UNITED s rATEs PATENT OFFICE. ff'
Jar/ ns F. BEnnLnmor s'r. Louis,- MIssoURL To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thHtL'J AMES FdBEE HLER, a
citizen of the United States, residing at St.
1 claimed and shown Louis, Missouri, haveinvented a certainnew and useful Improvement in Box-Fasteners, Of'WlllCli the following 1s anfull, clear, and
exact description, such as willenable others skilled in the art to which it appertalns to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification.
My invention relates'to new and useful improvements in box fasteners, the principal objects of my invention being to provide a comparatively simple and inexpen-' sive fastener or latching' device for the lids of boxes, crates, and the like, and to providea-device which can be cheaply manufactured and easily applied for use, and -which device comprises a minimum number of parts.
Further objects of my-invention are to generally improve upon and simplify the existing types of box fasteners, and to provide a device wherein the latching plate is provided witha latch receiving member, a sealing wire loop, a lifting lip.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangementof parts, hereinafter more fully described, 1n the accompanying drawings, in wh1ch- Figure l is a top plan view of a portion of a boX and showing my improved fassection taken approximately on the line 2 2 the latching member combined of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevational view of the resilient latching memberf. Fig.4 is asectional view similar to'Fig. 2, and showing with a latching plate, which latter applied to the inside of the box lid. 1
Referring by numerals to the accompanyp 1s a transverselydispose'd rib 24 in-the'itop ing drawings, 10 designates the front wall of a box, and 11 the lid or cover therefor, and formed in said cover near the front edge is a circular opening 12. -Positioned immediately'over this aperture -12 and secured to the box lid in any suitable manner is the latching plate of my improved device, the same being preferably constructed of a rectangular section 13 of sheet metal in the center of which is formed an aperture 14. This aperture is formed by pressing or Box FasTENER- such as beer shipping cases, egg

section of the sheetmetalof 3 member-is adapted to o 7 engage when the lid-'isswungdownward into closed position.
. Formed in the and the material slit and theopening 14 is bent downwardly to form a horizontally disposed seat 17 which is engaged by the upper endof the rectly positioning the plate 131111 the lid when said plate is applied thereto.
The material in the plate 13 between the slit 16 and the corresponding front edge of said plate is bentupward to forma loop 18 beneathwhich a sealing wire may be positioned; rear' of opening 14 is bent form a depending lip 19, which latter bears directly against the rear edge of the opening 12 in the box lid and theinclined or roundedface of this downwardly bent lip serves as a guide todefiect the sealing wire upward to the; fastener.
rear edge is "bent upward to plate 13' immediately I front of the opening l is 'a 'curvedsli't .16v of the plate between this lid at the front of the opena ing 12, and. thus serves as a guide'for cor? The material immediately to the i;
downward to r 2 form a. lip 20 which performsthe functions of a lifting lipinasmuch as it may be engaged by the fingers when it is desired to lift thelid to whichthe plate is attached. 1
Fixed to the inner face of the front'wall 10 0f, the box is a platei2l, the upper edge e of whichis bent outward to form .ahori-- zontally disposed plate 22 in the center of which is formed an opening 23.
Formed in the lower portion of plate 21 of which is formed an opening 25 and secured to the inside of said rib 24: in any suitable manner is the lower end of a vertically disposed resilient latching member 26, the same passing through openings 25 and 23. The opening 25 has greater width I than the thickness of member 26, and thus any small particles of foreign matter which may tend to-accumulate between the plate 21 and the lower portion of member 26 will pass downward through said opening into the space within rib 2e, and consequently when the device is closed engages beneath the free-operation of the resilient member is not affected. 7
. Formed in the central portion of member 26 is, a short vertically.odisposed'rib 27 i which serves to 'stifien the central portion of said member and prevent the upper portion thereof from being accidentally bent outward and downward to an abnormal degree, thereby rendering said member inoperative. The upper portion, of member 26 is bent forwardlyto form a hook 28 which is adapted to engage directly over seat 17 when the latch is closed and the extreme upper end of said resilient member above the horizontal portion 28 is curved upwardly and rearwardly as designated by 29 to form a striking plate which engages theunderside of striking closed;
Formed through the lower portion of the curved plate 29 is'an aperture 30 which is adapted to receive a sealing wire. When the sealing wire is applied, one end thereof is passed beneath loop 18 and thence through aperture 30 and. as the end of said wire is moved forward it will strike against lip 29 and be deflected upwardly thereby, andthe ends of the'wire are now brought together andunited by a suitable seal;
When the lid, of a box'which' is equipped with my, improved fastening device is closed, the curved striking plate 29 strikes against the underside of striking plate 15 and the upper end of the resilient member 26 moves rearward untilthe hook on the upper end of said member passes the upper edge of the striking plate 15 after which saidhook will spring forward into locking position immediately abovemember 17 and when so positioned the lid is maintained in closed position. When it is desired to release the fastener to permit the lid to be raised, the upper end of the resilient memher is foroed'rearwardly a short distance and the operator by now "engaging lip 20 may raise said lid.
In; Fig. l I have shown an inside keeper or latching member associated with the member 26, said keeper comprising a plate 31 which is secured to the underside of the lid and said plate being provided with a de- Copies 'of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, oyfladdressinglthelfiicommissioner of Patents? plate 15 when the lid is pending portion 32,. the lower end of which, is bent upward to form a hook .33 which the horizontally disposed hook portion 28.
A box fastener. of my improved 'construction is comparatively simple, can be 1 cheaply manufactured, comprises a minimum number of parts, :and is applicableffor use on all forms of boxes, cases and crates utilized for storage and shipping purposes.
litiwill be readily understood that minor.
changes 'inltlie size,'forin and construction of the various parts, of my improved device can be made and substituted for those here- 1 in shown and: described, without; departing. from the spirit-ofzmyj invention, the scope of whiehis set forth in the appended claims.-
I claim laln a box fastener, a plate, provided with an opening, a portion .of said plate in front of said opening; being bent upward to form a sealing wire-loop, the edge of said plateto therear of said opening being bent vided with. a hook which is adaptedto pass downward to form a sealing wire guide, the i through the opening in the plate and engage ,3
over that portion. of] said plate betweenthe openingandthe' sealing loop.
The combination with a box; and box lid, the latter being provided with an opening, of a plate positioned over saidopening,
which plate is providedwith an aperture, an inclined striking plate depending from said plate in front of said aperture,a sealing wire loop on. said plate in front of the aperture,- a-lifting'lip on the rear edge'of said plate,- and a resilientrmember to the front wall of the box, the upper end of which resilient member is provided with a hook which is adapted to pass through the secured opening intheplate and engage the top of said plate in frontof the openingtherein.
In testimony whereof I hereunto --my signature in the presence of two witnesses, this 8d day of April, 1915; v
