To allwwm imag/concern:
Be it known that'I, Hafnvnx- O. SHERRrcx, a citizen of Vthe United States, residing at Elida, in thecounty of Allen, State of Ohio, have invented a new and vuseful Hens Nest;
and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a. full, clear, and exact description ofthenvention, such as willfenable others skilled in the-art to 'which itappertains to make and use the same.
This inventi'onfrelat'es to an improved hens nest and more especially togthat class having for its object the provision ofA meansV for retaining or trapping the hen in the nest,
particularly when sitting, in order to avoid being annoyed bythe other hens.;
Anotherobject of the invention is the provision of a nest of this character, in which simple, efficient and practical features of construction are involved.
One of the features kof the invention is the provision of a suitable housing, which may be constructed' of any suitable 'material, preferably galvanized Atin and the like, and provided with av hinged closure, designed to be swung upwardly when opening the same, and adapted for use in conjunction with proved means for propping the closurein'an open position, said propping means beingof such improved construction, andvpivotally arranged in the housing, Vas to be tripped by the hen as the hen enters the housing, thereby throwing the laterally extending arms of thepropping means from` the path of angu lar members or lugs upon the inner face of the closure, thereby permitting the closure to'.` Vgravita-te upon its hinged connection to aV closed position, in order to trap the hen in the housing. i
In practical fields `thedetails of construction may necessitate alterations, falling within the 'scope of what is claimed..
The invention comprises further features and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawingsv and claimed.
vIn the drawings; Figure 1 is a vview in front elevation of the housingwin which the nest is built,showing the closure in an open position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2 2 of A Fig. 1, illustrating the closure propped open'. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view showing the closure in its closed posi` tion. Fig. 4 is an enlargedV detail perspective view of the pivoted propping means.
VReferring more especially to the drawings, 1 designates a suitable housing, Vwhich;
be -i-suitable vsvhape or configuration, andin which a nestl for a hen may 'be built. llhe front-Wall ofthe housing is provided-with anopening 2, andv hingedlat 'adi )acentthe upper edgeof theopening isa closure 4. Securedgupon the` inner, face of are adj acent thehingeconnection' of thejcl'o'- sure.` A rod Gextends transversely ofthe.;A housing 1n` itslupper-:portiom Vand vsomewhat closeto where the closure Ais hinged. The opposite ends of Vthe rod ,6 Vare secured in the oppositeside's.; of the, housing, fas show-n at 7,' topreventy rotating of the rod and lendvvise movement thereof. Pivoted upon the lrod 6 asfshownat 8is af tripping'V member 9. This tripping member Vconsists Vthe closure are two anglemembers 5, w,h'ic'hfA i of a single length of wire,-bent upon itself i* in two placesv as shown'at 10, to form Adownwardly extending loop arms 11. The sides are coiled about the rod 6 as shown at 8 to 12 of the loop arms at theirV upper parts afford the pivotal connections. The sides Y' 13 of said looped A' arms extend upwardly and merge into the transverse part 14, which extends vbeyond the'rod 6, sothat the'armsxv u in laterally extending arms15,which are. positionedl at right angles to the arms 11,
andv Which arms 15 are designedto engage the-lateral parts or lugs 16 of the angle members or plates-5, so asto hold the closure propped open, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The back of the housing is provided with guides 18 to receive a slidingl closure `19.
The top of the housing is provided with an opening 20 to permit ventilation.
In use the closure 4 is raised as shown in Y Figs. 1.and2, and the tripping member 9 is set as disclosed in F igs.' 2and 4,-'so that Y lthearrns V11 extend downwardly, while the arms' 15 extend laterally'injorderto engage VtheLlugs or parts -16 of theangle members or plates 5, thereby` supporting the 'closurer VA4,v as seen inFigs. 1 and 2.- -Ajzh'ensvnest (not shown) may be built in thejhousing, and when the hen enters the housing, Vits body contacts with the arms 11and moves the armsin the direction of the arrow af thereby withdrawing the arms 15 .from the. path of the parts or lugs .16, ofjthe angle members or plates 5, in which ease the clo- Vsure 4 Vwillfall to a closed position, as seen with its body, therebyuin this manner pre-y.
in F 3, and owingto'the front wall .of
the housing being inclined, the closure 4;
will remain closed tightly, and owing to the V weight of. the closure, the hen is prevented n from liftingand `forcing the closure open l venting'the escape'of thehen.
From the foregoing it is `.tobeobserved that the hen is easily retained in the housing and on its nest,I particularly when sitting, thereby avoiding beingv annoyed by the other hen. However, when-it is desired to release the Ihen the slide closure 19 mayberemoved, thereby Vpermittingthe -henzto pass out at Vtheifrear ofithe nest. 1 Y
The'. partsfrl and the .part 14 fooperate Vwith 'the side oie. the rod 6 opposite the rear of the housing, So as to otferfiiotional resistance, to hold the tripping; member in the positionvset, luntil tripped by the hen entering the'entraneeopening-1 f The inventionhaving been set forth-What* isv claimed asrnew'ai'i'dfuseful is:
Gopesof this patent-,may`be=obtainedfo1w 'An'iinproved iiestcoinprising a housing having its front Wallprovided with a hinged 1, 'closure haviiigfupon its inner face a pair of angular-members, a rod arranged transvversely of the housing `near itsupper por;` tion adjacent the hinged connection ofi the closure, a tripping member constructed from1 a single-length of spring `wire pivoted upon said rod and lia-ving lateralV arms adapted:
