To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, JOHN SELLERS BAN- onor'r and MAURITZ C. INDAHL, citizens of the United States. residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Galley Mechanism for Type-Composing Machines; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and to the figures and letters of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to galley mechanism of the kind used in connection with signal controlled automatic type casting and composing machines for assembling the type, as delivered, into lines and the lines into columns in a galley. Each line after it is set up in the assembling channel is moved by a carrier engaging the last inserted type and operating against the resistance of a movable type support at the opposite end. of the line, to bring one end of the latter into register with one wall of the galley entrance. In commercial machines of this class the performing members of the galley mechanism remain at rest while the type for a line are being assembled, and they are connected up with their driver by mechanism respond- 111;}: to signals contained in the controlling record strip and occurring between successi e series of signals representing the types of adjacent lines. indicating signal, recourse must be had to the record strip, and this is accomplished by placing the .tarting devices of the galley mechanism under the direct control of the line as assembled, so that when, by the addition of successive type thereto, the line has reached the desired dimensions it will operate to automatically start the galley mechanism into action and thus effect a transfer of the operating line into the galley.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating a preferred form of embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a galley mechanism equipped with the line actuated tripping devices. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view, on an enlarged scale, of the tripping devices. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a part of the bracket to which the tripping devices are applied. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the galley trip lever showing the added connections for coupling up the line trips. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the type support and trip extension.

gallev blade and line transferrer, are connected to the driving shaft 10 through a one revolution clutch 11 under the control of a trip lever 12, the latter in turn controlled by a signal in the record strip, to start the galley in operation and discharge the assembled line into the galley.
The sequence of operation performed by the galley mechanism as'thus composed is as follows: After the signals representing individual types for a line have operated, a separate signal in the record strip or the justification signal preceding the signals for the next line, operates through appropriate mechanism (not shown) to actuate trip lever 12' in at manner to permit the closing of clutch 11 during one revolution only of driving shaft 10'. Line carrier 9 is thereupon moved by its actuating lever 13 to a position rear of and is then moved outward along the line channel until brought opposite the inner edge of the galley entrance, where its; further outward motion is' arrested. tion, and means for automatically retracting the motor device and reengaging its controlling latch. v p 7 In the present embodiment there is erected upon the frame a bracket 15, to the upper section of which is pivotally attached a lever or latch 16, the upper arm whereof extends above and parallel with the line engaging section of said transferrer. Supported at one end in bracket 15 and at the other in a coupling 17 detachably secured to lever 12, is a rod 18 against which engages the lower arm of lever 16. The arrangement is such that when lever 16 is tilted to withdraw its lever arm from engagement with collar 21 the motor devices represented by rod 18 and spring 2Uwill immediately shift lever 12 to release and close clutch 11 thereby starting the galley mechanism in action. The movement of lever 16 for effecting the closing of the clutch is controlled from the line through the agency of a slide 22 detachably coupled with the type support 8 andmovable'there with in a guide way on the line transferrer. The points of connection between coupling 17 and plate and rod 18 are in line, so that the pressure of pin 25 on plate 27 tends to draw rod 18 inward against ti o pressure of its actuating spring for effecting the reengagement of lever 16, during which movement coupling 17 moves independently of lever 12, which latter is thus left to the control of its retracting spring 31 and subject to the action of the usual signal controlled automatic actuating devices contacting witn the power end of lever 12, as usual.
lVhile the detachable connection between the slide and type support 8 may be of any usual character, it is preferably formed by interlocking books and 4C1 on theends of the respective members, as shown in Fig. 6.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is,
1. A galley mechanism for type composing machines equipped with signal controlled starting means and in combination therewith, an auxiliary line-controlled actuating means coupled with said signal controlled starting means.
2. In a galley mechanism, and in combination with the starting member thereof, line controlled actuating'devices for said member including a member movable with the line, actuating devices for said starting member, and a restraining latch therefor, said restraining latch being controlled by he movements of the line.
3. A galley mechanism provided with a. line assembling channel, a line carrier and a tvpe support movable longitudinally of said channel, and actuating devices including a starting member, and in combination therewith, actuating means coupled with said starting member, releasing or control devices for said actuating means, and means coupled with the type support and acting upon said releasing devices at a predetermined point in the path of movement of the type support to effect the starting in action of: the galley mechanism.
A galley mechanism provided with a line assembling channel. a type support 1nov able in said channel, a line carrier movable longitudinally of the channel, and actuating devices for said carrier including driving and driven members and a one revolution clutch with a clutch closing member, and in combination therewith, a line controlled actuating mechanism coupled with sald clutch closing member.
5. A alley mechanism embodying line assembling channel, type support, a reciprocatory line carrier and actuating mechanism therefor including a one revolution clutch with a starter therefor, and in combination therewith, a line controlled actuating mechanism for said starter, the same including a member coupled to move in unison with the type support, an actuating mechanism coupled with the starter for the clutch, a restraining latch for said starter actuating mechanism, and actuating devices intermediate the member coupled with the type support and the latch for retracting the latter.
(9. A galley mechanism equipped with a line assembling channel, a line carrier movable longitudinally of said channel, a movable type support opposing the line carrier and actuating devices for the line carrier including a reciprocatory member and driving mechanism containing a clutch and a controlling member therefor, and in combination therewith, a line controlled actuating mechanism for said clutch. controlling member including a motor, a restraining latch and means coupled with the type support for acuating said latch.
7. A galley mechanism equipped with a line assembling channel, a line carrier and an opposed type support movable in said channel, and actuating mechanism for the line carrier including a driving clutch and controlling means therefor, and in combination therewith a line controlled actuating mechanism for said clutch controlling means the same including motor devices, a restraining latch, means coupled with the type support for actuating said latch, and means coupled with the line carrier actuating mechanism for automatically retracting the motor devices.
8. An auxiliary line-actuated trip mechanism for the driving clutch of a galley mechanism such as described, the same including a slide adapted for applicaton to the line transterrer in the guidetor the type support and for detachable connection with the latter, a rod adapted to be coupled with the clutch closing member and provided with a coupled motor spring {hid it detent or 001151, {did a latch r'noimted in position to engage said detent 01' collar, said latch heirig previd'ed with an adjustable ebutment for ehgagiiig the aforesaid slide.
