HUMP-BURNER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Applicationfiled June 16, 1915. Serial No.34,33-9.
V to burn the stumps standing and without having to wait for them to dry out.
I attain these objects by the apparatus illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure l is a part vertical section and part side view of the apparatus, and Fig. 2 is a side view of the same.
The cylindrical shaped main-piece 1 is to envelop a stump. The plate-valve 2 covers the interior cross section of the cylinder of the main-piece 1, and is movable in the latter by means of the threaded bar 6 operated through the threaded opening in shoulder 8 and hooked to staple 9 secured to said valve. The dimensions of the fire chamber vary according to the location of said valve 2 in the cylinder of said main-piece. The draft is through joints 4 into pipe 5, and can be regulated by dampers 3. Fuel is placed in the fire chamber through door 10 which is provided with air-vent 11. Bar 6 isoperated by means of hand-wheel 7 fastened to it.
Fig. 2 indicates how a stump is enveloped.
By confining both heat and flame, a stump, even though green, is quickly dried, then charred and reduced to ashes. Asthe bulk of the stump is reduced, the valve 2 is lowered until it has shut off all except the lower Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the .Commissioner of Patents,

pipe joint from entrance to the fire chamber,
and With heat and flame thus confined, the stump can be consumed far enough below the general surface of the ground to not interfere with plowing. The drawing shows the upper end of the main-piecejas closed. As this part ofthe main piece is only intended as a support for operating the valve 2, a support not closing the end can be used. 7
What I claim is 1. A stump burner, comprising, a cylindrical-shaped body adapted to be placed over and around a tree-stump; a smoke pipe connected to said body by means of three pipe joints fitted into openings in said body; a damper for each of said pipe joints; a valve plate filling the cross section of said body, and slidable in the same; a screw bolt connected to said valve-plate and operable through a threaded opening in the top surface of said body and through the threaded" opening of a collar secured thereto; a door, provided with an air-vent, through which door fuel is supplied, and when closed, its
the vertical dimension of the combustion chamber and for controlling the outlet so as to concentrate the incoming air upon the remainder of the unburned stump. 7
