FURNACE ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM H. BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Minneapolis, in the county of Hennepin and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Furnace Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
The primary object of this invention is the production of draft means for furnaces, which is adapted to promote combustion of fuel in a fire box and eliminate smoke, fumes and cinders, thus effecting a saving in fuel and reducing damage to property. It has been usualto employ a tube or tubes for admitting air into burning gases from fuel, but the air is introduced and confined to a limited zone of the gases leaving the remainder unaffected and not consumed. My invention provides a plurality of draft tubes, so arranged in a fire box as to supply air to the gases at their hottest part throughout substantially the entire surface of the fuel in the fire box, whereby all of the gases and fuel are consumed. The shape of my improved draft tube which is used with my invention is also novel as it is adapted to conduct the influx of air and spread it into contact with the hottest part of the gases from the burning fuel.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of a boiler furnace of locomotive type; Fig. 2 is a section of Fig. 1 taken upon the line X-X; Fig. 3 is a perspective looking at the inner face of the fire box door showing my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 4 is a detail in section of one of the draft tubes constructed in accordance with my invention and applied to one of the fire box walls.
In the drawing A indicates a fire box hav-, ing a grate 2, and side walls 3, 4:, 5 and 6, which for the purpose of this specification forms substantially an inclosing wall. These walls are of usual construction being double and forming a hot Water jacket connected with the boiler surrounding the fire box. The wall 5 is provided with the usual door 7 which is hung in the usual manner. This door has an opening 8 enveloped by the large end of a funnel B forming one of my improved draft devices. The lnner end of this funnel is curved downwardly into the fire box, so as to direct a draft of air through its small end 9 down toward the Specification of Letters Patent. central portion of the bed of burning coal lying upon the grate. The large end of the funnel B is formed with a circular flange 10 which is secured to the inner face of the fire door around the opening 8, such as by bolts 11. This draft device by its inwardly tapering and downwardly curved shape is adapted to spread a current of air down into a central zone of the hot gases from the fire, the outer lateral portion of the hot gases from the fire bed not receiving suflicient air to promote complete combustion. I have therefore provided a plurality of draft devices C projecting inwardly through the walls of the fire box and admitting air down into the hot unconsumed gases. In this manner all of the unconsumed hot gases above the bed of burning fuel is supplied with oxygen and the gases completely consumed. Each of these draft devices C is of similar construction to the central device B on the door excepting that the funnel 12 in the fire box is formed with a backwardly extending tube 13 which is passed through a suitable opening in the double wall of the fire box and beaded and rolled into tight engagement with the outer and inner plates thereof. By this means a current of air is admitted through the wall of the fire box and directed down toward the bed of fuel adjoining its sides. As many draft devices C as are needed to promote complete combustion are arranged around the bed of fuel, through the sides of the fire box, with their inner ends directed downwardly in the most advantageous position to admit air to the hot unconsumed gases from the fuel needing oxygen to complete combustion. By using a large number of draft devices as described the pressure or force of the draft is reduced so that the air will more readily mix with the gases, it being obvious that if the draft is forced inwardly upon the fire at too high a pressure the benefits derived will consequently be reduced. It is not necessary to employ the exact number of draft devices illustrated to accomplish the results desired within the scope of my invention nor is it necessary to employ the specific constructions of fastening means illustrated for securing the draft devices in position. The inner ends of each of the draft devices is substantially a downwardly curved inwardly tapering funnel or nozzle, its orifice being substantially circular across.
There the term fire box is employed in the above specification and the claims following I mean it to include any form of structure in which the fuel is contained and supported upon a grate as applied to horizontal boilers of the locomotive or any other type, vertical boilers, stoves, furnaces and any form of heater.
In accordance with the patent statutes, I have described the principles of operation of my invention together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof but I desire to have it understood that the construction shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means and applied to uses other than those above set forth within the scope of the following claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is 1. In combination with a furnace fire box having double side and end walls and a grate adapted to support fuel, and a plurality of spaced draft devices extending through said walls and substantially around the fire box, each of said draft devices being bent intermediate its ends so that its discharge opening feeds air directly upon the fuel at a point adjacent the fire box walls, and each of said draft devices having an annular bead intermediate its ends contacting with the inner face of the inner wall of said fire box, the outer edge of each of said draft 7 devices being rolled to engage the outer face of the outer wall of said fire box.
2. The combination with a furnace fire box havino side and end walls, one of the end walls being provided with an opening, the other walls being provided with a plurality of spaced openings, a door for closing the opening in the end wall, said door being provided with a comparatively large air feeding opening, means carried by the door within the opening therethrough for. directing the air entering such opening clownwardly upon the bed of fuel substantially in. the center thereof, and air feeding means located in each of the openings in the other walls of the fire box having their discharge ends turned downwardly to deliver air on the fuel immediately adjacent the walls of the fire box.
