Be it known that I, RALPH C. Seymour, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Larchmont, in the county of VVestchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sheet- Handling Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to sheet handling machinery, and more especially to machines for collecting and folding sheets cut from a web. The objects and advantages of the invention will in part be set forth hereinafter, and will in part be obvious herefrom, and such objects and advantages are attained or eflectuated by the means or instrumentalities set forth in the appended claims.

The accompanying drawings, referred to herein and forming a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention,'the .same serving in connection with the description herein to explain the principles of the invention.

illustrating by way of example one embodiment of the invention, a mechanism is shown adapted to receive a running web which has been perfected in a rotary perfecting printing press. The web will be regarded as coming from the printing press at the upper left hand end of Fig. 1, and as then folded. Further, as embodied, the
sheets are cut in diflerent lengths from the running web and the sheets as cut and supplied are directed to one set or another of the subsequent devices, whereby the sheets are so folded or collected and folded that all edges except that at the back or fold are free or out. Thusthe product of the machine in its various sizes. in complete, folded and openable without being taken to and run through a trimming machine.
In the embodied form, as already indicated, the mechanism is adapted to receive the running and perfected web as from the printing press, and means are provided for cutting from the web at sheets of different lengths. The embodied .form of sheet cutting means comprises shafts 3 and 4:, carrying, respectively, a series of disks 5 and a series of disks 6. Mounted on the disks 5, by means of slotted web 10, arranged along the disks 5, is a cutter memher 7 said cutter member 7 being adjustable or removable by means of suitable devices,
such as the bolt and slot connection 9 between the cutter 7 and the web'lO A cooperating cutting member 8 is carried by a web 11, extending longitudinally along the disks 6. This cutter 8 is also adjustably and remo'vably mounted by suitable means such as bolt and slot 9. As the disks 5 and 6 rotate, cutters 7 and 8 cooperate to cut the web in a well known manner.
Another set of cooperating web cutting devices are provided in the embodied form, including a cutter member 12,1ong1tud1nally arranged along web 14 extending between sheets of different sizes to the subsequent.
, rollers, if desired, may be provided with the disks 5'. The complementary and c0 operating cutter member 15 is likewise carried by a web 17 extending longitudinally between the disks 6. The cutters 12 and 15 bers, as for example, cutters 7 and 8, a sheet will be cut off a length substantially equal to the circumference of the disks 5 and 6. When both sets of cutter members are used, shorter length sheets are cut off from the web and when the cutter members are diametrically positioned with respect to the disks 5 and 6, twice the number of sheets are cut off, each sheet being half the length of the sheets cut off when but one pair-of 00- operating cutter members are used.
Means are provided fordirecting the mechanisms so as to procure the desired product and in the embodied form thereof a series of throat bars 20 are mounted on a rod 21, and an opposing set of throat bars 22 I suitably mounted on' a rod 23.
Mounted. below the cutting devices already described are a set of rotating disks or rollers 24, carried on shaft 28, operating against a similar set of disks or rollers 25 carried on shaft 29. The end of the web is received between the' two sets of disks or rollers 24 and 25 and is directed forward through the machine. These disks or cut away portions 18 and 19 which operate to give a prompt and full release to the tail of the sheet. 1 a
In the embodied-form there are also pro vided a set or series of rollers or disks'26, carried on shaft 30, coeperating with a complementary or corresponding set 27 of such rollers or disks, carried on shaft 31, which serve the same purpose as the other set of rollers or disks. If desired one set of opposed rollers or disks may be rendered inactive in any suitable manner. As embodied, the lower disks 26 and 27 are so constructed. For thispurpose, the shaft 30 has slidable bearings in the machine frame, of suitable form, said bearings being adjustable by means of threaded rods 32. The shaft 31 is similarly mounted, and is provided with a similar threaded rod 33. Springs 34 press the opposed disks together when in operative position with the web. These disks 26 and 27 are also shown with cut away portions, which release for the tail ofthe sheet. 7 a

In the embodied form of means, a collecting cylinder 35 is provided for the,
longer sheets, mounted upon a suitable shaft 36. Said cylinder is provided with sheet taking grippers 38 adapted to receive the lead end of the web m, or of the severed sheet, at the instant it is severed from the web or just subsequently thereto, The form of folding means for the larger sheets, as

cylinder 35 is provided with a folding blade 39, which folding blade coeperates with a series of traveling folding jaws f0, adapted to fold and carry away thefolded sheet or group of sheets to delivery. In the embodied form the jaws 40 are mounted 'on a cylinder or series of disks 41 rotating with and mounted upon the shaft42. The cylinder 41 is adapted to deliver the sheets to any suitable delivery device, as for example a traveling pocket delivery .43 com-.

A suitable stripping device, of any approved or known form, may be employed to insure the folded sheets being delivered from the folding-jaws at the proper time and place. The cylinder or disk 41, if desired, may be'cut away or otherwise constructed to clear gripper or folding blade,
or both, on cylinder 35, as shown' at 47.
The cylinder 35 may be a collecting cylinder, and when so used, the gripper .38 will open toreceive the lead end of the second sheet upon the corresponding end of the first sheet, and the folding blade and folding jaws will be correspondingly timed so as to fold off the complete group of sheets when collected. A spring pressed roller' 57 mounted on a suitable arm may be utilized to hold the sheets-upon cylinder 35 while the gripper is taking the second sheet. .The particular actuating and timing mechanisms are not shown, as these in themselves are at present known in the art. 7
There are likewise provided by the invention means for receiving the shorter sheets from the sheet directing and forwarding means, and" for folding these so as to give all cut edges except at the fold. "In accordance with one feature of the in vention, furthermore, means are provided for collecting aplurality of shorter sheets arranged in series about the cylinder, or a plurality of groups of sheets so arranged, and coeperating with such collecting devices, means for folding each group of collected or associated sheets after It is. completed.
In the embodied form thereofpa cylinder is provided mounted upon a suitable shaft 51. The cylinder 50 is provided wlth a plurality of grippers each adapted to hold gether to the folding devices to be folded thereby. Such actuating and timing devices are not illustrated, as various forms thereof are at present known in the art.
The cylinder 50 is shown with cutaway portions to afford clearance for grippers 38. Means are provided for directing the sheets from the cylinder 50 to the folder,
and as embodied such means comprises strippers 56, and a series of 'top guides 58 and a corresponding series of bottom guides 59, downwardly inclined toward the folder, a series of. rollers or disks 60 are provided which will bear on the sheets and when taken off by the stripper 56 will serve to forward the sheets forward along the runway or pathway between guides 58 and 59.
As embodied the folding devices give a longitudinal fold, that is, a fold lengthwise 2f the run of the sheet as it is run into the older.

. comprises a set of folding rollers 64 and 65,
and a folding blade 66, suitably mounted upon swinging arms 67 adapted to fold the sheets into the bite of the folding rollers. The folding rollers are mounted on shafts 61 connected and driven together by gears 62. One of these shafts is driven by a bevel gearing 63 from a shaft 68. A. suitable stop 70 positions the sheets for folding. The folded sheets are delivered into a suitable receptacle, such as 71.
In accordance with one feature of the invention and in connection with the means for folding one length of sheets 'in one direction and the other length of sheets in the other direction, that is, givinga transverse fold to one length of sheets and a longitudinal fold to the other length of sheets, the
sheet receiving or collecting devices are given different relative proportlons with respect to the plate cylinder of the printing press. By this means the plates may be put on; the form cylinder of the printing press either along or around'the form cylinder, and in the one case the sheets will be run to the one folder and previously through the corresponding collecting mechanism, or to the other folder and previously through the collecting mechanism corresponding to such other folder.
It will thus be seen that in each case the fold is properly positioned with respect to the printed pages upon the sheets, and all the other edges of the product are cut, and
there is nonecessity for trimming the edges.
By way of example and to illustrate the operation of the mechanism as shown and described, the cutting cylinders or disks 5, 6 may be regarded as half the diameter of the plate cylinder 72, and the cylinder 35 as likewise being of half the diameter of the plate cylinder 72 and as collecting two successive sheets as cut from the web at, as shown in Fig. 5. In this case the printing plates are arranged with the length of the pagelengthwise of, or along the form cylinder and four pages around the cylinder and.
as many pages along the cylinder, as may be desired. The printed pages would be arranged or located with their length across the Web.
The cutting cylinders in such case would use but one set of cutters and make a out between every second page (considering one side .ofthe Web only) and lengthwise of the pages. The cylinder 41 is shown -of twice the diameter of cylinder 35 and would thus fold off two sheets at every revolution or it could be reduced to one-half its present diameter and fold ofi two sheets at every second revolution.
The cylinder 35 then collects two sheets, each having two pages on each side, and thus brings together the plates or pages once around the plate cylinder and folds them togetheronce continually, bringing them together page after page,or as a signature, with all the edges properly cut. The upper set of forwarding rollers 24, 25 would be used, and the lower set 26, 27 could be used or put out-of operation. I
Further by way. of example and in connection with the description of the operation of the illustrated and described mecha nism, the plates may be regarded as arranged with the length of the page around the form cylinder, instead of lengthwise thereof, as previously described. In each case it has been assumed that there are four plates around the form cylinder. In this case, the four sets of cutters would be used and a transverse cut made in the web between every page and the length of the printed pages extends along thev web. If.

Referring to Fig. 4-.,'the plate cylinder, orrather the development thereof, is indicated by reference numeral 72 I and the plates thereon by 73. The length of the page of the plates is in'the direction of the arrows in Fig. 4:. Such a press is usually a rotary perfecting press. v r

After being printed by a series of plates around the cylinder 72, and with four plates around the form cylinder the two sheets would represent the impression of one complete rotation of the form cylinder 72. The web is cut between every second page, considering one face of the web, as at 76 in Fig. 5, and the sheets :1 and a would be associated or collected upon the cylinder 35. When so associated or collected, the folding blade 39 and jaws 40 would make a fold along the broken lines 77 thus completing the signature.
In Fig. 6 the plate cylinder 72, or the development thereof, is shown with plates 78 thereon, the long way of the page being represented by the-arrows.

The location of .the cuts is. indicated by reference nu meral 79, and the cuts are twice as frequent as in the web shown in Fig; 5. These pages --are collected upon the collecting cylinder 50,

A sheet handling machine including in combination means for cutting sheets of different length from a web, two cylinders adapted to collect thecut sheets, and one adapted to collect a plurality of the cut sheets about its circumference, means for longitudinally folding the sheets received by one cylinder, and means for transversely length and a folder for folding the sheets received by the other cylinder.

A sheet handling machine including in combination means for cutting sheets of difierent length from a Web, a cylinder for receiving sheets of a given length, traveling folding blade and folding jaws for folding the sheets transversely from ofi said cylinder, a second cylinder for receiving sheets of a different length and a folder for longitudinally folding the collected sheets, and
means for forwarding the collected sheets-- from said second cylinder to said last mentioned folder.
36.: A sheet handling machine including in combination means for cutting sheets of difierent length from a web, a collecting cylinderfor collecting sheets of a given length, traveling folding blade, and folding jaws for folding the sheets transversely from off said cylinder, a second collecting cylinderfor collecting sheets of a difierent length and a folder for ing the collected sheets, and means for forwarding the collected sheets from said second collecting cylinder to said last mentioned folder.

A sheet handling machine includingv in combination means for cutting sheets of different length from a web, inder for collecting sheets of a given length, a folding blade mounted on said cylinder and rotating folding jaws cooperating therewith for folding from, off said cylinder, a second collecting cvlinder for collecting sheets of a different longitudinally folding the collected sheets, warding the collected sheets fro-m said sec- 0nd collecting cylinder to said last mentioned folder. A sheet handling machine including in combination means for cutting from a Web either single or double length sheets, means for directingthe unfolded sheets of one length to folding means and means for collecting the sheets of another length and delivering the collected sheets unfolded to folding means to be folded, one folding mechanism folding transversely of the sheet and the other folding mechanism folding longitudinally of the sheet.
