CHARLES SMITH, 01? OAK LAWN, RHODE ISLAND.
MACHINE FOB DEPOSITING GOLD-LEAF UPON BOOK-COVERS OR THE LIKE.
Application filed March 1, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES E. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Oak Lawn, in the county of Providence, in'the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for Depositing Gold-Leaf Upon Book- (lovers or the like, of which the following is a specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the employment of a positively driven feedroll and a frictionally driven pressure roll for moving the article forward which is to be ornamented, and means for delivering the metallic leaf upon the surface of the said article in its forward movement, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 represents a side view of a machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of the same. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of the forward end portion of the machine, showing the driving pulley-andshaft, the upper feeding roll, and the side gage. Fig. 4 represents a section taken on the line 4, 4, of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 represents a section taken on the line 5, 5, of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 represents a horizontal section taken on the line 6, 6, of Fig. 1.
In the drawing, a represents the bed frame or table of the machine, b the driving pulley, c the driving shaft, from which rotary motion is transmitted to the longitudinal shaft d, by means of the bevel gears e and f; and from the said shaft d rotary motion is imparted to the transverse shafts g and h, by means of the bevel gears i and j, which are secured to the shaft d, and the bevel gears la and Z, which are secured to the shafts g and h. And to the said shafts e, g, and h, are attached the feed rolls m, n and 0, respectively.
To the rear end of the shaft (I, is attached the bevel gear g, which engages with the bevel gear 79 at the bottom of the upright shaft 8 shown in Fig. 5, and to the upper end of the shaft 8 is secured the bevel gear t, which engages with the bevel pinion it upon the projecting shaft of the take-up roll '0, which roll serves to take up the paper strips to, 'w, and remove them from the machine after the metallic leaf has been deposited therefrom, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The weighted rollers 00, m, which are held on the shaft y serve to hold the said paper strips in close frictional contact with the surface Specification of Letters Patent.

of the said take-up roll. The shaft 1 is looselyheld in the arms 2, 2, which are pivoted to the upper frame of the machine at the standards a a, as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and 5. The weighted rollers :20, 5c, are made adjustable upon the shaft 7 in order to provide for the desired nearness or separation of the paper strips w, w, so as to accommodate book covers or other similar articles of different widths. The pressing roller, 11 shown in Fig. 3, bears upon the surface of the book cover or other article to be gilded as it passes over the feed roll m, and is clamped to thepivot shaft 0' which is loosely held in the bearings d, d, of the frame; and to the projecting end e of the said pivot shaft 0 is attached the weighted arm I" which serves to cause the pressing roller 6' to be firmly held against the surface of the said article. Upon the ends of the fiat. springs g g are placed the ailing pads h h, by means of which a deposit of oil will be made upon the said article to be gilded, the springs g g being suitably clamped to the said pivot shaft 0 so as to be capable of lateral adjustment, when required. The pressing roller 71 is clamped to the pivot shaft 7" which is loosely held in the bearing is, Z, of the upper frame, and to the projecting end m of the said shaft 7', is attached the weighted lever n, and by means of the said weighted lever the roller 1' will be pressed firmly upon the surface of the said article to be gilded, as it passes over the feed roll n. The pressing roller 0 is clamped to the pivot shaft 79' which is loosely held in the bearings 9", g, of the frame, and serves by its pressure upon the surface of the said article to be gilded, to cause it to be drawn forward after it has received the metallic leaf from the paper strips, 10, w.
The package roll holders 8 s are removably connected to the adjustable sleeves t, t, upon the shaft j, by means of the dovetailed socket u, and held in position therein by means of the rotary button 1), as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The rear sides of the said sleeves t, t, are provided with an upwardly curved arm w, and between the fixed stud w and the eye y on the arm to is placed the contractile spring a, which serves to cause the delivering roller a', of the said package roll holders 8, to press firmly upon the upper surface of the said article to be gilded, and the delivering roller (1 is held away from contact with the said article whenever required, by means of the pawl a which is engaged with the projecting arm d of the frame, and serves to hold back the a rm w,
When the machine is in operation, the article to be ornamented is carried through the same by the conjoint, action of the series of feed rolls and pressure rollers, the said pressure rollers being held to working contact with the surface of the said article, by means of the weighted arms. attached to thefpiyot shafts, while the delivering rollers for the. metallic leaf, are piyotally connected with the said pivot shafts, and; are actuated; to.
contact with the said article, by meansofthe springs, and are thus caused, to act independently of the weighted ,r )re ssure, roller. At the back side of the tablea, is placed t-he adjustable guide 0 alongwhich the edgeof the book cover or other article to bezgilded,
is moved.
I claim as my invention:
1. In a machine of the character. described, the combination of a, driyen feed roll and a conjoint pressure roll for passing the article to be ornamented, forward, means for supporting a package rollxof metallic leaf for unwinding. movement, and, a
pivot'ally supported gravitating frictionally rotated delivering roller adapted to engage with the surface of the article to be orna mented, and thereby cause the unwinding movement of the said package roll, and the delivery of the metallic leaf to the said surface. I
2. In a machine of the. character described, the combination of a feed-roll, and a pressure roller for drawing the article to be ornamented forward, a package roll holder, and;v delivering roller for depositing a, fillet ofmetallic leaf upon the said article, an oiling pad for oiling the surface of said article preparatory to depositing the.
metallic leaf thereon.
3; In, a machine of the character described, the combination of a feed roll and a pressure roller for drawingthe article forward, a packageroll holder and delivering rollervfordepositing a fillet of metallic leaf upon the said article, an oiling pad for oiling the surface of said article, and a reservoir for, supplying oil to the oiling pad.
