4To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, RALPH A. SCHOEN- BERG, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and useful Means for Operating Switch Mechanisms, of which the followingrv is a speciicatioin-this application being` adivisonof my application filed February 9, 1914, Serial No. 817,472. y
My. invention relates to means for operating switch mechanisms and particularly when such mechanisms are placed in sockets, or other receptacles., especially when adapted for carrying electric light lamps or attachment plugs.
In the case of sockets or other receptacles it is highly desirable to do away with the unsightliness caused lby protruding actuators, such as keys, chains and push-buttons. These actuators are a distinct drawback as a matter of appearance and particularly in the case of very fine fixtures and require not Vonly perforation of the socket or other receptacle but also perforation of the. husk or socket cover when the latter is used as4 well as alinement of the perforations of socket and husk. 1-
One object of my invention is to do away with such protruding actuators and my invention consists partly in providing a support for an electrical appliance such, for. example, as a lamp or attachment plug, movable longitudinally in one direction to make the circuit and also movable in thesame direction vto break the circuit.
A" feature consists 'in a 'support normally occupying its inner position but movable outwardly in' preparation. for active. opera# tion and then' movable inwardly" tofgchange the condition ofy 'the circuit.
Another feature 4'( onsist's 'infav SteP-.by-step' operating mechanism.' u Another feature consists in the mounting.' of'the several parts on relatively movable insulating members. i. Other features will be pointed out below.'
1n the drawings: Figure 1 is a centraluv longitudinall sectional view of a device enr-. bodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a.v section on line 2 2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section on A@ nate Aupstrokes of the' pawl '12 disconnect 'ratchet wheel y10 and contaet 15.` The cenline 3 3 of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail showing part of the switch mechanism of the device of Fig. 1; andr Fig. 6 shows my deseriai No. 29,539.
vice used as a'lamp socket and provided with a cord attachment through which the lamp is manipulated to operate the switch.
Reference characterl-indicates the stationary porcelain block, 2 the movable porcelain block, 3 the screw shell, f1 the lining of insulating material inclosing said parts, 5 the metal shell surrounding the lining 4, 6 the cap of shell 5 and 7 and 8' the lead wires. ','The stationary porcelain block 1 is made with a recess 9 within lwhich is' arrangedl ya lratchetwheel 10 provided upon one face with a series of studs 11 coperatingwith a spring pawl 12 fastened by a screw 13 to tlie movable porcelain block 2. The' porcelain block2 normally occupies its inner position abut' is moved outwardly by handl in preparation for active operation and is then released *and moves inwardly to make .or break 4the circuit and the spring pawl 12 movingwith it acts to rotate ratchet vwheel `10 step by step. The ratchet wheel 10 is made with four laterally projecting lugs .14 adapted by the rotation of said wheel to be brought successively. into engagement with a stationary contact 15 fastenedy by a screw 16 to the stationary porcelainblock l. The contact 15 is-made with a downwardly extending finger 17 which is in permanent engagement with a contact linger 18 riveted or otherwise secured to the screw'shell` 3. l A springfdetent 19 bears against ratchet wheel ,10, and cooperates with ythe studs 11 to'preventxreverse movement of ysaid ratchet' lwheel on the down strokesof pawl'12. Thisy detent 19 is fastened. to;the.stationary, porcelain block- 2 by meansof a screw2 0 which serves also as a binding-post with which ,the 'line wire 7 is connected, Detent. y19: .notf'only prevents re'- verse-inoveinent fof ,ratche-t wheel 1'0 `1butr also,
rseryesagsgnin, electric connection between binding postjscrew. 20* and said ratchet" wheel.,;.r"l`he studs `11 are provided andarranged `soj'thatf each 'upward movement ofA p'awl 12 rotatesl ratchet wheel 1Q-a distance equal to` the angulardistanceibetween' -tvvf ofthe `studs so that every` other upstioke'A of pawl 12jshifts one ofthe lugs '14 into engagement with contact 15 while the'alteiu` ter contact 21 is madewith a threaded'hole to receive the lower threaded extremity of a post 22 provided at its upper end with a head 23 beneath v,which is arranged a springl 24, said spring serving to normally hold the block 2 against the porcelain block 1.
n its under side the porcelain block 1 is made with a recess 25 within vwhich is arranged a contact 26 that is fastened to. the porcelain block'l by means of a screw 27. The screw l27 serves as a binding post to which the other line wire 8 is connected, and the contact 26 is in-permanent engagement with a stationary contact 28 provided onthe center contact 21. The screw shell 3 and porcelain block 2 are movedbodily to open and close the circuit at 19-15 and when thus moved the contacts 28 and 18 slide upon f the contacts 17 and 25 without leaving the latter.' In Fig. 1 I have shown a connecting plug 29 mounted within the screw shell 3 and at 30 and 31 are the line wires leading from this connecting plug to the heater or other instrument. When the circuit through the heater or other instrumentI connected with the wires 30 and 31 is open and it is\ desired to close the same the operatormay accomplish this merely by pulling upon said wires and then releasing them. The pull upon the wires draws the connecting plug 29, screw shell 3, porcelain block 2 and post 22 outwardly-against the pressureof spring 24 which latter returns said parts to' their innermost positions when the pull upon wires 30 and 31 is relaxed. Pawl 12 moves with the porcelain block 2 and through its engagement with the ratchet wheel 10 turns the latter one step carrying one of the lugs 14 into engagement with the contact 15 thereby closing the circuit through the heater or other instrument. Whenit is desired to open the circuit through the heater or other instrument the operator will again pull upon the wires 30 and 31 which results in another in and out movement of the connecting plug 29 and parts connected therewith. When block 2 is thus moved with the connecting plug29 its pawl 12 again-moves ratchet wheel 10 one step carrying the lug 14 resting against contact 15 away from and out of engagement with the latter thus opening the circuit through the heater or other instrument. It will thus be seen that with this orm ofmy invention an important advantage resides in the construction which permits of its being operated from a distant point to open and close the circuit through the mediumy of the wires 3Q and 31.
My improved switch device may b ey used to hold a lamp as shown in Fig. 6 and if it y is to be placed in an elevated position where it cannot be conveniently reached yI may provide an attachment 32 shown in Fig. 6 consisting of an annular flexible strap 33 whose ends are fastened together by means of a screw 34 so that the strap is confined between two shoulders 35 and 36 thatare provided upon the exterior of shell 5.` This strap 33 'ismade with .a depending arm 37 extending downwardly alongside. kof the lamp bulb 38 and at the lower. end of this arm there is provided a bell-shaped cord guiding aperture 39. One end oi' a cord 40 is tied around the shank vof the bulb 38 and said cord extends therefrom downwardly through the guide 39 with'its lower end arranged in aconvenient position.
The stationary porcelain block 1 of Fig. 1 is made at its lower end with two diametrically opposite lugs 4:1occupying two notches 42 provided in the -movable porcelain block 2.- These lugs and sockets connect the two'porcelain blocks so that they can be moved relatively toward and from each other but are held against relative rotative movement.
