To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HALFDAN NoRoM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bloomeld, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, andto characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
rlhis invention has reference, generally, to improvements in valves; and, the present invention relates, more particularly, to a novel valve for use with steam, water, air or gases, which is of such construction that under normal conditions, that is when the valve is closed, the outlet of the valve-casing is completely shut-oil' from the inlet of the valve-casing, or from the pressure in the inlet-side of the valve, but when partially operated, the outlet-side is'slightly opened to the inlet-side of the valve, so as to gradually equalize the pressure, and when iinally and completely operated, a full openingrelation of the outlet-side of the valve is had with the inlet-side of the valve.
The present invention, therefore, has for its principal object to provide a novel and simply constructed, as well as an effectively operating valve ot the general character hereinafter set forth and for the purposes herein above stated.
Other objects of the present invention not at this time more particularly enumerated will be clearly understood from the followingdetailed description of the said invention.
With the various objects of the present invention in view, the invention consists, primarily, in the novel valve of the general character hereinafter more fully set forth; and, the invention consists, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations ot' the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, all of which will be more t'ully described in the following specilication, and then finallv embodied in the clauses of the claim which are appended to and which torni an essential part of the said specification., v

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which lFigure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section of a valve made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, said view showing the normal initial position of the closing member or gate, and the means for operating the same, when the outlet-side of the valveis completely shut oii'1 from the inlet-side of the valve. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the valve, said section being taken on line 2-2 in said Fig. 1, logking in the direction of the arrow x, and the upper portion of the valve being partly shown in elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section of the valve, said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 1, looking in a downward direction; Fig. t is a similar section of the valve, said section being taken on line Ll-fl in said Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a detail vertical section, taken on line 5 5 in said Fig. 1. The said member 42 is also provided with a hole or opening 44 forming a spindle or pin-receiving portion for the purposes to be presently set forth. Similarly extending horizontally from the lower portion of the said arcshaped web 39, forming the closing member or gate, is another member 45, said member being provided upon its lower surface with ardownwardly extending pivot-stud or lug, as 46, which extends into and through the centrally disposed opening 12 of the disk or plate 11, and into the socket-like part 9 of the receiving portion 7, of the main valvecasing or shell 2, substantially as illustrated in the several figures of the drawings. The said member 45, as will be seen from an inspection of Figs. 4, 9 and 13, is cut away, as at 47, and is provided with a pair of horns or stop-projecticnsv48 and 49, adapted to be brought into arresting engagement with the previously-mentioned stop-pin or stud, substantially as shown and for theV purposes lto be hereinafter more fully described. The
said member 45 is also provided with a hole or opening 50, 1n alinement with the hole or lopening 44 in the member 42, and mounted in the said holes or openings 44 and 50 are the respective end-portions of a pin or spindle 51. This pin or spindle 51 has suitably mounted thereon, in a fixed position, a sleeve or collar 52, resting upon the upper surface of the said lower member 45, so that the lower end-portion of the said pin or spindle 51 extends into and through the opening 13 of the disk or plate 11, and into the socketlike part 10 of the receiving portion 7 of the main valve-casing or shell 2, as shown. Encircling that portion of the spindle or pin 51, between the lower surface of said upper member 42 and the said fixed sleeve or collar 52 is a coiled spring 53, the purpose of which is to provide a spring-controlled stop for locking the valve-gate 39 in its closed relation, as will be self-evident, and at one side of the hole or opening 13 in the disk or plate 11, the bounding surfaceportion of said disk or plate 11 is inclined or cut away, as at 54, see Fig. 6 of the drawings, and the purpose of which will be presently fully set forth.
Having in the foregoing described the general construction and arrangement of the several devices and parts comprising the valve-construction, I will now briefly set forth the manner of working the valve and the operations of its parts for the purposes stated in the introduction of this specification.
VVhen the several devices and parts of the valve are in the respective positions indicated in Figs. 1 to 5 inclusive, then the arcshaped -webor closing gate 39 completely shuts off the inlet-side from the outlet-side of the valve. As socn, however, as the spindle or stem 23 receives its initial rotary moticn, from right to left, then the screwthreaded portion 36 of said stem o'r spindle will cause an upward movement of the said arc-shaped web or gate 39 from its closing position shown in Fig. 1 to its vertically raised position indicated in Fig. 6 of the drawings, the lower end-portion of the spindle or pin 51, while still extending into the receiving socket-like part 10, preventing any rotary or swinging action of the said arcshaped web or closing gate 39, as will be clearly eviden-t. The upward movement of the said web or gate 39, causes it to become unseated from the seat-portions within the main shell or casing 2, so that the pressure within the valve-casing or shell 2 will beco-me equalized upcn beth sides of the raised web or gate 39. The further rotary motion of the valve-stem or spindle 23, from right to left, brings the lower end-portion of the pin or spindle 51 into the opening 13 in the disk or plate 11, and the end-portion of the pin or spindle 51 will ride up the inclined surface 54, and there being no further oppositicn to a swinging movement of the pin or spindle 51, about the pivot-stud or lug 46 as a center, the stud or projection 37 of the stem or spindle 23 at the same time having been moved into contact with an extension or post 56 with which the upper member 42 is provided, as clearly shown in Figs. 11 and 12 of the drawings, whereby the active cooperation of the screw-portion 36 with the member 44 being arrested, and the said web or gate 39 is swung around into its entirely opened poisticn indicated in Figs. 11V and 13 of the drawings, thereby providing an unobstructed full passage-way between the inlet-side andthe outlet-side of the valve, as will be clearly understood. The previously-menticned stop-projections or horns 48 and 49 being respectively brought into contact with the stop-pin or stud 15, arrest the said closing web or gate 39 in either its fully opened or fully closed positions.
In turning the valve-stem or spindle 23 from left to right, the operations are reversed, the spring 53, as soon as the spindle or pin 51 is again moved above the register-- ing openings 13 and 10, causing the lower end-portion of said spindle or pin 51 to be again forced into locked engagement with said openings, so that the closing web or gate 39 is positively retained in its closed relation with the outlet-end of the valve, as will be clearly understood.
Of course I am fully aware that some changes may be made in the general arrangements and combinations of the several devices and parts, as well as in the details of the construction of the said parts, without departing from the scope of the presentinvention asset Yforth in the'fore- 'goingspecificatiom and as defined in the "clauses of the `claim which are `appended v'to lthe said specification. `Hence7 I do not limit the present invention to the exact arrangements and combinations of: the several 'devices and parts as described in the said specification, nor do confine myself to the exact details of the constructionof the said'parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.V

A. valve comprising a main valve-casing formed with an inlet member and an outlet member, and with a downwardly extending receiving portion provided with a pair of socket-like parts and a seating portion, a disk seated upon said seating portion, said disk being provided with a pair of openings in registration with said socketlike parts, a valve-stem rotatably mounted in said valve-casing, said stem being provided with a screw-threaded portion, a vertically disposed closing gate within-said valve-casing normally located in front ot said outlet member so as to fully close the same, an upper horizontally disposed member extending from said gate, said member being provided with a screw-threaded hole with which the screw-threaded portion oit' said valve-stem cooperates for primarily raising said gate directly in its position in front of said outlet member and secondarily rotating said raised gate from in front of said outlet member, a lower horizontally disposed member extending from said gate, a pivot-stud extending downwardly from said lower horizontally disposed member, said pivct-stud extending through one of the openings in said disk and into one of the socket-like portions in the downwardly extending receiving portion ot the valvecasing, said upper horizontally disposed member being provided with an opening, said opening being in alinement with the other opening in said disk and the other socket-like portion in the downwardly extending receiving portion ot the valve-casing, and a spring-controlled lock-pin slidably mounted in said alined last-mentioned openings and the said last-mentioned socketlike portion.

A valve comprising a main valve-casing formed with an inlet member and an outletl member, and with a downwardly extending receiving portion provided with a pair of socket-like parts and a seating portion. a disk seated upon said seating portion, said disk being provided with a pair ot openings in registration with said socketlige parts, a valve-stem rotatably mounted in said valve-casing, said stem being provided with a screw-threaded portion, a vertically disposed closing gate within said valve-casing normally located in front of said outlet member so as to fully close the same, an upper horizontally disposed member extending from said gate, said member being provided with a screw-threaded hole with which the screw-threaded portion of said valve-stein cooperates for primarily raising said gate directly in its position in front ot' said outlet member and secondarily rotating said raised gate from in front of said outlet member, a lower horizontally disposed member extending from said gate, a pivot-stud extending downwardly from said lower horizontally disposed member, said pivot-stud extending through one of the openings in said disk and into one of the socket-like portions in the downwardly extending receiving portion of the valvecasing, said upper horizontally disposed member being provided with an opening, said opening being in alinement with the other opening in said disk and the other socket-like portion in the downwardly extending receiving portion orn the valve-casing, a spring-controlled lock-pin slidably mounted in said alined last-mentioned openings and the said last-mentioned socket-like portion, and a stop-lug connected with said downwardly extending receiving portion of the valve-casing with which portions of the lower horizontally disposed member is adapted to be brought into engagement to limit the rotary movement of said gate.

A valve comprisingA a main valvecasing formed with an inlet member and an outlet member, and with a downwardly extending receiving portion provided with a pair of socket-like parts and a seating portion, a disk seated upon said seating portion, said disk being provided with a pair ot' openings in registration with said socketlike parts, a valve-stem rotatably mounted in said valve-casing, said stem being provided with a screw-threaded portion, and a projection extending laterally from said valve-stem, a vertically disposed closing gate within said valve-casing normally located in front of said outlet member so as to fully close the same, an upper horizontally disposed member extending from said gate, said member being provided with a screw-threaded hole with which the screwthreaded portion of said valve-stem coperates for primarily raising said gate directly in its position in front of said outlet member, and a post extending upwardly from said horizontally disposed member with which the projection of said valvestem is adapted to be brought into engagement for rotating said raised gate away from in iront of said outlet member, a lower horizontally disposed member extending trem said gate, va pivot-stud extending downwardly from said lower horisaid disk and into one' of the socketdike portions in the downwardly extending receiving portion of the valve-casing, said upper horizontally disposed member vbeing provided with an opening, said opening being in alinement with the other opening in said disk and the" othervsocket-like portion in the downwardly extending receiving portion of the valve-casing, and a spring-controlled lock-pin slidably mounted in 'said -alined last-mentioned openings and the'said last-mentioned socket-like portion.
