Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 191 6.
Application filed June 8, 1914. Serial No. 843,683.
' Backing for Teeth, of which the following is a specification.
Thls invention has reference to a new and improved article of manufacture, being a ready-made adaptable backing for porcelain teeth, such as molars, bicuspids and facings.
The article comprises a backing forming a chair for the facing or tooth, bent into form from a suitable piece of metal and having a retention post or pin attached thereto, preferably being soldered or Welded.
Figure 1 shows opposite views. in perspective, of one form of backing; Fig. 2 shows opposite views, in perspective, of another form of backing, and Fig. 3 shows opposite views in perspective, of still a further form of backing.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the figures.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2, the article comprises essentially a backing in the form of a chair 1, same being bent into form from a suitable piece of metal and having the part 2 which lies against the posterior face or surface of a tooth; the opposite side walls or parts 8 adapted to engage or lie against the approximal surfaces of a tooth; the flange or part 4 to engage or lie against the gingival margin of a tooth, and the flange or part 5, similar to the flange or part 4, to engage or lie against the occlusal surface of a tooth.
The portions 8, 4 and 5 of the chair are continuations, one of another and are integral with the part 2. The part 2 may have the shapes shown in Figs. 1 and 2, or the necessary shape to conform to the tooth to which they are adapted, as will be understood by those skilled in the art to which the articles pertain.
6 denotes a retention post or pin. These posts or pins have a part 7 to be inserted into a tooth, to which the backing is attached, and of course will be of a shape to conform to the opening in the teeth. Each post or pin 6 has a projection 8 which passes through an opening in the part 2 of the backing and soldered or welded thereto, so as to produce a firm connection between the same and retain the post or pin 6 fixed relative to the backing to aid in interchange ability of the backing to teeth of the same kind.
In Fig. 3 the backing 1, does not have the opposite side walls or parts 3, and in place of the part L, has a bent portion 9 to form a protecting tip for the incisal edge of the tooth, and instead of the part 5 has a bent portion 10 to conform to the cervical border of the tooth.
hat I claim is An article of manufacture, comprising a metallic backing for a tooth or facing, said backing being bent into form from a single sheet of metal and having a portion adapted to lie against the posterior face of a tooth; opposite side portions of approximately triangular shape, adapted to lie against the approximal surfaces of the tooth; a bent over portion at one end of the backing merging smoothly into said opposite side portions, adapted to lie against the gingival margin of the tooth, and a similar bent over portion at the other end of the backing merging smoothly into said opposite side portions, adapted to lie against the occlusal surface of the tooth and a post or pin at tached to said backing.
