Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1916.
A licatio and April 6, 1911. Serial No. 619,253.
terial the use of a paper with an interposed,
hod of sueh material as dried eel grass. the paper and eel grass hein; stitehed to hold them together. For eonrenienee in handling.- this material is formed in wehs ol' rolls with the stitehing running longitudinally thereof. To meet ordinary ((Illl mereial requirements two widths are needed.
- hut. l have found by a certain arrangement of the strip that l am enabled to produee a smgle standard size strip \\'lll('ll may he varied into the smaller size strip in the main ner and for the purposes hereinafter explained. l have. furthermore. diseovered that h the proportiounient of the roteriug paper to the lillin; material used l am alile te seeure a suh'stantially noneomhnstilile insulati on. l. furthermore. find that 1 ani ahle to seeure a proper ro iortioiunent through the use of a eertain ltlud of paper pulp. as will he more full set forth.
.\s illustrative of iu invention l have shown in the drawings a form of my insulatin; material.
'lhroughout speeiliration and drawings like referenee numerals are eiuplo \-'ed to in dieate ('(H'lespulullllg parts. and in the drawiugs:ligure l is a plan \ie'w of a frag" ment of my quilt. and Fig. L' a transverse sertion of the same. 7
'lhe insulating strip is formed of two strips of paper l and 2 with an interposed lillin; ll of eel grass or other suitahle material. 'lhese elements are stitrlied together l| seams l. 5 and (l. The seams l are run loiujitiuliuall elose to the edges of the strip. and the seams 5 between tlieeil e of the strip and the small or niedialline thereof. The seams (l are stite'hed a short distant-e on eat-h side from the medial line. whieh is indieated at 7.
'hen it is desiredto use tlie'inaterial between joists the stripinziy he longitudinally split along the lint-7. thus forming two strips eaeh stitehed along its outside edge. The material is usually made in a 36" width so that when split two strips 18" wjde will he ser-ured. thus allowing for the H" spaee between joists with a 2" margin for fastening.
The sheets 1 and 2 are made from sulfateof soda paper pulp. IlHH'O found that lu' using paper made from this pulp I am able to keep the weight of the paper down to about.
12"? of the weight of the total insulating: material. This amount of paper. even though it he in itself eoinhustihle. will not when eomhined with the eel grass afl'ord sullirient ignition to burn tl 1 insulation.
This is a great advantage as under these ('ir ruinstanees the insulat'ioivnot only affords protei'tiou from heat'aud eold hut is a praetieal fireprooling for or lin'ar purposes.
Various modilieations may. of ron'rse. he made in the several elements of the ai'tit'le. all without departing from the spirit of my invention if within the limits of the appended elaiin.
'hat l. therefore. elaiin and desire to rure l) Letters Patent is:
.\s an artiele of manufacture. a suhstantiallr lire proof insulating strip comprising a pair of eovel'ing sheets iuannfaetnred from sulfate of soda paper stoelt and a filletof suhstantiallr iiou-eomlnlstihle insulating material disposed therehetweeu. said covering sheets eomprising suhstantiall twelve per rent. of the t tal weight of the strip and eomhining with the suhstantially noueomhnstihle filler to prevent ignition of the strip in testimony whereof. I atlix my sig'ua ture in presenee of two witnesses.
