This invention relates to a sheet perforating machine for producing musical records adapted to be used in connection with mechanical piano or organ players and devices, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a simple organization of electrically controlled elements which positively and automatically operate to-accurately orv exactly duplicate apreliminarily' prepared record in an expeditious manner Without requiring any special attention on the part of an operator to effect the result sought, and thereby materially reduce the cost of manufacture of .this class of machines and of perforated mechanical records.
The machine` embodying the features of the invention has been particularly devised for producing musical records of the perforated sheet type ordinarily rolled upon spools or anlogous devices -for ready application to a mechanicalpiano or organ player, but it will be understood that the same mechanism may be-used for reproducing any other porforated sheet, such-as that used inconnection with Jacquard looms and in type machines and the like.
The improved machine embodies a gang or plurality of lever punches which .are individually-'operated or are automatically selected in accordance with the openings in the preliminarily prepared record or pattern by the several mechanisms embodied in. the macl1ine. i v
'-The machine also involves means for causing vthe Isheet being-perforated to move in consonance with or at the same rate of speed asthe preliminarily prepared record or pattern, and, furthermore, the variation'in the length or size of vthe openings in the pattern record will beeffectively carried out in the reproduction fsheet by causing the punch, levers automatically selected to operate to have vibrations imparted thereto in order to continuously-cut openings in the reproduction sheet exactly corresponding in length to the openings inthe pattern '.record.

are disposed' in longitudinal aline'mentto form a die4 opening 24, each pair of plates being separated by a steel. partition plate 25 extending the full width of the pocketor channel 18 and coperating with the pairs of plates 22 to complete the several dies 20. The die'openings 24 produced by the plates 22 and 25 are preferably of rectangular form, but it will be understood that this shape may be-varied at will by correspondingly changing the edges of thedies 'around the openings. The diesas composed of the pairs of plates 22 and the plates 25 ar held 1n positive positions in the pocket or chanvnel 18 by rods 26 adapted to be suitably secured at their ends in the side portions of the frames and' readily removable to take out and repair or replace any of the die members. The plates 25 will also have their upper edges slightly convex so as to accurately coincide with the upper edges of the plates 22, and when all of the die 'inembers are assembled and ysecured in the pocket or channel 18 a continuous convex ridge-will be provided'in the bed or table 10 over which the sheet, as at S', from the.

A iixed fulcrum rod 27 is held between uprights 28 rising, from intermediate portions of the arms 8, and. on this'fulcrum rod an 'insulating bushing 'or sleeve 29 is mounted. Punch levers '30 are suspended from the rod 27 and have intermediate ap.-` ertured enlargements 31k in which the bushing 29 is fitted, there being the same mimber of levers 30 as there are female dies in the pocket or channel 18; and each lever o has a depending punch terminal 32 at its front extremity which is normally held over one of the openings 24 of the dies 20. The levers 30 extend rearwardly from therod 27 and are preferably provided with upturned rear ends 33 to which springs 34 are attached and also secured to a rod or analogous device 35 extendingV across and fastened to the uprights 7 at the rear of the Y the rear portions of the` arms 8, an insulatingbushing 40 being interposed between the lever head. 37 and the rod 39. The head 37 of the lever 38 has an upwardly extendingcontact projection 41 which 'rises slightly above the planes of the upper edges of the arms 8 to coperate with thecontact projection 36 of the rear portion of the lever 30 thereover.
There are as many followers or defining levers 38 used as there are levers 3 0, and the bushing 40 extends fully over the rod 39 and insulates all of the said levers 38. The levers 38 have lower rearwardly projecting contact ends or fingers 42, each lever being provided with a single projection or lfinger, and engaging each lever 38 also is a spring 43 resting against a fiber or insulating block or strip 44 held by a cross-bar 45 secured to the arms 8. The springs 43 operate to maintain the yfollowers or defining levers 38 in a normally yielding position, but the springs 43 are only of such resilient tension as to insure the performance of contact function and'engagement of the fingers 42 with parts disposed for-coperation therewith. The cam roller 100 is operated'through' the medium of a handle or gri -nected thereto, and when the sald yroller ismoved inwardly the reproduction sheet S, which is primarily passed between the outer edges of the bars 93 and the inner beveled edge of the cutter bar 98, is forced against the bars 93 and severed and when the cam roller 100 is released the springs 97 force the cutter bar 98 outwardly and at the same time the roller 100 is rotated in a reverse direction until the cutter bar engages the shoulder 104 when the parts of this cutting mechanism will bein normal position. The cutting mechanism as a whole as just'described is secured through the medium of ears or lugsl06 on the ends of the bars 93 to opposite brace members or arms 107 of the frame at a point slightly below the front guide roller 13.
To the upper ends of the uprights 7 above the arms 8 and the punch levers 30 a magnet carrying frame 108 is movably mounted and comprises opposite side bars 109 and a plurality of cross-bars 1,10, the rear ends of the side bars 109 being fulcrumed or hinged to the upper endsof the uprights 7 and having their front ends detachably secured by screw-bolts or analogous devices 111 inserted therethrough into upstanding supports 112 which are each formed with a` socket 113 having a suitable insulation 114 mounted therein. By removing the screwbolts 111 the frame 108 together with the` supports have electromgnets 116 suspended therefrom, oney magnet from each support. An electromagnet'v is yheld over the upper edge of each punch lever 30 and'has its pole exposed to the upper edge of its correspond-h ing lever. It will be seen that all of the magnets 1.16 are arranged in rear of the fulcrum rod 27 of'the evers 30, and hence when the'rear portion ,of any one of the levers'is drawn upwardly by its magnet the front portion of the same lever will be forced downwardly and the punch extremities ,32 thereof will be caused to punch the sheetl punch extremity andl S fed between the said the die beneath.
` As more vclearly shown by Fig. 8,-the core of the magnet is projected as a whole at the upper end of each magnet, and an armature 1'17 is normally in engagement with the upper end of the core or pole of'eachnmagnet and is carried-by a pivoted or hinged arm 118 extending from the adjacent portion of the cross-bar '110 which 'supports the magnet.
The core 119 of each magnet is also tubular and has an insulation 120 therein which is likewise tubular, and through the tubular insulation a small rod'121 rises from the upper edge of the adjacent lever 30 and extends upwardly to and engages an insulation 1 22 on thek armature 117. The rod 121 may be secured either to the lever 30 or to the insulation 122, and the latter insula-l tion will extend over onl a portion of the armature so as to avoidy interfering with the normal metal contact between the armature 117 and the upper end of the core of the magnet.4 The rod121 coperating with each punch lever 30'constitutes a circuit breaker and will break the circuit of the magnet ting each finger 42 to pass therethroughvand engage its corresponding head. Each lever 30 will continue to punch or vibrate so long as its corresponding follower or defining lever 38 has its finger 42 in engagement with its corresponding head 46, and by this means short and longer openings will be formed in iance with 'they' openin yS. 'WhenV the unper orated portions of the pattern sheet QS" move in between the several ,fingers 42 and thev heads 46, the electrical circuit will be broken' by reason of' the interpositionof a. non-conducting material between'- the'said fingers and'head, and in order to effect anf' elevation of the rear portions vof the levers y it will be understood thatv the magnets 116 ,will 'bel strong enough to overcome any resisting tendency that may beset upbyy the contact projections 36 and 41 and also overcomehe resistance vof the springs 34. Furthermore, care will be taken to so proportionA the upper edges of the levers andthe poles of their corresponding magnets 116 as to insure that each magnet will influence only the lever with which it is intended to coperate and thereby avoid magneticvinterference and the operation of levers that should not be actuated.
VThe' motor'83 Awill be supplied with current from any suitable. line source, and the magnets will be `energized from a battery B held in a suitable inclosure 123 secured to the frame 5. The poles of the battery are connected by `wires v124 and 125 to a .switch 126- inthe manner shown by Fig.
1, and all of. the. Shanks 47 are connected by' a Wire 126 with one` ofthe switch members, the several shanksv 47 having short lengths of wire running therefrom to a .main wire -which will'constitu'te a conductor for all vof the vsh'anks collectively 4relatively to the switch member. The remaining member'of the vswitch 1261is connected by a wire or conductor 127 to the frame 108., and the latter is in turn connected by wires 127 to the armatures 117, it being understood that these armatures will be suitably insulated' will be insulated by the interposition of any suitable insulating means at its pivot or hinge connections relatively to the uprights 7 and as indicated at 130..'
As shown by Fig. 5, the front or receiving roller 69y will be providedV with means for readily .atta-ching the reproduction sheet thereto and for disconnecting said sheet for the purpose of transferring it to another roller. The core of the roller 69 coma been completel and the one end of thereproduction sheet inserted therethrough, and then the heads are turned so as to cause the one tube 132 l to rotate on the other tube 131 and clamp the paper between the tubes and at the same time partially roll the paper around'the core, the rotation yofone tube `011 the other being effected when the ,tubes are pushed inwardly to a distance approximately equal to the width of the sheet, and when the paper has been thus secured, the .roller 69 1s` then connected to -the gear 70- which is arranged in all respects similar to the gear shown inconnection with the roller 52, as shown by Fig. 3,. and hereinbefore explained. After the sheet reproduced has roller 69 or su sequent to the severance of the completed reproduced sheet, vthe heads and tubes of .this roller may ,be readily drawn apart fromthe opposite ends 'of the rolled reproduced sheet and the roller again reset in the machine andhave the extremity wound on'the core of the i of the-sheet S again secured thereto in the same manner for the formation of a further reproduction of the pattern sheet. e

'It will'y also be understood that the same` 'form of roller may be adopted at any other point in the machine where found desirable, as for instance the roller 52 may be similarly con- .structed so as to expedite-the detachment of the rolled pattern sheet therefrom. lFurthermore, each of the rollers may be provided with means for preventing the sheets from running slack thereon and especially the main feed roller 117, and any of the approved devices for this purpose may be .adopted at will. It willl also bel-understood that changes in the proportions, dimensions and minor details may be varied within the scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a machine of the class described, a plurality of oscillating punch levers and corresponding dies, a pattern sheet, electric circuit Fmaking and breaking devicesin part carried, by the punch levers and between which the pattern sheet has movement, a
part of said devices coperating directly.
with the levers to make and break the-circuit relatively to the leversthe pattern sheet having the openings therein formed in a reproducing sheet which is fed between the punch levers and dies, the two sheets simultaneously moving at the same rate of speed, magnetic means attractively coperating with portions of the punching levers to effect an oscillation of the latter, and a source of electrical generation connected to a portion of said circuit making Yand breaking devices and the magnetic means. y
2. InY a machine of the class described, a
plurality of oscillating punch levers and corresponding dies, the levers having'` contact projections, a `pattern sheet, `ra guide .over
which the pattern sheet moves and composed of a plurality of conductingheads, a plurality of conducting followers having means for movably engaging the said heads and having direct engagement with said contact projections of the punch levers, the pattern and reproducing sheets respectively having the same rate of movement simultaneously imparted thereto with relation to the pattern guide andthe punching levers and dies, and
" electrical means connected to the said heads and also controlling the voscillation of the punch levers to form the same openings in a reproducing sheet in regular sequence as the openings in the pattern sheet.

In a machine of the class described, a plurality .of punch levers and dies, the levers having contactprojections at their rear portions, a pattern sheet, circuit making and breaking devices between which the pattern sheet has movement, electrically controlled devices in part engaging said contact projections of the levers for oscillating the punch levers, and electrical connections forl and between the electrically controlled devices and the circuit makin;lr and breaking devices for causing the punch levers to operate to form the same character of openings as embodied in the pattern sheet relatively to a reproduction sheet, the pattern sheet and' the reproducing lsheet simultaneouslyr moving at the same rate of speed.
4. In a machine of the class described, a
`plurality of intermediately fulcrumed oscillating punch levers having means attached to their rear extremities for returning them to normal position and also provided with contact projections at their rear extremities, dies corresponding in number to and with which the punch levers coperate, a movable pattern sheet having perforations, and electrical devices includingmeans normally engaging thecontact projections of the levers for automatically operating the said levers to reproduce the perforations of the pattern `'6. In a machine of the class described, a plurality of oscillating punch levers and corresponding dies, a movable pattern sheet having perforatio'ns, electrically controlled devices includingcircuit making and breakving means above and below and normally engagmg the levers and circuits for operat-V `lng the levers, perforations ofthe pattern sheet engaging a portion of the electrically controlled devices'and'by its movement governmg the make and break of the electrical circuits to actuate the levers to reproduce the perforations of the other sheet.

In a machine of the class described, a plurality of oscillating punch levers and corresponding dies, electrical devices above and below the levers and embodying circuitmaking and breaking means for roperating-the levers, means tending to .return the oscillating levers to normal position, and a movable pattern sheet having perforations operating the levers through the electrical devices to reproduce the other sheet.

In a machine of th'e class described, a plurality 'of oscillating punch levers and pattern sheet in ancorresponding dies, electrical devices and perforations thereof in ancircuits for operating the levers including I means arranged above and actuated by the levers for breaking the circuits, followers movably mounted below the levers and nor# mally having contact with the latter, and a movable pattern sheet having perforations and also Voperating with a portion of said followers to make and break thecircuits to primarily actuate the levers to reproduce the perforations thereof in exactly the same positions in another sheet, both the reproducing sheet and pattern sheet. being of the same dimensions and simultaneously moved at the same rate of speed.
f 10. In a machine of the class described, a
plurality of oscillating punch levers and corresponding dies, a' series of electrical devices lncludmg electrlcal circuits and mag- `nets disposed over portions of the levers and a plurality of punch levers and corresponding dies, a series of magnets disposed over the levers and having movable members engaging the levers to break the circuits of the magnets, and a movable pattern sheet having perforations and operating to cause"V the magnets of the levers to be alternately energized and denergized to 'reproduce the perforations thereof in anotherv sheet.
12.` In a machine of the class described, a.
plurality of oscillating punch levers and corresponding dies controlling magnets for the levers having means engaging the latter for breaking the circuits of the magnets,
means for returning the levers to normal position, and a movable pattern sheet for alternately energizing and denergizing the magnets and causing the levers to reproduce the pattern sheet in another sheet.
13.. In a machine of the class described,
a. plurality of intermediately fulcr'umed' punch levers and corresponding dies, controlling magnets coperating with the rear portions of the levers, the magnets having means always in engagement with the levers for breaking the circuits of the magnets by the upward movements of the levers, followers having normal contact with A the levers, insulated contact heads coperating with the followers, and a movable kpattern sheet movable between the followers and contact heads and having perforations and operating to alternately energize and denergize the magnets to cause the levers v to reproduce the perforations of the pattern sheet inv another sheet.
14. In a machine of the class described,
plurality of'punch levers and corresponding dies, controlling magnets havmg circuity breakers in part engaging the levers, circuit *making devices connected to the magnets,
and' a movable pattern sheet having perforations passmg between the circuit ymakingdevices and operating to alternately'energize and denergize the magnets to cause the levers to reproduce the perforations of the pattern sheet in another sheet.
15.-In a machine of the class described, a plurality of punchlevers and corresponding dies, electrical devicesin part coperating with the levers and including circuits and a source of electrical supply, said devices operating in alternation with respect to .opposite portions of the levers to make and break the circuits, and a movable pattern sheet also vcoperating with portions of the electrical devices and operating to alter-l nately energize andk denergize a portionv of.
said devices to cause the levers to reproduce the pattern sheet vin another sheet.

In a machine'of thel class described, a. plurality of oscillating punch levers and vcorresponding dies, means for maintaining the punch' levers in normal position, av pattern sheet havingjperforations, magnetic devices disposed 'over and operating the punch levers, a `guide over which the pattern sheet .moves and composed of a plurality of conductingheads electrically connected to said magnetic devices, and a plurality of conductingfollowers normally 1n contact with the lower portions of the levers and having free 'extremities for engaging the perforations of the pattern sheet and said heads, the

. 2().` In a machine of the class described', va .frame embodying a front table with a trans` versel-y extending die `pocket therein, a pluralitylof dies mounted in the said pocket and between the winding rolls for the reproduccomprising pairs of plates with upper con-` vex edges extending only partially across the width of the pocket to provide openings between their inneredges and having partition plates alternately associated therewith, a plurality of punch levers coperating with the dies, a perforated pattern sheet, and means operated by the perforated pattern sheet to actuate the punch levers to form the perforations of the pattern sheet in a reproducing sheet.

In a machine of the class described, a frame having a table, a pluralityT of dies carried by the table, a plurality of punch levers coperating with said dies, a pattern sheet having perforations and mounted on 'a carrying roll, means for operating the punch Y sheet to actuate the punch levers to form v perforations in a reproducing sheet corre-l sponding` to those of the pattern sheet, and winding rolls for the pattern sheet and a reproducing sheet, eachof said rolls having a headand a tubular'member with a longitudinal slot therein, the tubular members of the rolls being adapted to telescope and also to rotate with relation to each other for the purpose of securmg and releasing the sheets in engagement therewith.
24. In a machine ofthe class described, a,
frame having a table, punch levers and dies coperating with the said sheet, a Winding roll 'for a sheet adapted to` move over the table, said Winding roll being removably mounted in the frame and comprising heads and .telescopic tubular sections with slots therein, a gear `means with which one of the heads 1s separably associated, and mechamsm for operating the said parts including the gear means.

In a machine of the class described, a plurality of punch levers and corresponding dies, a pattern sheet having perforations and engaging a carrying and Winding roll, means controlled by' the pattern sheet for operating the levers, a winding roll for a reproducing sheet, 'and mechanism for uniformlv operating the said Winding rolls and embodying a transversely shiftable motor directly operating in connection with the gear means for varying the speed of the winding rolls.

In a machine of the class described, a frame having a table, sheet engaging mechanism,`a winding roll for a sheet, and a cutting attachment through which a sheet is adapted to move and. comprising guides with a cam head rotatably mounted therein andda sliding'cutting blade actuated by said hea 27.. plurality of punch levers and corresponding dies, a table, a pattern sheet engaging a carrying roll, windingr rolls for the pattern sheet and for a reproducing sheet, means operative by the pattern sheet for actuating the punch levers, and mechanism engaging the said winding rolls and comprising adjustable gear devices, a motor directly operating with said gear devices, guide means on which the said motor is movably mounted, and a screw-rod and gearing for manually shifting the motor to vary the speed of the winding rolls.
