TELEGRAPH-TRANSMITTER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLAYTON BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Centralia, in the county of Boone, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telegraph-Transmittersz and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a telegraph transmitter.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a transmitter in which a circuit is made and broken a plurality of times upon one manual actuation of the dot lever to produce a series of dots used in the Morse code.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that it will be easily operated and will lessen the work of the operator.
WVith these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings: Figure 1 is a plan view of my device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a similar view looking at the opposite side of the device. Fig. 4 is an end elevation. Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a section on line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. 7 is a section on line 77 of Fig. 1. Fig. 8 is a fragmental detail of the compound lever.
Referring to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views :In the embodiment of my invention shown in the drawing, I have provided a metallic base 1 which is supported by suitable rubber legs 2. Secured to the base 1 by means of screws 3 is a spring holder 4 to which is attached, by means of a bolt 5, a vibrator spring 6 to the end of which is attached a vibrator 7 which is in the form of a rod and has a weight 8 adjustably mounted thereon, which weight may be held in any of its adjusted positions by a set screw 9. The adjustment of this weight will determine the rate of vibration of the vibrator 7 and consequently the frequency of the dots as will be later Specification of Letters Patent.

A limiting post 10 for the vibrator is mounted on the base 1 adjacent the end of the vibrator and has an adjustable set screw 11 mounted therein on which set screw a lock nut 12 is mounted. The end of the set screw 11 is provided with a point 13 of insulating material with which point the vibrator 7 contacts. The vibrator 7, the spring 6 and the holder 4 are in electrical communication with the base 1. Mounted on the base 1 and insulated therefrom is a post 14 which has a set screw 15 adjustably mounted therein on which set screw is a lock nut 16 so that the set screw may be held in its adjusted positions. Secured to the post 14 and insulated from the base 1 is a spring 17 having a contact point 18 on the end thereof which is adapted to engage the contact point 19 on the vibrator 7. The spring 17 includes a horizontally disposed U-shaped portion and a vertically extending shank. The end of the screw 15 bears against the horizontal portion of the spring so that upon the adjustment of the screw the spring will be moved so that the contact point 18 will be adjusted with relation to the contact point 19 on the vibrator 7. Mounted on the base 1 is a binding post 20 in electrical communication with the base and a second binding post 21 insulated from the base. Extending from the binding post 21 to the post 14 is a bus bar 22 which is insulated from the base. The binding posts 20 and 21 are adapted to receive the ends of the line wires in the usual manner. Thus when the vibrator 7 is moved by the spring 6 so that the contacts 18 and 19 will engage each other a circuit will be set up from one line wire to the post 21, through the bus bar 22 to the post 14, through the springs 17 to the contact 18, to the contact 19, through the vibrator 7 and spring 6 to the holder 4, through the base 1 to the binding post 20 and thence to the other line wire.
In order that the engagement of the con tacts 18 and 19 may be controlled, I have provided a vibrator releasing lever 23 which is pivoted on a pintle 24, which pintle is mounted in a bearing 25 on the base and in an adjustable bearing 26 mounted on a bracket 27. The lever 23 is provided with an arm 28 such as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing which is adapted to engage the weight 8 upon the vibrator 7 and when in engagement with the said weight willprevent the movement of the vibratorf This arm 28 is normally held in engagement'with the weight 8 by a coil spring 29 whichis attached to a set screw 30, which set screw is adjustably mounted on a post 31 and held in its adjusted position by a lock nut 32. The movement of the lever 23 away from the vibrator is limited by a set screw 33 which is adapted to contact with the lever, is adjustably mounted in a post 34 and held in its adjusted position by a lock nut 35. In order that this lever 23 may be actuated I have pivoted a second-lever-36 on thepintle 24 which overlies the lever 23 and has a stop member-37 secured to one face thereof, which stop member extends downwardly into contact with-the adjacent face'ofthe lever 23. Extending from this stop member 37 is a pin 38 whichprojectsthrough a hole in the lever 23 and has ainut 39 on the end thereof. Interposed between this nut 39 and the lever 23 is an expansion spring 40 which maintains thestop member 37, normally,-in contact withthe lever 23. :Secured to the other end of the lever 36 is a handle 41 and on the opposite it'aceotthe lever .36 is a knob 42, which handle and knob are made of suitable insulating naterial .such as hard rubber. V
I Secured to the base 1 andinsulatedth'erefrom is a post 43 which has acontact member 44 adjustably mounted thereon, which contact member is adapted to engage an alined contact 45 on the-end ofthe lever 36. Extending from the post 14 to thepost 43 is a bus bar 46 which is insulated fromthe base 1. Secured to the post 43 and extending outwardly therefrom in slight spaced relation to the base 1 is a clip 47. Pivoted to the base at 48 is a switch 49 which has a free end adapted to be forced between the clip 47 and the base 1 to complete the ci-rcuit when the device is not in use as will become apparent.
In using the device, when it is desired to send a series of dots it will only be necessary for the operator to engage the handle 41 and move the same in one direction at this time the stop member 37 on the lever 36, which lever, I will designate asthe dash lever for the sake of convenience, will engage the vibrator releasing lever 23 and theselevers 36 and 23 will be moved together against thetension of the spring 29 so that the arm 28 will disengage the weight 8. Upon the disengagement of the weight 8 the vibrator 7 will move, the spring 6 having previously held the vibrator under tension. During this movement'of thevibrator 7 the contact 19 thereon will intermittently engage the contact 18 on the spring 17 and the circuit previously described will be set up. It will only be necessary for the operatorto maintain the pressureupon thehandie l until the number of times the contacts 18 and 19 haveengaged each other is sufficientto produce the required number of dots. WVhen this has taken place the handle 41 may be released-and the spring 2 9 will move the levers 23 and 36 into their initial positionsand the arm 28 into contact with engagementof-the contacts 18 and 19. It will thus be seen that to produce the required number otdots-onlyone movement of the operators hand is necessary since, whenthe weight 8 is'released, the vibrator 7 will be caused to move to intermittently close the line circuit.
l/Vhen it is desired to send a dash it is only necessaryifor the operatorto apply force to the-knob 42 and move the same in a direction opposite to that in which-the handle 41 is moved. vAtthis time thedash'lever 36 will be swung toward the post 43 until the contact 45 thereon engages the contact 44 on the post. This movement of the lever 36 will take place against the action of, the spring 40,'which spring will be compressed to allow thelever 36to moveindependently of the lever 23. Force must be applied to the knob 42 for only such time as is necessary to produce one dash and when the knob is relieved ofthe pressure the spring40 will return the lever 36 to its initial position overlying the lever 23. hen the contacts 44 and 45 engage, the circuit will pass from the post 21 through the-bus bars 22 and 46 to the ,post 43, through the lever 36 to the base 1, through the base .1 to the binding post 20 through thezline wire to the binding post 21.
When the instrument is not in use the circuit may be'completed-by moving the switch 49 so that it'contacts with the clip 47 and thus the circuit will follow the last described circuit to the post 43 and thence through theswitch to the base.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided a telegraph transmitter which is of such construction that a number of dots may be sent with but one manual operation. Specifically I have provided a vibrator which will close the circuit intermittently as many times as is desired by the operator to transmit dots.
While I have illustrated and described a particular embodiment of my invention, I
have merely done so for the sake of convenlence and I do not wish to be limited toy that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the details of construction thereof without in any Way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the'scopeof the appended claims.
WVhat I claim is 1. In a telegraph transmitter, the combi nation with .a. vibrator, of a lever having van arm thereon adapted to engage the vibrator, a second lever mounted on the pivot of the first lever and movable relative thereto, means on the second lever for engaging the first lever to cause the movement of the first lever when the second lever is moved in one direction and resilient means for opposing the movement of the second lever independently of the first lever in the other direction.
2. In a telegraph transmitter, the combination with a vibrator, of a lever for controlling the movement of the same, a second lever mounted on the pivot of the first lever and movable independently thereof, the said levers being movable together to release the vibrator and means for limiting the independent movement of the second lever With relation to the first lever.
3. In a telegraph transmitter, the combination with a vibrator, of a lever for controlling the same, a second lever mounted on the pivot of the first lever and movable independently thereof, means on the second lever for engaging the first lever to cause the movement of the latter in one direction and resilient means for opposing the independent movement of the second lever, and resilient means adapted to coact with the first mentioned resilient means to move the levers together to arrest the movement of the vibrator.
