ROBERT W. WADE, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
sAsH-oom) FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patelited Feb. 22, 1916.
' Application filed April 3, 1914. Serial No. 829,394.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that LRonnnr W. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bal timore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Cord Fasteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in fastening devices and more particularly to a fastener employed for attaching the weight cord to a window sash, and the primary object of the invention is the provision of a fastener constructed with a single strand or length of wire bent to form a cord engaging portion and sash engaging portion for detachably attaching the weight cord to a window sash.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, this invention consists in such novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings, wherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which,
Figure 1 is a view of a window sash showing parts of the same broken away to expose the improved weight cord fastener attached thereto, Fig. 2 is an enlarged end view of the sash showing the cord fastener applied thereto, and, Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the improved fastener.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates a window sash of any ordinary construction, which has the side strips 2 and 3, for engagement with the frame of the window, and which end pieces are slidably mounted in the window frame (not shown) the vertical sliding movement of the same being regulated by weights (not shown) carried by the window frame (not shown). In the construction of window frames of this nature, the weights are suspended within the window frame or casing, and passing over pulleys (not shown), are connected to the sides of the window sash, and Fig. 1 of the drawing shows the window sash weight cord 4 or flexible member extending downwardly along the sides 2 and 3 of the window sash being positioned in the vertically extending slots 5, which slots are formed in the outwardedges ofthe sides 2 and 3 of the window sash 1. The slots 5 terminate inwardly in an enlarged recess 6, which recess is provided for the reception of a knot 7, which is formed on the terminal end of the weight cord 4, and the weight cord 4 1s held in engagement with the window sash 1, and properly positioned in the slot 5 by the engagement between the knot 7 and the angled connected end 8 of the fastening member 9.
The fastening member 9 is constructed of a single strand or length of wire, having its terminal ends 10 and 11 sharpened for insertion into the sides 2 or 3 of the window sash 1, the wire is bent inwardly substantially at right-angles to the terminal ends 10 and 11, as is shown at 12 and is again bent up at 13, forming an elongated cord gripping portion 14, which extends substantially at rightangles to the straight terminal ends 10 and 11, and also to the sections of the wire positioned between the corners 12 and 13, lying in a plane with the latter sections, and forming a substantially U-shaped cord engaging portion. The terminal end or the connected portion of the U-shaped cord engaging section is bent downwardly a short distance inwardly from the terminal end thereof, for transverse positioning in the slot 5, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawmgs.
In the application of the improved cord fastener, the ends 10 and 11 of the cord fastener 9 are driven into the ends 2 or 3 of the sash, marginally of the recesses 6, and the U-shaped cord engaging portions extend longitudinally within the groove 5, having its angled terminal end extending transversely into the groove. The weight cord 4 is positioned so the knot 7 formed on the terminal end thereof, may be inserted into the recess 6, rearwardly of the sections of the fastening device between the angles 12 and 13, and it is then drawn upwardly, so that the knot 7 will pass between the substantially parallel straight arms 14 being securely held therein for the engagement of the knot with the wall of the recess 6, while the arms 14 prevent the knot from being forced out of the recess 6. The angle connected end of the Ushaped cord engaging portion forms a guide for the weight cord and further facilitates in preventing the removal of the cord 4 from the slot 5.
Having thus fully described the invenhaving the upper conneoted" end of said 19 tion, What is claimed is parallel arms bent inwardly at right angle A sash cord fastener comprising a single thereto. length of Wire, bent to assume substantially In testimony whereof I afiix my signature two parallel arms of equal length, the ends in presence of two witnesses.
of said arms being bent outwardly in a1ine v ROBERT W. WADE. ment with and inwardly transversely to said Witnesses: arms, the inwardly extended portions being FRANC S T. BANNON,
sharpened forming sash engaging ends, and CAMILLA D. NICHOLSON.
