7G. 91- y i fez-neg UNITED STATES; PATENT DRILL & 1VIACI'IINE COMPANY, OF' NEW' B EDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORA TIQN OF .MASSACHUSETTS.
- REAMER."
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLIS S; FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedforchin the county of Bristol, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful, Improvement in Reamers, of
which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to reamers, cutters, taps, and the like, but more particularly to such as areadjustable, and it has for its object to provide a more simple: and efficient construction than has heretofore been known. The same is particularly an improvement on the device disclosed in the United States patent of William J. Smith, numbered 783,904, and bearing date ofFebruary 28, 1905. v
In the construction described in the patent above referred to, the stoc'kwas bored out to form ahollow tube inwhich was a central diaphragm dividing the .tube into two compartments or chambers. The chamber in front of this diaphragm was adapted to contain a cutter controlling cam piece which was drawn longitudinally within the stock by a bolt co-acting with the diaphragm. To manufacture such a stock one chamber was bored, the stock then inverted, and the other chamber bored. After inverting the stock, it was extremely difficult to so fix the same in the machine that the axis of the second chamber would exactly coincide with the axis of the first chamber.- A slight inaccuracy in the boring of the chambers would cause the finished tool to operate inaccurately. To overcome this difficulty a construction has been devised in which the entire boring of the stock may be done from one end of the same and no inverting or removing from the machine'during the boring process is necessary.
The many features of the invention will be fully described hereinafter andincluded in the claims.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the invention complete. Fig- 2, same as Fig. 1,
but with the cutter adjusting and locking mechanism removed, as.will be fully described hereinafter. Fig. 3, section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1, the campiecebeing shown in full, as will be fully described herein Specification of Letters Patent.
after. Figs. 1 and 5. detailvie ws, as will 1 be fully describedhereinafter. I 7 Referring to the drawings, the preferred WILLIS S. FULLER, OF NEW BEDFOBIJ, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO MOItSE T'WIST atented Feb. 22, 1 916. I Application filed July 16,1912. Seria1No. 709,769. 7
embodiment of the invention is shown to comprise a stock 10' bored outl to form a hollow tube, as is best shown in Fig; 2 of the drawings. V
The diameter of bore of the rear portion 11 of the tube is preferably greater than that of the forward portion 12 so that a shoulder 13 is formed atthe junction. cf the two bores. The forward portionof the stock is provided with slots 14.- in'which rest the cutters 15.
Within the forward chamber 12 of the stock rests the cam piece lfiwhich is pro,- yided with the cam faces 17 adapted to co: act with the under face of the cutters 15 so that when the cam piece is rotatedwithin.
the chamber 12, the cutters are forced out wardly in the stock." l H a Extending rear'wardly fromthe cam piece 16 is a bolt 18 upon which is the washer 1 9 preferably fitting the bore of the chamber 11 of the stock This washer preferably forms a bearing for the rear end of the cam piece 16 and is adapted to act against the shoulder 13 to permit the nut 20 upon the bolt 18'acting against the rear face of the washer to cause the cam piece 16 to be drawn rearwardly within the stock.
The cutters 15 are preferably firmlv clamped to the came in any position by, means of the incllned face 21 of the cut away portion 22 in the cam piece acting against I the corresponding inclined face of the tongue 23' projecting from the back edge of each cutter as is bestshown in Fig. '1. r
In the forward extremity of the tube the diameter of bore is preferably reduced to form an annular flange 24in which fits the reduced end 25 of the cam piece 16 and this flange forms a bearing for the forward end of the cam piece. In the earlier patent hereinbefore referred to, the extremities of the cam piece which formed the supporting surfaces therefor, were of greater radius than the outer: edges of the cam faces, so that it was extremely difiicult to grind these cam faces without injuring the supporting surfaces. In the present invention these supporting surfaces are preferably of less r dius than the cam faces andthus' do'not' in the construction and arrangement of parts may be made by anyone skilled in the artand he does not care to be limited to the particular embodiment herein shown and described except as required by the scope of a the claims,
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a device of the class described, a strck bored to form a-hollow tube, radially adjustable cutters in said stock, an annular shoulder formed on said stock and integral therewith in the boreof said tube near its forward extremity, and a rotary cam piece in said tube having its reduced forward extremity fitting within said annular shoulder as a bearing and its cam faces adapted to coact with said cutters. v
2. In a device of the class described, a stock bored to form a hollow tube, radially adjustable cutters in said stock, an annular shoulder formed integral with said stock within said tube near its forward extremity, a rotary cam piece in said tubehaving its reduced forward extremity fitting within said annular member as a bearing and its cam faces adapted to coact with said cutters,
and a second annular member within said.
3. In a device of the class described, a-
stcck bored to form a hollow tube, an an- Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each; by addressing the Commissioner of, Patents.
forward portion of said tube, radially adjustable cutters in said stock, a longitudinally adjustablerotary cam' piece within said tube having its reduced forwardj ex tremity fitting within said annular fiange as a bearing'and its cam. faces adapted by rotation of the cam piece to adjust said: cutters, means for clamping said cutters to said cam facesv by an endwise movement of the cam piece, and means for drawing the cam piece longitudinally in the stock.
4.111 a device of the class described, a stock bored to form ai hollow tube, an; annular flange integral with: said stock in the forward portion of said tube, radially adjustable cutters in; said stock, a longitudinally adjustable rotary cam piece within said tube-having'its reduced forward ex-,
tremity fitting within said annular flange as a bearingand its cam faces adapted by rotaticn of the cam piece to adjust such cut-w ters means for clam in said cutters to said 7 P Y cam faces by an endwise movement of the In testimony whereof I aflixmy signature in the presenceof two witnesses.
