JAMES E. EASTMAN, OF PITTSFIELD, NEW HAMPSHIRE.:
LANTERN-HOLDER.
Lit/arco.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E.-EAs'ri\IAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pittsfield, in the county of Merrimack and State of New Hampshire, have invented a new and improved Lantern-Holder, of
which the following is a f ull, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to a means for holding an ordinary lantern on a vehicle to constitute a vehicle lamp, so that a separate headlight 0f special construction will not need to be employed on the vehicle, and the ordinary lantern employed forthe purpose will be available for its ordinary uses when detached from the vehicle.
Objects of the invention are to provide a device of the indicated character comprising a lantern, a reflector, and clamp means to retain the lantern and reflector firmly seated on the holder. rlhe invention also has vfor its object to provide a device of the indicated character,-
kimproved with respect to strength and efficiency, and with a view to promote convenience and simplicity in the attachment and l detachment of the lantern.
The invention will be particularly eX- plained in the'specic description following. y
Reference is had to theA accompanying drawings forming part of'this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation'of a' lantern holder` and reflector embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a front view thereof; Fig. 3 is a horizontalsectional plan view, the section being taken on the line 3-3 Fig. 1; and Fig. l is a fragmentary side elevation of the reflector.
1n constructing a practical embodiment of the invention in accordance with theform given as an example, the holder comprises a platform or seat 10, provided at the underside with a suitable clamp for securing the holder to a vehicle. The clamp as illustrated comprises a top bar 11 and depending arms 12, in one of which is provided a clamp screw 13. Preferably the connection between the seat plate 10 and the clamp 11 consists of a socket 141 on the said seat plate I at the underside, a stud 15 indicated in dotted lines in Figs. l and 2 projecting up- Speccation of Letters Patent.

wardly from lthe top bar 11 of the clamp, and a clamp screw 16 taking into the side of the socket 14: to bind against the said vStud 15.'V
A reflectorv 17, concaved in horizontal section, is adapted to rest on the seat 10, and the base 17a of said reflector is curved in vertical section to conform to the curved base with whichV the ordinary lantern indicated by the letter VA in F ig. 1 is provided. The base 172l has formed thereon hook members 17b which extend downwardly at the sides thereof at the back and terminate in forward extensions adapted to be received' in holes lOain the seat 10. The reflector delsirably will have a .lens 18 preferably of red glass, the lens being held in'any suitable manner as by a flange 17C.
In' order to clamp the lantern and reflector firmly on'the seat 10, yprovide movable clamp elements 19, these being made ofwire inthe instance shown and given a curvature to conform approximately to the curvature of the base 17a of the reflector vand the corresponding base of the lantern.
Desirably two separate lclamp means are provided diametrically opposite at the b'ack and front of the seat. lBetween the `ends of the clamp elements 19 the same are pivoted as at 19a onwa link 20, which Ais made in the form of a'loop, the top bar 2Ol of which pivotally carries the clamp member 19, while the lower Vcross-bar 20b is rockably mounted on a lever 21 having the vgeneral form of a bell crank lever and being provided with a handle 21a. The loop of each link 20 is adapted to pass over a lug 10b formed on the seat plate 10, and the outer end of each clamp member 19 is adapted to seat on the adjacent lug 10b as at 19h. The lever 21 is fulcrumed as at 22a on a spring 22, which preferably is a bowed plate spring riveted or otherwise secured to the seat plate 10 as at 22", at about its center, leaving free resilient ends in which the levers are fulcrumed.
By the described construction a lever 21 may be swung on its fulcrum 22a to swing a link 2O upwardly and relieve the pressure of thespring 22 on the clamp member 19, so that said clamp member may be turned with the link 20 outwardly t0 clear the adjacent lug l()b of the seat plate, thereby releasing the reflector 17 and the lantern base. On the other hand, when the lever is Vse thrown in the opposite direction with the clamp members 19 in position over the reliector and lantern, each link 20 Vmay be swung on its upper cross-bar 20LL so that the lower end will be carried inwardly past the fulcrum 22 of the lever, thus placing the spring 22 under tension and subjecting 'the lever, link and clamp member 19 tothe pressure of the spring.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A lantern holder comprising a seat on which a lantern may rest, a reliector havinga base adapted to rest on said seat at a side of.
a lantern, the said base being formed to overlie a lantern base, and movable clamp means on the holder in position to detachably engage said reilector and' a lantern basev to clamp the saine on the said seat.
, 2. A lantern holder having means to sevcure the same in position and having a seat to receivea lantern, a reector having a base formed to receive the base of a lantern and rest on said seat, separate clamping means on the holder distant from each other, in positions to directly clamp a lantern base, bothk of said clamping means being mounted to swing into clamping positions above the seat or away from the clan'iping positions. o
3. A lantern holder having means to secure the same in position and having a seat for the lantern, and clamps mounted on the copies of this patent may` be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents thereof-to clamp a lantern in position, or to lowered positions away from said seat.
5.`A`la1itern holder having means to secure the same in vposition and having a seat provided with lugs projecting at the edge of the seat, and clamps pivoted to the holder beneath the seat and adapted to swing over the' Said lugs.
G. A lantern holder including means to secure the same in position and a seat to receive a lantern, and clamping means for a lantern Said clamping means including a spring beneath the seat, a lever fulcrumed on said spring, a clamp element for holding a lantern to the seat, and means swingingly connecting the said clamping element with the said lever.
7. A lantern holder having meansto secure the same in position and having a seat for a lantern, a reflector having a ,base adapted to receive a lantern base and rest on said seat, the said reflector having hook members on the base thereof and the seat having holes for receiving said hooks, and clamp means movably mounted on the holder to engage or disengage the said reflector.
8. A lamp holder having a seat to receive a lantern and clamp means comprising a bowed spring on the holder'beneath the seat, the said spring comprising a free arm, a bell crank lever fulcrumed on the free arm of the spring, a link rockably connected with the lever distant from the fulcrum thereofand a clamp member pivotally mounted on the link at the opposite end, and adapted to overlie the seat to engage a lantern thereon.
In testimony whereof l have subscribed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
.JAMES E. EASTMAN.
