More specifically stated my invention relates to that class of car and dooroperatingand latching mechanism which is illustrated, described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 791,348, granted May 30th,
1905 to myself and John' F. Streib and United States Letters Patent No. 833,402, granted October 16th. 1906 to me. In the mechanism of both of these patents, chain means is employed for raising the doors, and a creeping shaft is emplo ed for first winding said chain means an then latching the doors in raised position directly on the shaft and not through the medium of the chain means, to relieve the chain means from load strains. It is however to be understood that l my invention may be applied to bottom dump cars' haying door operating mechanism of other* types than that above referred to, and which are provided with door operating shafts extending longitudinally of the car and at or near the vertical plane of the car sides.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, l indicates the center sill of the car which may be of any suitable form. such as box girder or I beam, but preferably of the modified A-shape illustrated in Fig. '2 of the drawings. This form of center sill is fully illustrated, described and claimed in United States Letters Patent No. 833,402, granted to me October 16th, 1906, and hence it is unnecessary to describe it 1n further detail in this specification. A

Within the scope of my invention, as defined in the claims, they construction of the parts may be modified in many ways by the skilled mechanic, since, what I claim is 1.- In a railway car, a metallic side stake having a substantially rvertical upper portion, an enlarged inwardly sloping intermediate portion and an enlarged lower portion.

In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a side will, a transversely extending member secured to said center sill and terminating within the `vertical plane'of said side wall, a vertically disposed;` member secured to said side wall and transverse member, said member having a substantially vertical upper portion and an enlarged lower portion and a strengthening member secured to said vertically disposed member.
28. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill. of a side wall having vertical and' inclined portions, transversely extending members secured to said center sill,
said transverse members terminating within the vertical plane of said side wall, and stakes secured to the inner edge portions of said transverse members and side wall, said stakes conforming to the shape of said side wall, and` the outer edge portions of said stakes being in substantially the same vertical plane throughout the length of said stakes.

In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, of a side wall, having a vertical upper portion and an inclined lower portion, a vertical stitl'ening member secured to said side wall. said member having an enlarged inwardly extending lower portion, and a transverse member secured to said center sill and to the lower portion 'of said vertical stiiening member within the vertical plane of said side wall.
30. In a railway car, the combination with a center sill, .of a transverse member secured to said center sill, a drop door adhaving an enlarged lower portion seured V v for securing said side wall and stake together.
32. In a railway car, a center sill of a side wall having vertical and inclined portions, a transom secured to said center sill and terminating a substantial distance short of the vertical plane of the vertical portion of said side Wa l, and a vertical stake having an enlarged lower portion extending inwardly beyond the vertical' plane of the vertical portion of said side wall and secured to said transom, and means for securing said side wall to said stake'.

Ina railway car, the combination with a side wall, of a vertical member of greater length than themeight of said side wall, means mountedwithin and passing through said Vertical member adapted to i directly support dump doors, said means being in a plane below said doors and means for securing said vertical member to said side wall.

In a railway car, the combination with the underframe of a side wall, a vertical stake member secured .to said side wally and yunderframe, said vertical member having a slotted opening for the reception of a door supporting mechanism, and a removable member carried by said stake adapted to define a portion of said opening.

In a railway car, the combination with a center sill of transverse members secured thereto, side walls having vertical and inclined portions, vertical members secured to said vertical and inclined portions, said vertical members varying in cross section, bearing members secured to said vertical members, a bodily movable door operating shaft mounted in said bearing members, and means for securing said vertical members to said transverse members.

In a railway car, the combination with the sides, of a center sill, transoms secured to said sill and terminating a substantial distance within the planes of said sides, and stakes adapted to connect said sides and transoms, said stakes each having an enlarged inwardly extending lower portion secured-to one of said transoms.

In a railway car, the combination with the side wall plates, of a center sill, transoms connected with said sill and terminating a substantial distance within the vertical planes of said plates, sloping floor plates se the combination with cured to the first mentioned plates and stakes connecting said plates and transoms, said stakes having enlarged inwardly extending lower portions secured to said transoms.

In a railway car, the combination with a side wall having vertical and inclined portions of a Z-shaped stake having an outer flangey in substantially the same vertical plane throughout its length and an inner flange having vertical and sloping portions and means for securing said inner flange to theuvertical and inclined portions of said wa 39. 40. In a dump car, the combination with the center sill, of transverse members secured thereto, a side wall having vertical and inclined portions, stakes secured to said side wall and transverse members, and bodily movable door raising mechanism mounted in said stakes.

In a dump car, the combinationwith the center sill of a side wall having an inclined floor portion, transverse members secured to .said center sill, vertically disposed strengthening members secured to said transverse members and adapted to support said inclined floor portion, and bodily movable door raising means mounted in said stakes.
42. In a dump car, the combination with a side wall of a vertically disposed stake member adapted to brace said wall, a door and bodily movable door operating means mounted in said member below said side wall adapted to move under and support said door. l
43. In a dump can-the combination with a side wall, of a vertically disposed stake door supporting rollers mounted'on said shaft, said shaft and rollers being bodily removable from said member.
