Be it known that we, BmAN F. Primror, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Orange. in the county of Essex and State ofNew Jersey, and HERBERT A. COOK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of East Orange, inthe'county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Manufacturing Phonograph-Records, of which the following is a description.
Our invention relates to apparatus for manufacturing phonograph records, and more particularly to apparatus whereby a record shell may be provided with a backing suitable for supporting the record on a phonograph mandrel or other record sup- I Extending vertlcally upward from the rear.

disclosed and claimed in an application of Thomas A. Edison, Serial N o. 672,397, filed January 20, 1912 and is not a part of the presentinvention. The outerecelluloid shell 14 is shown at 15 as provided with a thin coating of rubber or other suitable yielding resilient material within whichis formed a plaster backing 16. Thecelluloid shell is formed at its ends with inwardly directed flanges 17 and 18, the lower flange 17 being formed with a longitudinally extending portion 17 which is adapted to fit closely about the fiange 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 8, whereby the record shell may bel supported at its lower end in axial alinement with the core 13. The upper flange 18 is of such inner diameter as to extend into proximity to the core 13 but not to contact ,-the

To protect the outer surface of the record shell against the deposit thereon of the backing material, we preferably provide a guard 21,v which may be in the form of an apron resting upon the upper portion of the record shell and extendingloutwardly and downwardly from the latter. rIhe guard 21 is formed with an inclined conical surface 21 lwhich is adapted to engage the edge of the record shell between the outer cylindrical surface thereof and the flange 18, to center the upper portion-of the said shell. By means of the flange 5 on the base 1 and the guard 21 the record shell is accordingly firmly held in aXial alinement with the core 13 and the inner surface of the backing is thus formed true or coaxial with the outer surface lof the record. The apron 21 may be supported by vertical rods y 22 secured to'and projecting .from the lower surface of a flange 23 formed on a collar 23 which is slidably mounted on the rod 12. The said apron is provided with a cen-l 4'tral opening 21 whereby` the core 13 may be moved through the same, the guard 21 being adapted to be supported when the cor'e is in a raised position or when there 1n Figa is no record shell in position on the apparatus, by the engagement of the collar 23 with the upper `surface of the core.

The catch 31, as shown, is provided with a locking nose. 33 which is yieldingly pressed into engagement with the rod 12, as by a spring 34, and also with a flat thumb piece 35 for operating the atch to disengage the nose 33 from the rod 12. rlhe elevation at which the rod 12 and the core 13 are held by the latch 31 isdetermined by notches 36, 37 and 38 at different elevations in the rod 12. A. projection 39 extends laterally from the rod 12 and is adapted to rest upon the upper portion of the sleeve 11 to support the rod 12 and core 13 in their lowermost positions, as shown in Fig 1.
To lock the guard in engagement with the upper surface of the record, I provide an arm 40 pivoted on the standard 6 and held against longitudinal movement on the latter by collars 41 engaging the upper and lower surfaces of the said arm, these collars beingheld in position as by set screws 42. The arm 40 is provided at its outer end with a hook shaped portion 43 adapted to surround the rod 12 land to engage the upper surface o'f the part 23, as shown in Fig. l.1, when it is desired to lock the guard in engagement with the top of the record shell. A projection 44 extends from the upper part of the arm 40 and is adapted to engage the under surface of the flange 23, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, to support the guard in elevated the core 13. i
In operating the apparatus hereinbefore described, the catch 31 is released and the lever 25 operated until the notch 37 in the rod 12 is brought in position to be engaged by the locking nose 33 (see.Fig. 6). In this position, as hereinbefore the record shell 1s completely closed by the core v13 and flange 5 "so that the'record material may be mtroduced as shown in Fig. 1 into the space Within the record shell 14 and around the core 13. After a. suflicient amount of backing material has been introduced within the record shell, vthe rod 12 and core 13 are elevated until the catch 31 enga ges the notch this operation being to raise -the notch 19 in the core above the record so as to prevent the formation of a rib on `the backing when the latter hardens, the core, however, still extending throughout the length of the record shell. With the parts in the position last described, the
support on a record mandrel. after whichy the core is lifted out of the backed up record shell.. During the initial portion of this lifting operation the guard 21 is held firmly in engagement with the top of the record and holds the latter firmly in position, as that the co're -i's verv the backing. lVhile we have described the preferred form of our invention, numerous changes may be made therein without departing from the spirit thereof; and we wish, therefore, not to be limited to the exact details herein disclosed.
What we claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of4 the United States is as follows:
1. In a device of the class described, the
'combination of means for supporting a record shell in a given position, and a forming core adapted to be positioned axially within 'said shell, said core being provided with means whereby backing material may be introduced' within said shell when the core is in its normal position within the latter, substantially as described.

10. In a device of the class described,'the

In a device of the class described, the combination of means for .supporting a record shell in a given position, a forming core adapted to be positioned axially Within said shell, said core permitting the introduction of backing material w-ithin said shell when for shielding the outer surface of the shell against the deposit of backing material thereon, means for producing relative movement axially of said core between the latter and said supporting means, and means coacting with said guard for holding said shell lirmly in position on said supporting means, substantially as described.
13. In a device of the class described, the combination of means for supporting a record shell or the like in a given position, a forming core a'daptedto be positioned axially within the shell, means comprising a rod connected to said core and a lever connected to said rod for producing relative movement axially of said core between said core'and said supporting'means, and means comprising a catch coacting .withv said rod whereby said core may bel held in inoperative position, substantially as described.
