AXLE-ARM ADJUSTER.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, MARCUS W. WVIL- LIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axle-Arm Adjusters; and I do hereby declare the following to beafull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art'to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to special tools, more.
especially to bending tools, and has for an object the production of novel, inexpensive and efficient means for bending, straightening or setting'axle-arms for vehicles.
As a further object the present invention contemplates the production of improved means for alining axlearms for vehicles without either the application of heat, the neces sity of removing the axle from the running gear, or placing the vehicle in a shop with a consequent loss of time. The invention may therefore be herein termed a cold axle setter or axle-arm adjuster.
The present improvements will be hereinafterparticularly described and pointed out in the claims following.
In the accompanying drawings which form part of this application for Letters- Patent, and whereon corresponding numerals indicate like parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention applied to a vehicle axle and axle-arm in process of straightening; Fig. 2 is an end view of parts illustrated by Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a view in perspective of the body member of my invention detached, and Fig. 4: is also a detached perspective view showing a tension yoke used to transmit to axle-arms a bending strain as may be required.
Reference being had to the drawings and numerals thereon, 1 indicates the body member of my improved axle-arm adjuster, preferably formed of wrought iron or steel, and of liberal dimensions as shown for purposes of strength. Integral with or permanently secured to the innermost end of body member l is an annulus 2 arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of the adjuster, and for purposes which will later appear.

For purposes of this description, let
A indicate an ordinary vehicle axle, B the usual bed-iron secured to said axle saddle clip a, and C an axle-arm projecting from B slightly out of alinement. If now by accident or otherwise anaxle-arm C. is bent out of true alinement more or less, for
example as shown slightly bent downward by Fig; 1, my improved axle-arm adjuster may be thereupon applied, as shown by Fig. 1. with its annulus 2 surrounding axle A, and its set screw 11 bearing upon the upper surface of said arm at its inner end. Power applied to operating screw 9 by means of an ordinary wrench (not shown) now produces an upward pull upon yoke 3 resting beneath the outer end of the axlearm C until the latter has been straightened. In like manner the adjuster may readily be rotated to a position immediately below axlearm C for the purpose of bending same downward if occasion requires, or to any intermediate position for operating similarly in any direction, and it will be noted that the extent to which an axle-arm may thus be bent depends mainly upon the length of yoke 3.
Having thus described my invention in one form of embodiment, the most practical form at present known to me, it should be understood that I do not confine myself to this, but claim all such modifications thereof as may be capable of accomplishing substantially the same results by substantially the same means.
Having thus described my invention what I now claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an axle arm adjuster, the combination of a body member rotatable upon a vehicle-axle, an engaging loop provided on one end of said body portion, a set screw arranged in close proximity to the said loop and adapted to pass through the said body portion and engage axle arm, ayoke arranged to pass over the other end of the body portion and engage the end of the said axle arm upon a side opposite to'that bar and engage the outer end of thesaidi axle arm upon a side opposite to that of the said screw, and means includinga set screw arranged to pass through one end of the said yoke and bear upon. the said bar.
