Specificatioaof Letters Patent.
.Application filedluiie 7', 1915. Seria1No. 32,722.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ROY D. CURTIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego andState- Another object of importance'resides in the construction of the parts which cooperate to force the bristle heads into effective engagement with the walls of a pocket formed in the stock of the brush into which they are adapted to be fitted, while. associating the parts, with a View of facilitat ing this operation, together with a novel manner of locking the bristle heads as a unit in the pocket.
Other objects will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood from the following description, the invention residing in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in detail. v
In the drawing forming part of this application like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View through the brush constructed in accordance with myinvention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view with the bristles removed. Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the stock of the brush. Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the bristle heads assembled. Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view thereof. Fig. 6 is a view showing the manner of spreading the bristle heads for cleaning the same. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the bristle head sections.
Referring more particularly to the drawing A designates generally a brush constructed in accordance with my invention, it
being understood that any suitablematerial may be employed in the production of the brush, and that the latter may vary in form and dimensions.
The handle of the brush is indicated at 5 and the head or stock shown at 6,the latter having'its'upper' surface recessed to provide a M STATESPATENTEOFFICE;
Manama. 15,1916.
pocket 7 in which the bristle heads "are adapted to be removably fitted. The front end wall ofthe'po'cket is forwardly beveled j as at 8, while the rear end wall is oppositely beveled as at 9 for a portion'ofits height,
and then out rearwardly 'toprovide a shoulder10.'v
The bristle head as a unit comprisesa plurality of. elongated flat strips 11 pivotally mounted upon-the rod "12, the bristles. 13 being fastened ther'eto'in anywell known manner employed by brush manufacturers.
The forwardend of each strip is provided j with 'a'projection 16 having its under sur-" face beveled as at '17 to provide an inclined surface 18 when thestrips are assembled as shownin Fig. 4. The inclined surface 19 is adapted to cooperate with the beveled end wall 9 of the pocket 7 on insertion of the bristle head as a unit therein, so as to force the brlstle head forwardly into effective en gagement with the front end wall 8 of the I projections 16 in alinement with the shoulder 12. Passed transversely through an open.- ing in oneside wall of the pocket 7 is a key 20 of rectangular formation in cross section adapted to be seated upon the shoulder 12 and the projections 16 to retain the bristle head as a unit positioned within the pocket 7, the free end of the key being received within a suitable recess in the opposite side wall of the pocket 7, and having its opposite end projecting a slight distance to permit the same to be grasped when it is desired to remove the bristle heads from the brush for any purpose whatever.
By reason of the construction hereinabove described, it will be manifest that the bristleheadsare not only effectively held in position within the stock of the brush, but that the same may be readily removed, and that both the stock and bristle heads may be independently cleaned when desired with a view of maintaining the brush in a sanitary condition.
It. is believed that from the foregoing description, the nature and advantages of the invention will be thoroughly understood without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted. What is claimed is v 1. A brush including a head recessed to provide a pocket, the end walls of said pocket-being oppositely beveled, a bristle head removably fitted Within said pocket and" constructed to cooperate with one of saidend Walls for moving said bristle head into engagement With the opposite end Wall, and means for locking said parts operatively associated.
2. A brush including a head recessed to provide a pocket, the end Walls of said pocket being oppositely beveled, a" bristle head removably fitted in .saidpocket and comprising a plurality of separate pivotally mounted sections, each ofsaid sections being constructed to cooperate With one of said end Walls for moving said bristle head as a unit into engagement With the opposite end Wall, and means for locking the parts operatlvely associated.
3. A brush including a head recessed to provide a pocket having one end Wall provided wlth a shoulder, a bristle head removably fitted Within the pocket and compris ing a plurality of separate pivotally mounted sections, each of said sections being formed with a projection at one end adaptedto lie flush With said shoulder, and a transverse key passed through said pocket above said projections and shoulder for and pivotally mounted sections, each of said secj holding the-bristle head positioned within the pocket.
4:. A brush including a head recessed to providepocket, the end Walls of said pocket being oppositely beveled, a shoulder formed by one of said end Walls, a bristle head removably fitted Within said pocket comprising a plurality of separate V v ROY D. CURTIS. Witnesses: I
