GEAR-SEGMENT FOR CUTTING-WHEELS.
To all r tmcy concern:
Be it hiown that T, Lee A. Knorr, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Findlay, in the county of Hancock and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Gear-Segment tor Cutting- Wheels; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact, description or the. invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to excavating machines oi -the rotary cutting wheel type, and
particularly to an improved segmental internal gear ring for the wheel.
l n the use of machines of this character, the cutting wheel is customarily supported and guided in its rotation by flanged idler tating a replacing of the worn rings with new ones in order to maintain a rim mountare subjected and the abrasive nature of the material in which the wheel operates, thereby necessitating a frequent replacing of not only the gear segments but of the wheel rims. v
The object of my invention is to obviate the wear on the wheel rims and to so construct and arrange. the gear segments with respect to the wheel rims that all wear both from the driving of the cuttin wheel and the supporting of the same by the idler wheels occurs on the gear segments, which are capable of being quickly replaced.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred emiment Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the drawings, ll designates a cutting wheel of the type commonly used in ditching or excavating machines oi the rotary type, this wheel being formed of two transversely spaced rims 2, which carry and are connected at their outer edges by excavating buckets 3, as well understood in the art. The cutting-wheel is supported at each side thereof by a set of flanged idler rolls 4 and by a flange or hub portion of the drive pinion 5, which rolls and pinion flange have heretofore engaged directly with the inner edge of the respective wheel rim. The guide rolls i and drive pinion 5 are supported by a frame 6 between the side beams of which the cutting-wheel -is mounted.
The feature comprising my invention resides in the segments of the internal gears 7, which are riveted or otherwise suitably attached to the inner edge portion of each wheel rim 2 and mesh with respective drive pinions 5. Each segment of an internal gear 7 is composed of a body part 8, which is intended to seat against the outer side oi a rim and has its inner edge inwardly flanged,
as at 9, to extend under and entirely across the inner edge of the rim, said flange 9 cooperating with the inner edge of the body part 8 to form a broad internal bearin surface. The gear segments are provide near their outer ed es with outwardly projecting teeth 10, WhlCh are equidistantly spaced and form gear teeth with which the teeth of the respective drive pinions 5 engage. The distance between the inner edges of the gear segments and the teeth 10 is suiiicient to per mit the flanges 45 of the guide wheels 4 to lap the inner edges of the body portion of the gear segments without having contact ilti with the teeth. Each drive pinion 5 is intended to perform the function of both a drive pinion and a wheel guiding roll, and for such urpose is provided with a flange or hub en argement 5 which has rolling contact with the inner flanged edges of the gear segments.
It is evident that the provision of gear segments of this style enables such segments to fit around the inner edges of the wheel rims whereby to protect the rims from Wear and to provide a broad track for .the guide rolls to engage with, as well as a much stronger construction for the Wheel.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts, except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-
1. A cutting-wheel of the class described comprising spaced rims and having segmental internal gears secured thereto adjacent to their inner edges and embracing the inner edges of the rims to provide broadened roller bearing surfaces therefor.
2. The combination with a side -rim of a cutting-wheel of the class described, and bearing and guide rolls for said rim, of a segmental internal gear secured to a side of said rim with its teeth projecting outwardly therefrom, the segments of said gears having their inner edges inwardly flanged and extending across the inner edge of the rim to form a broadened guide roll bearing surface.
3. 'In a. machineof the class described, the combination with a cutting-wheel having annular side rims, and an internal guiding and supporting means for said rims, of an internal gear secured to the inner edge portion of each rim at the outer side thereof and comprising a plurality of segments each of which has a body portion which is secured to the outer side of the rim and has its inner edge flanged over the inner edge of the rim to form a broadened bearing surface for said guide means and to protect the rim from wear, and teeth projecting outwardly from said body portion in spaced relation to the inner edge thereof.
