Description

LUCIUS N. WADE,,'OF MAYVIEW, WASHINGTON.
CULTIVATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.-
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
Application filed November 10, 1915. Serial N 0. 60,748.
To all whom it m a concern Be it known that I, LUoIUs N. WADE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mayview, in the county of Garfield and State of WVashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cultivators, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in cultivators and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character wherein is employed a slicker blade or hoe; and it is an object of the invention to provide a device of this general character having novel and improved construction whereby the depth of cut of the slicker blade or hoe may be regulated with convenience and facility.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved cultivator whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use,'all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claim.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in top plan illustrating a cultivator constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention; Fig. 2 is a view in side elevation of the device as herein embodied; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken substantially on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a transverse beam of predetermined dimensions and having imposed thereupon a second beam 2 and the forward longitudinal margins of said beams 1 and 2 are hingedly connected one to the other, as indicated at 3, so that said beams may have a relative swinging movement.
Secured to the under surface of the beam 2 and arranged in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally of said beam 2 are the upper extremities of the rearwardly disposed gage runners 4 arranged on a predetermined curvature and which are adapted to rest upon and ride over the surface of the ground.
The under surface of the beam 1 has secured thereto and in predetermined spaced relation longitudinally thereof the rearwardly directed goose neck beams 5, the free extremities of which having secured thereto the slicker blade or hoe 6 adapted to penetrate the soil, for a purpose which is believed to be clearly apparent to those skilled in the art to which my present invention appertains.
The intermediate goose neck beams 5 adjacent the outer end of the straight portion 7 thereof are tied or connected by the supplemental beam 8 arranged in parallelism with the beam 1 and operatively supported by said supplemental beam 8 is a rack 9 with which coacts the spring pressed latch 10 carried by the lever 11 secured to the beam 2. It will be readily perceived that upon rocking the beam 2 under the influence of the lever 11 in an upward or downward direction, the degree of penetration of the slicker blade or hoe 6 may be readily and conveniently regulated.
The beam 1 and supplemental beam 8 have suitably secured thereto the platform 12 arranged at right angles thereto and of a length to terminate at a predetermined point rearwardly of the rear end portions of the goose neck beams 5 and upon which the operator may take his position.
The forward edge of the beam 1 has loosely engaged therewith the rings or eye members 14 with which are loosely engaged the hitch bars 15, for a purpose which is believed to be obvious.
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that a cultivator constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as ners carried by the bar, and means for im- 10 limiting myself to the precise arrangement parting pivotal movement to the bar.
and formation of the several parts herein In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my shown in carrying out my invention in pracsignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
f- LUGIUS N. WADE.
A cultivator comprising a plurality of Witnesses: plow beams, a transversely disposed bar piv' G. WV. JEWETT, otally supported by said beams, gage run- W. S. MEYERS.
