Description

' NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY c. DIE'rItrciI, or EVANSVILLE, INDIANA, ASSIGNOR T0 CRESCENT s'rovE'.
WORKS, o EvANsvILLE, INDIANA,'A CORPORATION OF INDIANA.
RAFFLE-PLATE.
Specification of Letters Patexit. 22 1916 Application filed February 17, 1915. Serial No. 8,755.
T 0 all whom it may concern:.
Be it known that I, HENRY C. DIETRICH, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Evansville, in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Battle- Plates for Gas-Ovens, of which the following is a full and accurate description, reference being had to theaccompanying drawings for a more comprehensive understanding of my invention.
My invention relates more particularly to that class of ovens which may be heated by either gas, coal, or other means.
I provide a unique support for my baffle plate comprising an automatic shutter for the closing of the. air intake opening when the oven is to be heated by coal or means other than gas. This shutter automatically closes the air intake opening upon the withdrawal from the oven of the bafile plate.
The invention comprises the various details of construction, combination, and arrangement of the parts hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and claimed in the appended claims.
Figure 1 of the drawing is a front elevation of a portion of the oven showing at one side my improved baflle plate, with a portion broken away, in position and supported by the combination supportand shutter, when the oven is to be heated by gas and showing at the other side the air intake opening closed by the automatic shutter through the withdrawal of the bafile plate from the oven. Fig. 2 is an end view of a portion of an oven taken on line of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow, showing the shutter in closed position. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of my device. Fig. t is a vertical, transverse section of Fig. 3 taken on line 4.l.
For a better and more comprehensive understanding of my device, reference may be had to the accompanying details of the drawings in which reference numeral 1 represents a sheet of steel forming the top of the bafiie plate and air chamber 2.
3 is a sheet steel plate forming the bottom of air chamber 4.
5 is a'sheet of asbestos interposed between plates 1 and 3 and forming the top of air chamber 4.
I provide an opening shown at 66 for the introductionof the heat into the oven.
7-7 form the bottom ofmy baflle plate and are bent under portions of 1, the heat passing up between their adjacent edges 8-8 from the burner 9 through spaces 10.
11 are supports for my bafiie plate resting on the bottom of the oven 12. These supports 11 may be dispensed with if desired, the bafile plate being firmly held in proper position by reasonof its interlocking engagement with my combined support and shutter 13 by its shouldered edge engaging the shouldered edge of said shutter which shutter also automatically closes the air intake opemng 14 upon the withdrawal .of the bafile plate from the oven. The combined baflle plate support and automatic shutter for closing the air intake is pivotally mounted on rod 15 which runs the full depth of the oven and may be mounted on or in, the side walls of the oven. The comb1ned support and shutter 13 has two shoulders l6 and 17 which form interlocking engagement with the shoulder 18 and the end 19 of the plate 1, and hold the bafiie plate in locked position when it is pushed into the oven.
20 is a lug to limit the movement of the combined support and shutter 13 whensaid support is thrown into position for supporting the baffle plate.
It will be readily seen that when the baffle plate is withdrawn from they oven that the combined support and shutter 13 will swing into the position shown at the left hand of Fig. 1 with its edge 21 engaging portion 22 of the oven and its lower edge 23 engaging portion 2a of the oven, which automatically closes the air intake opening 14 and upon the assumption of such position the oven may be heated by coal or other means.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is:
1. In a device of the character described, the combination with an oven of a gravity actuated shutter, a plurality of shoulders carried by said shutter, said shutter being pivoted at its lower edge and approximately the center thereof, a battle plate movable into and out of said oven, said baflle plate having a plurality of shoulders carried by 'its outer edges and engageable with .the
baflle plate, supports carried by said baffle 1 plate,'a-gravity actuated shutter, said shutter being pivoted at its lower edge and approximately the center thereof, a plurality of shoulders carried by said shutter, a plurality of shoulders carried by said baiile plate and engageable with the shoulders of said shutter and holding said shutter at one of its limits of movement When sald baffle plate is inserted in said oven.
3. The combination With an. oven of a' baffle plate, a plurality of shoulders carried by said baflie plate, a pivotal support, said support being pivoted at its lower edge and HENRY C. DIETRICH.
