Description

-' C MRE ALARM.

APPLICA? JULIOUS L. WEATHEBS, 0F SHELBY, NORTH CAROLINA.
ELECTRIC FIRE-ALARIf-I.
Specication of Letters Patent.
rammed Feb. 22, 191e.
.application led Februari7 5, 1915. Seria?. No. 6,5? 3.
.f o mZ iii/wm it' may Concern:
5e it liner-fn that l', .l'ULroUs L. VVEATHERS, r. citizen of 'the United States, residing at Q in the county Cleveland and No "L Carolina, have invented cern ner-Y rms, of which the following is This invention relates to electric-fire alarm systems, Aand more particularly to systems this character which are automatically crateri by an abnormal rise oil tempera L e, or the presence of fire adjacent anyone The main object oi the invention is to provide in connection with systems of this hind., an automatic circuit closer oi3 improved construction, so arranged as to be instantly operated by a flame in its vicinity, however small.
t further object is to provide a circuit closer of this character which shall be Simple in construction and positive and certain its operation.
l'n order that the invention maybe readily understood, reference is had to, the accom-l panying drawings, iorming a part ofl this specification, and in which,
Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section through my improved circuit closer; Fig. 2
. tend through the base so that their ends constitute binding posts to which the circuit wires 4 and 5 are secured.
The contacts 2 and 3 are adapted to be bridged by a bar orl switch member 6to which is attached one end of a helical spring if, while the other end of such spring. 1s secured at 8 to the base. A tubular housing 9, shown. as square in cross section, incloses the spring 7, and is provided adjacent one end with a pair oi slots 10, through which the switch member 6 extends and in which such .member is free to slide. These slots constitute a guide for the switch member.
The switch member b' is normally held out of engagement with the contact posts 2 and 3, against thetension of the spring 7, byv
means of a fusible link 12, one end of which is secured to the switch member 6, as by means of a hoch' 1i, while the other end is secured to the base, as indicated 13. rThis fusible linl: may 'be formed .ei ier of an alloy of verj low melting p known. in the art, or co of combusti 's material, or cellulose str g or thro therefore he understood by he term fusible linie, intend to include all such equivalents. The switch member 6 and associated parte are inclosed by suitable shield ist, secured to the base at .ier side. Adapted to be secured to the case l in such manner as to envelop the previously described, is a cover or cage consisting of a Jframe 15, to Whichpis attached a Wire netting 16 `of comparatively large mesh. This cage is entirely filled with loose inflammable material 17, suchas raw cotton, tufts o which project through the meshes of the wire netting, as indicated at 18, so as to be exposed to any llame which may occur. It is therefore obvious that if a fire should break out so as to produce a lame in the neighborhood oi? a circuit closer so conv structed, the cotton tufts would be immedi? ately ignited and the cotton contained in the cage thus Seton fire, the heat generated thereby serving to destroy the fusible link 12, and the spring 7 would thereupon operate to draw the switch member 6 against the contacts 2 and 8, thus closing the circuit.
What l claim is:
1. In a tire alarm system, an automatic circuit closer comprising a switch member, means for moving saidswitch member to circuit closing position, a fusible link normally restraining the movement of said switch member, a cage inclosin all of said parts, and a mass of combusti le materialfilling said cage and projecting through the Walls thereof.'
2..'In a alarm system, an automatic circuit closer comprising a switch member, means for moving said switch member to circuit closing position, a fusible link nor mally restraining the Amovement of said switch member., a wire cage inclosing said parts, and a mass of fibrous combustible material contained in said cage and having pemiems projecting hl'eugh the meshes heeeof, whereby am outside eme may zeay ignite the seme.,
'3. me e ellam sysem, e circuit dieser comprising e bese, e peil' of comme 'pests eeme thereby, e swheh member @flamed t@ engage and e' eefrleeuy eeumeel amd pests,
e spring urging Seial switch member sewam said pests, a illisible link es'emimg the movemem; ef seid switch member`l` mess of combusebe materiel emveepimg seid pwts einem Y
