MINE-VENTILATING SYSTEM.
Application filed J une 25, 1913.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, VInEDl-:RICK A. I-Iosiiixs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dubuque, in the county of Dubuque and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mine-Ventilating Systems; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in Ventilating systems for mines and has for its primary object the provision of means whereby foul air and gases may be withy drawn from all parts of the mine and fresh air admitted to the mine.
Another object of the invention is to provide a novel Ventilating system which may be cheaply installed, easily operated, and very efficient.
`With these and other objects in view, as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which the figure illustrates a section through a mine illustrating my improved Ventilating system.
Referring in detail to the' drawing by numerals, 5 designates a mine chamber or drift which is communicant with the shaft 6.
In carrying out my invention I form a plurality of drill holes 7 which extend from the surface of the ground 9 downwardly to the drift or chamber 5. Any suitable number of these drill holes may be provided, depending upon the length of the drift. Each drill hole is lined with a casing. 10 which extends some distance above the surface of thel ground. An air pipe 11 extends down the shaft 6 and connects with the horizontal air pipe 19. which extends through the drift adjacent the bottom and near the side thereof, as shown in the drawings.` A plurality of vertical pipes 13 extend upwardly from Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 775,760.
the air pipe 12 and connect with the hoiiz ontalpipes 14 which extend to the position directly under the drill hole openings ratenteuneuaiaie?- Y y which are connected to the short vertical pipes 15 which extend a slight distance within said openings. A valve'16 is carried by each of the pipes 13 and controls the ilow of air therethrough. A plurality of short branchpipes 17 Vare connected to the pipe 12 and extend toward the center of the drift and are for the purpose of admitting air into the same. A flow lof air through these pipes is controlled by the valve 18.
When the Ventilating system is in operation, compressed air is'forced down the pipe 11 and through the pipe 12 and may be discharged directly into the drill holes by means of the pipes 13, 14 and 15. The discharge of air into the casings 10 causes an up draft which draws the foul air and gases from the mine chamber. rIhe fresh air which discharges into the drift through the pipes 17 takes the placeof the foul air and gases which have been discharged through the drill holes.
To provide a convenient means of settling the dust within the mine so as to prevent an explosion, I provide a main water pipe 19 which extends through the drift and which is provided with the branches or extensions 20 carrying the valves 21. A hose may be attached to the threaded Vextremities of the extensions 20 and used in wetting down the walls and ceiling of the drift.v
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that my improved ventilating system will operate to maintain a safe healthful atmosphere within themine by withdrawing therefrom the foul air and gases and supplying the place with fresh air. It is to be understood that whileV I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to this exact construction, combination, and arrangement ofparts, but may make such changes as will fall within the .by the .appended claim.
