b with cords and weights e e, and the tongue G, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth:
In testimony that I claim the foregoingIhave hereunto set my hand this 27 th day of May, 1871.
VILLIAM VVIMER.
