GEORGE F. DICKSON, F CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR '10 J. G'. CHERRY COMPANY,- OF
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA, A CORPORATION 0F IOWA. i
AIR-COOLING APPARATUS.
To all 'whom'z't may concern: p v
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. Droxson,
I a citizen of the United States of America,
and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air- Cooling Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of apparatus, in which a ow of air is indirectly cooled by a frigorific mixture of ice and salt or the like. And the presentimprovement has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation and association of parts, whereby the body of air passing through the apparatus is reduced 1n temperature in an even, rapid and economical manner, ap ear.A
n the accompanying drawings: Figure 1,
is a side elevation illustrating the preferred form of the present invention. Fig. 2, is a4 top view with the cover removed. Fig. 3, is an end elevation. Fig. 4, is an enlarged longitudinal section. Fig. 5, is an enlarged transverse section.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the several views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates the main casing or housing of the apparatus, preferably of Athe rectangular box shape shown, and having its side walls, bottomand cover 2, formed with heat insulating linings in any ordinary and xusual manner.
3 and 4 designate ,transverse vertical partitions or heads disposed in adjacent spaced relation to the respective end walls of the main casing 1, to divide the same into a central main chamber 5 and a pair of end 'spaces and secured at their respective ends to the transverse vertical partitions or heads 3 and 4 aforesaid, to provide communication vfrom Specification of Letters Patent.
all as lwill hereinafter more fully dl passing therethrough.
Patented Feb. 8, 1916.
Application filed February 26, 1915. Serial No. 10,713.
the inlet chamber 7 to the return chamber 9, and from said return chamber 9 to the outlet chamber 8 of the apparatus 13 designates an overiow passage or pipe arranged vertically within the main chamber 5', and passing between the series of horizontal pipes 12 contained in said chamber. The pipe 13 is provided with lateraly drain orifices 14 disposed on a plane approximately horizontal with the transverse horizontal partition 6, above'described, and as so formed said overflow pipe 13 is adapted to prevent a brine level in the main chamber 5 from rising above `the desired level.
15 designates a trap connected to the overflow pipe 13 and vto a branch pipe 16 having in turn connection 'with the drain of thev l building.
17 designates drain pipes having branch connections with the lower portions of the air chambers 7, 8 and 9, and adapted to drain off the water of condensation collected of the apparatus may connect with the roomV `to which the outlet pipe 19 extends, or to lan other suitable source of air supply.
n the practical use of the apparatus, the main chamber 5 is packed with ice in a fragmentary shape and mixed withthe vrequisite quantity of common salt. In continued use a cooled body of liquid brine collects in the lower part of the' mainchamber 5, and on a level with the horizontal transverse partition 6, so that the lower series of horizontal pipes 12 which receives the initial flow ofair, are submerged in said'brine and a rapid andefl'ective initial cooling of the air s'attained and in view of the rapid heat-inter'change which ensues between the cool brine surrounding said pipes and the air Having' -thus fully vention what secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In anl air cooling apparatus, the comdescribed iny Said 'in- I claim as new andv desire to .r aux bination of a main casing provided with vertical transverse end partitions and a transverse horizontal partition associated with one of said vertical partitions, the said partitions providing a lower inlet chamber an upper outlet chamber and a return chamber, a series of pipesextending horizontally between the vertical partitions aforesaid, and
a vertically disposed overflow passage having a drain opening on an approximate level with the horizontal partition aforesaid, the aforesaid transverse horizontal partition being located near the bottom of the apparatus to confine the incoming air to a minor portion of the series of pipes in the initial cooling of the passing air, substantially as setJ forth.
ing located near the bottom of the apparatus to confine the incoming air to a minor portion of the series of pipes in the initial cooling of the passing air, and a series of drain pipes connecting with the bottom portions of the inlet, outlet and return chambers, aforesaid, substantially as set forth.
3. In. an air cooling apparatus, the combination of a main casing provided with vertical transverse vend partitions and a transverse horizontal partition associated with one of said Vertical partitions, the said partitions providing a lower inlet chamber an upper' outlet chamber and a return chamber, a series of pipes extending horizontally between the vertical partitions aforesaid, an air mover connected with the outlet chamber aforesaid, and a vertically disposed overflow passage having a drain opening on an approximate level with the horizontal par,- tition aforesaid, the aforesaid transverse horizontal partition being located near the bottom `of the apparatus to confine the incoming air to a minor portion of the series of pipes in the initial cooling of the passing air, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Chicago, lllinois, this 24th day of February, l915.
