To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE N. FRAZER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Eugene, in the county of Lane and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hydrants, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in hydrants, and more particularly to that type disclosed in my patent application, Serial No. 874,193, allowed January 27, 1915.
One of the principal objects of the invention is to provide an improvement in the drainage means of the hydrant, such improvement embodying a drainage plug normally closing a drain opening, the plug be ing provided with a drain valve automatically operable when the inlet valve is in closed position, to be opened for providing a continuous drainage from the hydrant casing.
A further object is toprovide an improvement embodying the plug having a drain opening or channel arrangedtherein and controlled by a drain valve, means being provided whereby the inlet valve lever will automatically operate in raising or opening the drain valve when the inlet valve is in closed or seated position.
A further object is to provide a device of the class described which will be extremely simple, durable, eflicient in operation and inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view which will become apparent as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several figures, of which Figure 1 represents a view in section taken through the base or inlet section of the hydrant, showing the improvement in place therein, Fig. 2represents a top plan view of the drainage plug removed, and Fig. 3 represents a view in section taken vertically on the plane indicated by the line 3-3 of Fig. 2, looking in the direction indicated by the arrows.
In carrying out my invention, I provide a base or inlet section 5, having a lateral inlet .or port 6. The base or inlet section is substantially similar to that described and shown in my application, Serial No. 874,193, above mentioned.
Extending within the inlet or port 6, is a bushing 7 provided with an annular outwardly extending flange 8, adapted to rest and be secured against the outer face of the hydrant adjacent the port. The inner end of the bushing extends slightly within the base section 5 and is adapted to act as a seat for the inlet valve 9. In lieu of the bushing, to which the water main leads, I may use an elbow or section of the type disclosed in my prior application.
The inlet valve 9 is connected by means of a link or links 10, with the rod 11 actuable by mechanism described in my prior application in such manner as to swing the valve against and away from its seat in closing or opening the inlet port. The valve is suitably faced with leather or rubber indicated at 12, adapted to be compressed against the valve seat when said valve is closed in order to provide a leak proof joint. Valve 9 is formed on the upper end of a valve lever 13, which corresponds to the analogous lever illustrated in my prior application.
In connection with the improvement forming the subject of my present application, the lower end of the base or inlet section is preferably, but not necessarily, offset as at 141. This offset portion at its lower end is provided with an opening as at 15. A bushing 16 having a funnel or cone-shaped bore 17 is disposed within opening 15, and is provided with an external annular flange 18, which rests against the bottom of the base or inlet section and may be in any suitable manner secured thereto. The extreme lower end of bore 17 merges with the cylindrical bore 19 in the lower portion of the bushing. This bushing is adapted to accommodate a drain plug 20. The plug is provided on its upper face with a pair of spaced ears 21 between which the lower end of lever 13 is pivoted as at 22. The main portion of the plug is substantially cylindrical and at its lower end is externally threaded as at 23. The upper end of the plug is provided with an outwardly extending annular flange 24:, having a beveled surface 25. The flange serves as an anchorage or hearing for one end of a series of rubber or other suitable washers 26, which are slipped upon the body portion of the plug beneath said flange. The washers similar to the flange, have their outer edges beveled as at 27 at an inclination adapted to conform to the inclination of the walls of bore 17. In order that the washers may be securely maintained in place, I thread upon the lower end of the plug a closed nut 28. When in position the nut compresses the washers against flange 24 and prevents their accidental removal. The lower or closed end of the nut occurs in spaced relation to the lower edge or face of the plug when the nut is turned home, a chamber 29 being formed. This chamber is provided with outlet openings 30, communicating with the outside atmosphere. A bore or outlet passage 31 provides communication between chamber 29 and the interior of the base or inlet section of the hydrant. In order that closed nut 28 will not become accidentally removed or lost, I provide a bolt 32, extending through the closed end of the nut and turned into a threaded recess 33 provided in the body of the drain plug. The outlet passage or bore 31 is controlled by a drain valve 34. having a fluted or ribbed stem 35, projecting with the bore or passage. A compressible washer or facing 36 provided on the valve is adapted to be compressed against the upper face of the plug adjacent the bore or outlet passage when the drain valve is in closed position.
The drain valve is operated from the lever 13 through the medium of a lever 37. This lever is disposed between the lower end of lever 13 and the drain plug, and is centrally pivoted at 38 between a pair of ears 39 rising from the plug and between the ears 21. What may be termed the inner end of lever 37 is provided with a slot or elongated opening 40 through which projects a pin 41, carried by a pair of cars 42, which arise from the upper surface of drain valve 34. The outer end of the drain valve lever 37 is provided with an adjustable pin or bolt 43, which extends upwardly toward the lever 15. The latter adjacent its lower end has a laterally extending lug or dog 44 provided thereon, said dog having a fiat under'surface 45.
When the inlet valve 9 is in closed position. the valve lever 13 is swung from a vertical to an inclined position. As it nears the limit of its inclination, the lug 44 engages with the pin or bolt 43, thus depressing the outer end and hence raising the inner end of the drain valve lever 37. This operation serves to lift the drain valve from its seat in order to establish communication through the bore 31, chamber 29 and outlet 30. so that any water which may remain within the hydrant casing will find free passage to the exterior of said casing.
In opening the inlet valve by reason of the rod 11 being raised vertically, the valve lever 13 is moved from an inclined to a vertical positionand in so doing the lug 44 leaves the pin or bolt 43, and the drain valve 34 is thus allowed by its own weight to close. Furthermore when the water from the water main rushes into the base or inlet section, its pressure maintains the drain valve in closed position and similarly acts upon the upper surface of plug 20 in order to maintain the latter in tightly seated position so that there will be no leakage at either of these points during the time that the hydrant casing is flooded.
The whole apparatus, that is, the inlet valve, link 10, rod 11, valve lever 13, and the plug 20, together with the mechanism carried thereby is adapted to be lifted clean out of the base or inlet section, when an inspection of the hydrant is desired, as in the manner set out in my previous application. 'l/Vhen this is done the bottom of the hydrant casing is opened, and the interior of i t the casing may therefore be readily inspected and cleaned. In placing the device within the hydrant it is lowered therein, and the plug is properly guided into engagement with the bushing 16, initially by the act of the closed nut 28, which is provided with an annular beveled surface 46 at its lower end, in engaging and centering within the bore of the bushing.
In order that the inlet valve may also readily be guided into its proper position. the base or inlet section 5 is provided adjacent the inlet port 6, and near the lower point of the latter with a pair of inwardly extending al-ined lugs 47. These lugs extend inwardly fromthe opposite sides of. the base section, and are spaced apart a distance substantially equal to or slightly greater than the width of thevalve lever 13 on each side of which they lie. When the mechanism is lowered within the hydrant, the lever is engaged between the lugs 47 so as to guide the inlet valve properly into position against its seat. The distanceof lugs 47 from the rear wall of the base or inlet section is great enough to allow free passageof the drain plug between said lugs and rear wall during the operation of raising and lowering the apparatus within the base.
Although I have described the preferred embodiment of my invention I may desire to I make such changes in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts thereof as do not depart from the spirit of the inven tion, and the scope of the appended claims.
I claim 1. A device of-the class described, including a base section having a lateral inlet port and having an opening at its lower end, a member disposed within the inlet port and adapted to form a valve seat, a bushing disposed within said opening and provided with a funnel shaped bore, an inlet valve adapted to'b'moved'relativelyto said member for controlling the inlet port, a lever on which the inlet-valve 'is carried, a plug adapted to be disposed within the said bushing and being provided with a series of washers having tapering outer edges adapted to coact with the bushing in forming a liquid proof joint, aclosed nutcarried by the plug and serving to maintain the washers against accidental displacement from theplug, said nut coacting with the plug in forming a chamber, said nut being provided with openings forming an exit from the chamber, said plug being provided with an outlet passage communicating with said chamber and with the interior of the base section, a lever hingedly connected to the plug, a drain valve operable by the lever whereby to control the said outlet passage, a hinge connection between first said lever and the plug, and coacting means between first said lever and the last said lever adapted to operate the latter when the inlet valve is moved into closed position whereby to raise the drain valve and adapted when the inlet valve is moved into open position to release the drain valve, substantially as described.
2. A device of the class described, including an inlet section having an inlet port and having an opening at its lower end, an inlet valve for controlling the inlet port, a lever on which said inlet valve is carried, a bushing adaptedto be disposed within said opening and provided with a beveled bore, a plug adapted to be disposed within said bushing and being provided with a plurality of washers adapted to coact with the bushing in forming a liquid proof joint, a hinge connection between the plug and lever, a drain passage provided in the plug and adapted when opened to allow drainage of said base section, a drain valve lever hingedly connected with said plug, a drain valve carried by the drain valve lever and adapted to control the drain passage, and coacting means between first said lever and said drain valve lever, adapted to operate said drain valve lever whereby to lift the drain valve when the inlet valve is in seated position, and to release the drain valve when the inlet valve is in open position.
3. A device of the character described, including a base section provided with an in: let port and further provided with an opening, a valve for controlling the inlet port, a removable plug adapted to normally close said opening, a lever connected to said valve, said lever being hingedly connected to the plug, a drain passage provided in said plug, a. drain valve adapted to control said drain passage, means for actuating the drain valve, and coacting means between said drain valve actuating means and said lever adapted to open the drain valve when first said valve is in closed position, and to release the said drain valve when the first said valve is in open position.
4. A device of the class described, including a base section, said base section being provided with an opening and with an inlet, a valve for controlling the inlet, a removable plug for controlling said opening, a connecting means between the inlet valve and plug, said connecting means adapted to move with the inlet valve, a drain passage provided in the plug, a drain valve for controlling said passage, and coacting means between the valve and said connecting means adapted to operate whereby to open the drain valve when the inlet valve is closed, and to release the drain valve when the inlet valve is open.
5. In a device of the class described, a plug provided with an annular flange at its upper end, a plurality of washers disposed upon said plug and bearing against said flange, a closed nut adapted to be threaded upon said plug against the washers, and adapted to form a chamber beneath the plug, said closed nut being provided with a plurality of openings forming a discharge means for the chamber, means for preventing accidental removal of the nut from the plug, said plug being provided with a drain passage communicating with said chamber, a drain valve lever pivoted upon the plug, a drain valve actuable by the lever for controlling the said drain passage, a valved lever hingedly connected with the plug, and adapted to move relatively thereto for controlling an inlet valve, a lug carried by said valve lever, and an adjustable pin carried by said drain valve lever, said pin adapted to be engaged by said lug when said valve lever is moved into position to close the inlet valve, whereby to open said drain valve, said pin adapted to be released by the lug when said valve lever is moved into position for opening the inlet valve whereby to release the drain valve.
6. A device of the class described, including a section having an inlet port and having an opening, an inlet valve for controlling the inlet port, a removable closure for controlling said opening, drainage means provided in said removable closure, connecting means between the inlet valve and said closure, said connecting means including an element movable with the inlet valve relative to the closure, mechanism for controlling the drainage means through the closure, and coacting means between said mechanism and said movable element for opening the drainage passage when the inlet valve is moved into closed position and for closing the drainage passage when the inlet valve is moved into open position.
