KOMINUTER OR LINING PLATE FOR BALL-MILLS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 15, 1915. Serial No. 8,125.
To all 'whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER V: JEN- SEN, a subject of His Majesty the King of Denmark, and a resident of Devils Slide, 1n the county of Morgan and State of Utah, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kominuter or Lining Plates for Ball-Mills, of which the following is a specification.
This linvention relates to kominuter .or lining plates for ball mills, and more particularly to the builtfup type wiich includes a base and a detachable wearing portion or anvil.
An object of the present invention is to provide a base plate of such design and arrangement that it cooperates with the sinnlar and adjoining plates, whereby all are held tightly and wedgedly against the surface of the shell of the ball mill.
A further object is to provide, in connection with the afore-mentioned bases, a novel wearing lnember or anvil which extends over and protects the holding bolts of thev base to which it is secured, and in adas to seat against the heel of the next adjacent base.
A further object is to provide a built-up kominuter plate including a base and a wearing portion or anvil, wherein a small area only of the base is exposed, and such exposed portion is enlarged so as to successfully withstand the comparatively small amount of wearing action it receives. The enlargement of the heel end of the base valso provides an abutment against which the cent kominuter rests.
The foregoingfeatures' prevent the bue` kling of the bases, provide for the ready and quick detachment and renewal ofthe anvils, and promote and insure the long and of the kominuter plate.
Other objects and advantages will appear as the description proceeds, wherein it is to be understoodthat changes in the precise embodiment of my invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The preferable form of my invention is disclosed in the accompanying drawings, wherein Y Figure 1 is a view in side section of a shell of a boiler equipped with my improved extend through the plate adjacent the toe and are relatively -larger and of greater number than the second set of openings 9 which are located adjacent the heel of the plate and are provided with beveled side walls.
The toe of the base is beveled as at 10, while as the heel of the plate is thickened o"r enlarged by the transversely extending rib 11, a portion of which projects beyond the end of the heel and defines an overhanging ledge 12, the surface of which is beveled so as to receive the beveled toeA of the next adjacent plate therebeneath. ,In this manner, the toe of one base projects beneath and wedgedly engages the heel of the next adjacent base, whereby all wil-l be held tightly and wedgedly against the surface oi.' the ball mill shell 13. A slight space 14; exists between the toe and heel of the meet ing extremities of the bases, so that as the ' holding bolts 15 and 16 are tightened, the bases will be firmly anchoredin place and may shift to a slight extent for their proper and symmetrical arrangement.
A wearing block or anvil 17, preferably formed of manganese steel, due to the wearmg qualities of such metal, is provided with the curved nolrwearing face 18, which is adapted to rest snugly against theexposed face of the base. The anvil includes the thickened head v19, which gidually tapers toward the remote extremity or heel`20. A number'of openings 21 project through the anvil and aline or register with the main openings 8 with which the base is provided. The main holding bolts 16 are provided with the beveled heads 22 which seat within the beveled openings 21, andin connection with the securing nuts 23, are adapted to hold the anvil rigidly secured to, andin forced Contact with, the base which is proteeted thereby. The enlarged head of the Patented Marl/v, 1916.
through tlie'heel of the base 'and through suitable openings vprovided therefor in the ball mill shell, are completely protected by the tapering heel 2O of the anvil, the latter projecting some little distance therebeyond and stopping adjacent the exposed rib 11 which forms the thickened heel of the base. A
Iln order to somewhat lighten the construction' of the anvil and not in any wise 'interfere with the proper strength thereof, or reduce thel amount of wearing metal thereinl` it isprovided with suitable grooves,or 'recesses,`indicated by the dotted lines 26.- l
The-ivearing blocks or anvils With whichv each base is provided are preferably formed vof manganese steel, and may be easily and e'rqiediti'ously removed and replaced from time to time, as it becomes necessary. The
- particular manner in which the-bases =are formed prevents their dislodgment, 'even thougl-ii a nuinberof the anv1lsbe simultaneousl y removed', and, furthermore, the
interlocking the base and"vvedged en-v `gaigei'nent between `the same `hold them tightly and Ivveclged'ly against' the shell vof t thefball mill and prevent their buckling, f The thickened heel of each base, in addition to providing an abutment against which'the -anvil of jthe adjacent kominuter platemmay res-t, also reinforces the` onlyexposedportiony of the base and lthus prevents the 1- pren-nature wearing ol vthe same rbeyond servicc; the bases /being thus adapted to outl'ast hqldi'ng bolts prevents `their Wearand e dishgureinent, aiidinateiially increases the serviceable lifeA ot-'tlie sainmjf Having thus fully described my inven-y tion, what Iclaiin is:
l. A built-up koininuter/plate comprising aisbase with a bev'deled toc inddian undercut thickened heel, ananvil lprovided with a recess along its Airont extremity adapted toll receive the thickened-licei offtbe base olan adjacent ko'ninuter plate, and means projecting through,-saidfanvil and lbase adapted ftd secure ther same.- togetherand to a. sup- @poi-ting' surface.
i pnisingji liziseviiitlimainand supplemental lining .for ball mills combolt openings, and a Wearing block provided with openings adapted to aline with the main openings in said base, and projecting beyond and protecting the supplemental openings within said base.
3. A lining for ball mills comprising a base with beveled-,ends adapted to interlock vvith the similar ends offthe adjacent bases,
and an anvil secured upon said base projectingvahove the heel of the adjacentvbase.
'4. A built-up lining for b'allvmills com-f prising a base with main and supplemental vbolt openings, and with a beveled toe and an' undercut thickened heel adapted to receive the toe of an adjacent and similarbase therebe'neatli, a -wearing block ,provided with mai`n` holt openings alining withl'the main bolt openings ofsaid base, said 'vs'eitlff4 ing block provided with an overhanging 'en-'j4 larged head projecting above the heel of an adj acont base, and with a tapering heel profjecting across and protectingfthe supple;
