I My invention relates to improvements in cash and credit recorders for use 1n. mercantile establishments where it is desired to extend credit, and also to keep a correct account of cash received by various clerks or those having access to the recorder. The same being true of those having access to the recorder wherein crediti's extended.

The object of'my invention is to construct a device of the character to which my invention pertains, that shall be simple and etficient and at the-same time compact. These objects together with other objects readily apparent to those skilled in the art I attain responding parts in all by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings although my invention may be embodied in other forms as to details, the construction illustrated being chosen by way of example.

Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section showing the credit mechanism. Fig. 2 is a similar view showingthecash side. Fig. 3 is the top plan with the covers removed, showing the paper in properposition for use.

The cabinet is made up of the'sides 1, the ends '2 and 3 and the bottom 4, said parts being so arranged as to constitute a suitable box or cabinet in which are inclosed the various devices going to make up the operas arenecessary. To the sides 1 of the cabinet proper are securely attached the bearing blocks 8, which bearing blocks are provided with the open or semi-circular recesses 9 shown in dotted lines Fig. 1, but better illustrated in Fig. 3. These bearing blocks are for the purpose of supporting the shaft 10 upon which shaft are mounted the paper spools 11 and 12, upon which'spools are wound the paper strips 13 and 14. The paper strip 13 is for the purpose of recording thereon credits extended to a customer. The paper thrown out of proper strip 14 is for the purpose of recording the amount of cash received. These paper strips are extended from the spools 11 and 12 under the tension roller 15, which tension,

roller is mounted upon the wireor bar 16 from whichextend the arms l7, said arms being provided with the integral springs 18, said springs being locatedaround the screws 19 .or their equivalents, which screws are connected to the side members 1 of the cabinet proper.

For the purpose of holding the springs in tension the tangs 20 are provided, which 1 of the cabinet. The paper strips 13 and 14 extend over and rest upon the writing table 6 and from the writing table extend to the takeup spools 21 and 22. The paper strip 13 extends over the top of the take-up spool and the strip 14 extends down andunder the takeup spool 21.. The paper strips 13 and 14 are, unwound from the spools 11 and 12 and taken. up upon the tangs' are securely fixed in any convenient and well known manner to the side member manner to the side members 1' and the partition 5 or their-equivalents. v t

It will be understood that provision should be made for the proper removal of the spools l1 and 12 and the take up spools 21 and 22 from the cabinet proper, and in order to do this the various'bearings for the shafts 10, 23 and 24 are located in open bearings. It will also be understood that provision should be made for preventing the accidental displacement of the various 7 shafts 10, 23 and 24 and in order to provide means for-temporarily holding the various shafts in proper position the latches26 .and

27 are provided, which latch s are pivoted to the side m'embers 1. The latches 26 being pivoted at one of'their ends and the opposite ends provided with notches 28,

which notches engage the 'pins 29, said notches and pins being of such relative size that the latches 26 will befrictionally held in position to hold the shaft 10. The latches 27 are preferably pivoted intermediate their ends by means of the pivot pin 30, the latches being frictionally held so that when they are brought into the position illustrated in Fig. 1 they will hold the shafts 23 and 24.- It will be understood that a latch such as 27 will be provided for each separate shaft 23 and 24. Upon the shafts 23 and 24"are mounted the ratchet'wheels 31 and. 32, which ratchet wheels and take up spools 21 and 22 are 'rotatably connected together, preferably by fixedly mounting said ratchet Wheels and spools upon the jshafts carrying said ratchet wheels and spools; but if in the event the ratchet wheels and spools are looselyv mounted upon 1 the shafts then in that event the ratchet wheels and spools should be connected to.-

gether in any convenient and well known -manner.

To the top or. upper portion of the end member 2 are connected the angled brackets 33 and 34, which angledbrackets are for the purpose of providing hinged connections for the covers 35 and 36 vby means of the flanges 37 and 38, said flanges being provided with projections 39, which pro e'ctions come under the upper, right ang ed portions of the brackets 34 as best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.

For the purpose of normally holding the cover 35 in an elevatedposition, the bars 40 are provided, which bars are slidably mounted in the brackets 41 and their top. or upper ends arranged to'press or bear against the underside of the cover 35. For the purpose of normally .holding the bars 40 in their elevated position the springs 42 are provided, which springs are located between "the bottom or'lower ends or the bars 40 and the top of the horizontal partition 43, which partition separates the chamber containing the paper strip actuating mechanism and the Q5 chamber in which the drawer-4 is located.

When the cover 35 is pressed downward so as to bring said cover substantially parallel with the top of the casing proper, the bar 40 will be moved down with said ,cover thereby compressing the spring 42.

At. the same time this downward movement of the cover 35 moves the bar 45 downward, to which bar is attached a spring detent 48, which spring detent is constructed in the same manner as the spring detent 49 best shown in Fig. 2.- These spring detents are the same in both instances and their operation is substantially the same except thatthere is 'nomovement of the cover 36 necessary to actuate the detent 49, saiddetent being actuated by the bar 50. The cover35 is provided with the opening 51, which opening is located directly above the writing table 6. Inuse the cover 35 is pressed down, which downward movement moves the take' 'up spool .21 ashort distance, thereby moving the paper strip 13 by reason" of the slight rotary movement imparted to the spool 21.

When the cover is in its lowered position the record desired can be made upon the strip of paper 13 after which the cover 35 '.3

is permitted to assume its normal position and when again pressed down the strip of paper 1s again moved which presents a clean and unwritten portion of the strip of paper 13 for a new record. By pressing the cover 35 down from time to time as charges are to be made or other record placed upon the strip, said strip is intermittently unwound" from one spool and taken up upon the other. It will be understood that when the cover 35 is pressed down and when in a lowered position it constitutes a convenient desk upon which the hand can be placedduring the time a record is being made.

For the purpose of preventing any backward movement of the take up spools during the time the detents are moving upward and riding uponthe teeth of the ratchet wheels thedogs 52 and 53' are provided which are pivoted to the sides 1 of the cabinet or otherwise connected so as to hold the same in proper position with reference to the ratchet wheels 31 and 32. To thepartition 5or its equivalent is pivotally attached the bar 54, one end of said bar being pivotally attached to the bar 50 and when said bar, 50 -.is moved down the pivoted bar 54:

' will be rocked upon its pivotal point, which rocking movement elevates the rear end of the bar 54; and rocks the drawer catch 55 upon its pivot 56, thereby releasing the drawer catch fromthe drawer l, at which time the drawer is forced outward by means of the spring 57, said spring being located between the rear end of the drawer and the end member of the casing proper. It will be understood that when the bar 50 is moved downward, the take up spool 22 will be' rotated by means of the ratchet wheel and its detent, thereby intermittently winding and unwinding the paper strip 14, by

which arrangement records can be. made upon said strip from time to time and the strip afterthe record has been made taken up or wound upon the takeup spool 22.

For the purpose of automatically elevating the bar 50 the spring 58 is provided, one

end of said spring being connected to the partition 5 or its equivalent and the opposite end to the bar'54. For the purpose of permitting the drawer 4 to. be pushed'inward or in vits closed position the drawer catch 55 is provided with the inclined end 59 and as the rear end of the drawer passes under the inclined end it rocks the catch 55 sufficiently to allow the rear end of the drawer to pass under and when said'drawer has fully passed the inclined end 59 the spring 58 will act to lower the end of the bar 54 to which the catch 55 is pivoted, thereby lowering the catch 55 so as to bring the catch in position to engage the inner face of the rear end 60 of the drawer 4.

For the purpose of holding the sliding bar 50 in proper relative position the brackets 4A are provided which brackets are secured ,to the partition5 or its equivalent. For the purpose of guiding the movement of the 'hinged cover 35 indts vertical movements the flange 61 is provided, the forward end of which flange is formed of such a width that its bottom or lower edge will not pass entirely abovethe extreme top of the sides or partition of the cabinet or casing 1. This flange 61 as shown in Fig. 1 is providedcwith notches 6:2, which are for the purpose of providing clearance. V

what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

In a cash and credit register, the combination of a casing, a partition dividing the upper portion of said casing into two com-N partments, a shaft journaled in the casing,

a paper carrying roll located in each of said compartments and mounted-upon said shaft, a take up spool located in each compartment and spaced from said paper carrying spools, said take-up spools rotatable independent of each other, a writing table located between said spools, a hinged cover provided with an opening above said writing table, a ratchet necting said door catch with said manually operated sliding bar.
